The wiring harness is completely different as is the control unit, and the HID ballasts have to be coded to the VIN# of the vehicle they're in, and once coded - the coding can't be changed (anti-theft precaution.)

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hey guys After a fair amount of research, and a deal I couldn't walk away from, I'm proud to announce I've just bought my first Porsche. Its an 08 Cayman S, 6MT, black on black, with 76k km (47k miles). I've only had it for less than a week but I become more and more in love each day. I'm sure most of you can relate to the feeling. The car is stock, and as far as I can tell does not have any optional equipment but the only option I think I would have appreciated would have been the bi-xenons. Lurking the forum has taught me that the Bose was not loved by most, the sport chrono is cool but ultimately a little useless especially for the manual. They're not options I would have been opposed to but I'm not particularly sad that I don't have them. I have 1 gripe, and as much as I've searched, I can't seem to find a clear solution.... Bluetooth... lol I see a lot of you rely on FM transmitters, which I have. For music, it's fine, the flat 6 sounds way better than music anyway. But for phone calls, nobody hears me well at all. I have it plugged in the center console cause I can't stand the look of the lighter tray open with something sticking out of it. Am I right in assuming that when my phone is connected to the transmitter, the microphone that is picking up my voice is actually on the transmitter itself? In which case, that would be why nobody hears me well? Is there a transmitter that someone is currently using (or has used) that can be plugged in the center console and which actually does a half-decent job for 2-way phone calls? Or is there another solution I haven't thought of that I missed while scouring the forum? Lastly, and sorry in advance for the noob question: If I bought factory bi-xenon headlight assemblies, would they be able to simply plug into my car? Can't stand the look of the halogens, I find they age the car a lot. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Congratulations. I have a very similar ride. I use earbuds for pone calls while linking the music through the FM 20200209_094454.jpg MSDCaymanS Feb 11, 2020 2008 Cayman S transmitter. Works excellently!

I too use an FM transmitter to connect my phone and have been able to use it to make/receive phone calls with surprising success - I really did not expect it to work for phone calls, but it does!. I do use the the cigarette lighter plug, not the one buried in the center console. The microphone is integrated into the device, so if you're putting it in the center console with the lid closed I suspect that's the primary reason you are having difficulties. POST 7Original post

Unfortunately - not even close. The factory HID lights are self-leveling, meaning there are front and rear height sensors that tell the headlight control unit how the car is loaded, and it adjusts the headlights accordingly. The headlights have motors in them for self-leveling, and if you find the active headlights - motors that move the beam to aim the light in the direction the car is turning. The wiring harness is completely different as is the control unit, and the HID ballasts have to be coded to the VIN# of the vehicle they're in, and once coded - the coding can't be changed (anti-theft precaution.) So - the answer is nope. Some people do use LED replacement units - I have them - the color is OK if you find a 5,400 or 6,000 unit, but the light output isn't improved over the halogens since the placement of the light source is different between a halogen and an LED so the optics in the light aren't optimum for the LED. The other option is aftermarket HID - but they tend to be too bright and really annoy anyone coming at you. There is a chance with any aftermarket device that it will trigger bulb-out warnings since the electrical draw isn't the same as the halogen light. The last option is blue-colored halogen bulbs - there are "high-output" ones available, but it's questionable how much more (if any) light they put out compared to the stock bulbs, since the blue coating on the bulb (to make the light "white") actually absorbs a lot of the bulb output. They also are generally short lived devices - no free lunch. More output = more current draw = shorter life. Sorry...

I've purchased but haven't yet installed one of these but I am hoping for something great: INSTALL KIT FOR HANDS-FREE CALLING AND MUSIC STREAMING THROUGH YOUR CAR RADIO

POST 9Original post

I've installed the Tranzit BLU HF in my 987.1, and it works well. It even displays song titles in the IP when streaming music from SiriusXM. Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk

POST 10Original post

I replaced the OEM head unit with an Android head unit. That gave me Bluetooth / hand-free phone call, Apple Carplay, Android Auto, Navigation, etc.

POST 11Original post

That is the route I will eventually go, just haven't decided when and what I want to get. The stock Bose system does sound nice and I don't want to lose that, but I'd like to enhance it with more power if that's an option. I just haven't researched it enough to know what's possible.

POST 12Original post

Your car looks great, Black on Black, couldn't go wrong with at combo as that's my scheme as well. I would start a parts bin for just in case issues. A new pair of shifter cables should be sourced. Also a engine water pump, and belt. If you have records of these items being replaced then you are good. Try to change the oil every 3500 miles. There are lots of mentions regarding keeping fresh oil in your M97 engine. If you take good care of it, you will be rewarded with terrific all around power/torque. Try to limit your rpm to just under 7000 to save the rod bolts. There are literally 10 items that can be done to this car to enhance your driving pleasure. You can figure out which ones are best suited to your style of driving. A great choice to begin your Porsche ownership.

POST 13Original post

Water pump was actually changed already, so that's good. Don't see a scenario where I will be putting more than 6000 km (3800 miles) during our rather short canadian summers, so I intend to do oil before each storage. BTW, the roof rack looks great. Thanks to all of you for taking the time to write!
