I lived with this for a while, but in the end got it sorted - control arms on each side replaced == no more clonking!

Leading evidence: 'Replace == no more clonking' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'drop link' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace == no more clonking' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, When travelling across rough surfaces I am hearing some sort of minor clonking noises from the suspension on my '03 C4S. Now it could just be my OCD playing up and this is entirely normal or in my imagination. I've got the opportunity to get the car up on a ramp next weekend and poke around. I know pretty much zero about the workings of anti-roll bars/drop links/tie rods/shocks/springs etc. Any thoughts on probable causes and where I should be looking? Thanks for any help. Edit: should mention, this appears to be coming from the front, probably driver's side.

POST 2Original post

'Clonking' is most likely (in this order): Anti-roll bar drop links Anti-roll bar bushes Forked-end diagonal Control Rod Strut Top Mounts The only one which is easy to test is the ARB drop links. Disconnect one from the bottom end, and you should be able to feel if there is any play in them. A tiny amount of play can make a really annoying rattly clonking noise. IMO You can poke around there all day with a pry bar on the others and not find anything. The only way to tell is to take things to bits to find the cause. BTW, 'Creaking' is usually lower wishbone ball joints. And here's the diagram again!

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Richard H, you are a star (again!). Thanks very much!

POST 4Original post

It is most likely a drop link. I just had one replaced on my 03 C4S - the old piece had a very slight bend in it (I'd probably hit a pot hole or something) and that began to cause a slight knocking, much like your description. A replacement with fitting cost me £150.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I lived with this for a while, but in the end got it sorted - control arms on each side replaced == no more clonking!

POST 6Original post

I'm getting a slight knocking from the rear when going over some local road crossings too. Not big potholes just crossings that are maybe less than an inch deep. The front goes over just fine but the rear gives a bigger jolt. Where is the best place to start, it sounds "bigger" than anti roll bars - maybe shock mounts at the back??

POST 7Original post

i injected my control arm bushes with about 5ml lube each 2 years ago with a hyperdermic needle, not a clonk since.
