Good evening fellow
Porsche
owners! I have never posted in this forum and it sucks that my introduction involves asking for help... I have a 07
Porsche Cayman S
with about 83,500 on the odometer... Whenever I go to drive the car after it's been sitting overnight or a long period of time like that, it makes a whining noise when I turn the wheel and the sound volume varies ( it was a little louder this AM). I've been scouring the internet for similar situations but what makes this one special is that there's no noise when it's just been cranked and idling, the sound only occurs when I make a turn and it's no consistent. I've checked the PS fluid levels and it has not lost a drop. The more I think about it, I'm beginning to think it's because there's something that hasn't warmed up until it's been driven which is when the sound then goes away. There are not performance issues and it drives perfectly, just an annoying whining noise when it's cold and the wheels are turning.. I would appreciate any thoughts or feedback about this and maybe it could help someone else in the long run, I will not hesitate to provide any information requested. Thank you all again!
Power steering fluid level was a good place to start troubleshooting. Can you get someone to help you pinpoint where the noise is coming from such as the steering rack?

I will try to get that squared away this weekend, hopefully it isn't too serious.. Thank you for your input!
I had a similar issue previously. started with a sound upon startup/cold and gradually goes away. Over time the noise gets worse. Need to check power steering system including the pump and lines for leaks. easiest place to check is underneath the car - have a look to see if any leak residue.
other possibilities include the belts and water pump/bearings.
Thank you for the input, I checked the power steering fluid yesterday and it still seemed to all be there but I'll still follow your advise and jack it up to look underneath. I didn't think about the belts or the water pump so I'll definitely look into those as well
haha i understand... a lot of threads here diagnosing sounds of some sort
some sounds can be difficult to trace esp. since our cars make a symphony of sounds
you can see the sample from my troubleshooting. the covers may need to be removed to check further. in my case there was a leak in the power steering line and had to replace some gaskets in the pic (search for power steering repair kit). in my case, the fluid level didn't drop a lot... just a little but as you can see from the pics it looks like a lot more. oh and the sound can be like a 'groan'....
hope this helps!
Thank you so much! I wasn't even aware there was a power steering repair kit. I will definitely start looking for this tomorrow. 🙏
I had the exact same sound on my 10 year old Honda Ridgeline starting around 80K miles. There was an o-ring on the PS line on the vacuum side of the pump that was dried up and it was sucking air past it causing the PS fluid to get "foamy" and cavitating in the pump. My dealer replaced it for practically nothing, problem solved. It sounded like a cow mooing when I turned the steering wheel.
Mine behaved in a similar way. The washer seal inside the steering rack was busted and it filled my inner tie rod end boots with PS fluid even though the reservoir was full. I am not saying this is your problem but something to look in to. Check the boot to see if there is PS in it. This should be dry if it’s operating correctly.
