Porsche of Naples knows how to bring it. The dealership opened its doors at 7 p.m. Jan. 14 to unveil the 2006 Porsche Cayman S.
Upon entering guests were handed red glow stick necklaces to wear and wine and beer glasses whose bases flashed red. They enjoyed a lovely reception in the showroom offering sushi, hors d'oeuvres, and ambient music. Young alligators whose mouths were bound for safety were on-hand to pet (the new model's namesake, Cayman, is a South American breed of alligator).

I started snapping pictures of who I thought was the DJ and began planning for the next event of the night on my schedule. It turned out that the guy whose picture I took wasn't the DJ after all. 'The real party is going to be back there,' he told me cryptically as he pointed to a door guarded by two large bouncers.

Intrigued, I headed over to the bouncers who kept mum about what was through the door, but alluded to the fact that it was a good idea to stick around. I quickly rearranged my plans for the evening and positioned myself at the guarded door.

Once the sleek new Porsche was unveiled to an appreciative crowd, I practically ran into what turned out to be the dealership's garage. The space was a symphony in red, with Porsches on hydraulic lifts throughout, girls in top hats elevated on platforms, and crimson sofas. With guests' glow stick necklaces and flashing stemware, the red theme wound throughout the space. A bar and DJ from Miami completed the garage's transformation into a hot nightclub.

The DJ played jungle beats that got the younger demographic on their feet, with a few older guests showing us how it was done. Raffle tickets were handed out at the door and Porsche T-shirts were thrown into the crowd from both the decorative girls atop their pedestals and the DJ booth.

More girls in catwoman-esque costumes carried around some of the smaller alligators. The top hat girls underwent a costume change about halfway through the event and reappeared on their pedestals in crimson lingerie waving oversized red, feather fans. The effect was somehow reminiscent of the Far East. We could have been in any sexy city in the world.

Somewhere in the haze of a smoke machine I stopped dancing and looked around the event, realizing that Porsche of Naples threw the best party that I've ever been to in our town. All it took was some adolescent alligators, a DJ, a few costumed girls, and a car worth about the same amount as many houses in Naples.

I didn't know you could buy a house in Naples for around $60K ??? $600K maybe...
I think that reporter had had a few drinks when she was getting the prices for the various Porsche models. Probably mixed up the Carrera GT with the Cayman S. Napleshad the highest percentage increase in residential real estate prices in 2005. No doubt the recent appreciation in residential real estate in Southwest Florida had something to do with this party.
