Much more practical and went from two cars to one but never really filled the void left from the Exige so looking at changing again.

Engines where replaced on the early cars that had the fire issues.

The car in question will be used everyday but as I work overseas there isn't much of a criteria.

Suggestion
I do find it hard to believe they wont offer further help/incentive as it wont look great for the brand when in reality they should have just replaced every engine when the defect was found.

Suggestion
I think I read that if the car hasn’t had a replacement engine and you track it there’s a quite high chance it will need replacing….it’s max revs track use that is the problem with them I believe.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Morning all,
Looking at getting into Porsche ownership for the first time having narrowed my search down to several cars. I'm aware the Porsche GT market doesn't really follow any other trends with highs & lows. Similar to the Lotus market when I had my V6 Exige. Bought an M2 after that. Much more practical and went from two cars to one but never really filled the void left from the Exige so looking at changing again. Still tempted by a Nissan GTR simply due to the amount of car for not alot of money.
Anyway, I'm looking at 981 GT4, 991.1 GT3 and 911.2 GTS. The car in question will be used everyday but as I work overseas there isn't much of a criteria. I have a small dog which I don't mind putting in front seat but the 911 is obviously more practical for that, only do a couple thousand miles a year aswell.
I'm aware car prices are inflated at the moment so will happily hold off until the new year but curious to see which car would keep their value best. Also keen to hear experiences and opinions on the choices above.
Cheers
Owned a 991.2 gt3, driven a gt4 and owned a 991.2 gts.
If you are driving everyday, gts is a great all rounder. Cant fault it. I would suggest the rear wheel drive not 4wd for a better driving feel. PDK great in traffic.
GT3 is a beast, but the moments you get are not enough as an everyday. Its a weekend trackday car and seems a little wasted as a daily.
GT4, really liked this car, especially manual.
All cars have strong residuals. I would suggest GTS will cope better with higher milage, that being 6-8k or more. Under that, both GT3 and GT4 should be fine, but as said for me a little wasted as a daily.
If you want the best experience, GT3.
Quite different cars when it comes to the driving experience:
981 GT4 - 3.8ltr NA, manual only, engine as standard could be better
991.1 GT3 - 3.8ltr NA with PDK only and slightly dodgy engines
911.2 GTS - 3ltr turbo, most will be PDK
For residuals, I would expect the GT cars to be best. Same for feeling a bit more special, especially with buckets.

But perhaps not if putting reasonable miles a year on?
Thanks for all the replies and information. Totally understand what you mean by not getting the full experience everyday with a GT3 but would likely get decent runs and possibly track time every other month.
The GTS seemed like a very good all rounder and would opt for rear wheel drive also as suggested.
GT3/4 is the one I'd like most but really need to drive them both first probably.
A lot of people will say it’s not an issue but the 10yr engine warranty on the 991.1 GT3 will expire on the earliest cars in 2023. Yes you can buy an extended warranty but we don’t know how expensive that will be…I would read up very carefully on the engine issues. I think I read that if the car hasn’t had a replacement engine and you track it there’s a quite high chance it will need replacing….it’s max revs track use that is the problem with them I believe. Lots have had replacement engines and some more than one.
If you want a GT3 at similar money I’d be looking at a 997.2….much safer place for your money.
I was facing a similar choice a couple of years ago. I tried the 991.1 GT3 and the 991.2 GTS, rear-wheel drive, PDK.
I decided with my head that the GTS would be the better car for the road and it did everything exceptionally well. To the point that I found it rather boring on the road (good on the track though).
With hindsight, I should have gone for the GT3 - there was more of a feeling of being connected to the driving experience, with even the PDK having a more mechanical feel somehow.
I've now gone for an older 911 but if I was choosing again between these cars I'd go for the GT3 over the GTS.
I was in the same position (GTS.2 or 991.1GT3) - The GTS is a great car but for the amount i would use it i didnt think it would feel special enough. I ended up with a CS .1 GT3, it looks, drives and feels a level above. Glad i bit the bullet and went for it, you can wait forever otherwise and who knows where the car market will be this time next week - next year is a total unknown! Regarding the so called 'chocolate engines' my friend did 5 track days this year and 17k miles in 14 months and his didnt miss a beat. If it does then the engine gets replaced, in my opinion when it comes to extending the 10 year warranty if you cant afford it then you probably shouldn't have a GT3 anyway...

Can someone clarify the 10 yer engine warranty?
I thought Porsche had a 3 year warranty ?
991.1 GT3s had very public engine issues which involved a few cars catching fire. As a result, lots have been replaced and I think all cars worldwide got given a 10 year engine warranty.
It's specific to the 991.1 GT3 only.
Interestingly AP gave this PU a lot of praise… of course being ‘his own’ project.. but reckoned that the rated power output of 475ps is underrated and that actually Porsche will still continue to show goodwill on cars that have failures past the 10year guarantee.

Engines where replaced on the early cars that had the fire issues. The 10 year warranty came from the intake lobes rounding off and causing misfires at high RPM. Apparently due to an issue with the metal used? The 9krpm was was lowered on the RS clearly to protect against the issue. As a result if your engine goes bang inside 10 year build date then you get a new uprated 'G series" engine. They have said once the 10 year lapses you can add another 5 at a cost but not mentioned the cost yet. I do find it hard to believe they wont offer further help/incentive as it wont look great for the brand when in reality they should have just replaced every engine when the defect was found.
It will be interesting to see what the likes of RPM etc do when the warranty ends on some cars and people look elsewhere- ie rebuilds protecting against the defect. Preventative maintenance along the lines of the IMS issues etc seen in the 996.

thanks. Thats a shame!
from your description, to me it sounds like the 991.1 GT3 is the best option. Not on your list, but I would also consider a 997.2 GT3 at a similar price if you want a GT3 with a manual (it will imo also hold value better than the other cars on your list). I have semi-daily driven my 997.2 RS and apart from not having aircon, it is perfectly acceptable imo as long as you don't mind scraping noises from time to time on driveways etc.

Thanks again for the replies.
The 997.2 GT3's are like gold dust. Legit never see them advertised and when I do they are mental priced but would consider one.
