POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello all, Further to my introduction that I have posted below and now added some photos. About 3 weeks ago I purchased a basket case. In  other words I basically bought it in a basket. It is a 77 guards red 911 original Australian delivered car and rust free. It was stripped and began being back dated 10 years ago by the previous owner who unfortunately passed away 3 years ago. His family didn't know what to do with the car until they recently decided it was too big a task for them to complete. The previous owner was going down a 73 rsr replica path and was building to targa and hill climb. I bought it as a shell on a trolley that has had the long nose panel work done on the front. It has been seem welded, has had stainless oil cooler lines placed through the tunnel and adjustable mounts placed in the rear therefore the rear seat wells removed. Patrick racing oil tank mounted, a full cage fitted. The cage had not been signed off with CAMS and because it was done almost 10 years ago was now not compliant. I have now had the cage updated and signed off. I got a lot of new parts with the car that have never been fitted. As mentioned this was being built basically as a race car but I am going down a more weekend club day car path. Some of the items include a 3.2 litre engine with Nickies cylinders, JE pistons, Xtreme racing heads, Doherty racing cams. 50mm PMO carbs among an array of other things all new in boxes. For the brakes I got Tilton pedal box and associated parts, and Brembo Grand Turismo brake kits for all corners along with custom made 17" Fuchs wheels x 8 and x 10. Front end is Smart racing ERP, swab bar and bump steer kit and for the rear Smart racing sway bar etc. It also came with FOX racing coil-overs for all corners. There is an array of other items, like twin spark distributor, lexen windows, Giken superlock diff, Fuel safe racing cell, Wevo engine mounts etc etc etc. Although all of it is still in a million pieces. The plan is; the engine is being assembled currently, the gearbox will be started soon, the cage has been done, the car finishes its sand blast next week. It will then get painted everywhere except the outer so assembly can start. Currently confirming leather and the interior will start also. I am being very ambitious and wanting it done by Christmas. Wish me luck. In will attempt to add some photos. Maybe to another post. I will more that likely need some parts as some stage so any help will be appreciated. Jason. And today we sand blasted and delivered home.

Jason, is that Scott's car in the background of this photo, or your car???   And was the 77 in Tassie or a mainland import?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello, It is Scott's and yes the car was local.

POST 4Original post

Quotes source post: 319532

So you're up north then 🙂 Hadn't heard about the basket case, must keep my ear closer to the ground 😜 David R doing the engine or the guy up near connector park?  Looking forward to checking it out when its finished - mightn't be too long the way you're pushing on with it 🙂

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes I am in Launceston, where are you located? And sorry but I didn't catch your name. Ringer is helping a bit but Lupo is doing the engine. You are welcome to come and have a look at any stage.

POST 6Original post

Yep, in Lonnie too, Peter's the name 🙂 Didn't know Robert played with Porsche engines, but no doubt he will do a great job as he's renowned for his race engines.  Ringers looks after my GT3 and wife's 981 🙂

Jason,  Northern PCT run on Sunday, finishing at the motor museum approx 10.30 to join in the Eurosports Cars & Coffee.  Come on down and catch up with some of the guys and gals.  I'm going straight to museum, be there about 9.30 or so, but leaving early as we're off to Cradle. cheers Peter

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So we have the car in primer now and have put some KBS rust seal on the on the front inner guards and the Frunk followed by Blacktop Chassis coater in satin black. Next step will be to get the inner floor and outer floor painted so some assembly can begin. Everyday is like Christmas when the mail man comes at the moment. Coilover springs for the FOX shocks arrived along with Tilton reservoir, the ARP engine stud kit, new wheel bearings and some other odds and ends.

POST 10Original post

That’s a seriously good basket case’ you have acquired

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Agreed, the more I get in to it the luckier I am. The shell is immaculate.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Some shiny bits going in this weekend.

POST 15Original post

Jeez mate, you're not hanging around.  Your Christmas date may well be achievable I think!!

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 321404

That's the plan mate. But this is all the easy stuff at the moment. Another productive weekend. Fuel cell and oil tank final fitment, just waiting for hosing and fittings to be delivered. Oil cooler first fitment. Lots of front suspension and brake work done. Next will be some final fitment in the front end, some more paint on the cage etc, fuel lines and oil lines, pedal box and reservoir fitment with some brake lines.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok, so it has been a couple of weeks since an update due to a lot of kids Soccer. The latest is, more painting has been done. Engine compartment, inside of cab and roll-cage. Don't ever volunteer to paint a roll cage, its hard. Tilton pedal box has been fitted for the final time along with master cylinders. Tilton reservoir has been mounted and braided lines are beginning to be made. Peterson oil tank is in and being plumbed. Steering column is back in and Smart racing quick release with Prototipo steering wheel on, although there is something special on its way to be fitted to this. Next jobs are, rear suspension and brake fit up, fuel lines, clutch line and brake lines. Hydraulic e brake, and brake bias valve. Then electrical.

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So some more slow progress this weekend. Spring plates were fitted along with coilovers and rear sway bar. All went together beautifully and looks amazing. Did some more speedflow fuel and brake hosing. Put in some more Dynamat lite and starting to think about other items inside the cab. Also beginning to fit up some panels. Next week hopefully I will have a steering rack and rear trailing arms so we can almost make this thing a roller. Fuel pumps, filters and reg's etc will be here so may get them fitted up and more plumbing done. Wiring shouldn't be far away. A massive job with a couple of fancy pieces to be fitted there. Anyone got any thoughts if running Alcantara and basket weave leather together is a no no??

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 323251

I can handle slow @Spotta Just hurry up and get it done by Christmas, so I can get you to build me one for Easter

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So another weekend and a little more progress. Front hubs came back off and fitted Elephant racing studs and nuts. Steering rack and turbo tie rods went on. Fuel lines plumbed up from front to back. Brakes lines have started getting made and emergency brake fitment as well as brake bias control. Do not ever volunteer to make brake lines, and if you do don't use stainless. Rear control arms fitted with elephant racing spherical bushes. Just waiting on new rear wheel bearings to finish back end fit up. Next week will be to get it on all 4 wheels and on the ground. Finish plumbing brake lines and bleed brakes. Fit fuel filters, fuel pumps and fuel pressure regs.  Hopefully some electrical arrives soon so I can get it wired up.

Looking great Jason.  I found out which car it is, had great bones to start with, I think Rob, if he was still with us, would be very happy with what you're doing with it 🙂 . Can you PM your phone no, or I'll see if cousin Mike has it, and perhaps make plans to check it out next weekend???

POST 26 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So not as much progress as I would have liked this weekend as my rear wheel bearings among a few other things didn't show up. Did some tidying up of the front suspension and some more brake line and fuel line work. Mounted fuel pumps etc. Cut out some of the German Square weave carpet. Got all of the gearbox parts together ready for assembly. Cases back from the US after having the inserts fitted, OS Giken diff center to go in, tilton oil pump and cooler, AP racing clutch and flywheel all ready to be assembled.

POST 28Original post

Had a good look at @Spotta 's work this afternoon, great job so far, very neat and meticulous.  Really looking forward to seeing this on the road!!!!

POST 29 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

A little more work done this weekend. Had a lot of kids soccer also therefore not as much as done as I would have liked. Brake lines almost finished, fuel lines done, all steering components tension and finished, rear brakes and wheels on so she is a roller. Next job to finish brakes, plumb up oil system and wiring. The custom wiring is a big job so wish me luck.

POST 31 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello All, So got an email back from Harry at Porsche Australia today who confirmed the following for me about my car. 1977 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe 5 speed manual. Guards Red. Kork leatherette with Beige tarten inlay. Built 9th March 1977. Australian Specification. Tourist delivery (not sure what that means) Options - C23 = Australian RHD. 261 = Plain Passenger mirror. 401 = 7 +8 x 15 Fuchs. 441 = Electric antenna and loudspeaker. 473 = Front and rear spoiler. 481 = 5 speed gearbox. 650 = Sunroof. Now, after finding all that out I think I am going to paint it back to guards red. In addition I am tempted to make it a short bonnet RSR not a long bonnet. Any thoughts or advice on what the inexperienced should do. Increase/decreasing value etc?

POST 33Original post

Quotes source post: 325767

I say build the car you want, it is a long way from how it was delivered with front & rear flares, sunroof delete, cage and race interior. IMHO I don't think it will make too much difference in making it long vs. short bonnet from a value proposition as the person who would buy it when you are finished will not be an anorak- it will be a cracking car!

POST 34Original post

"Tourist delivery" is when the buyer collects the car from the Porsche factory in Germany. "C23" is the area designation for Australia, meaning its Australian specification (most countries have their own differences in spec) and should be plated with the Australian design rules compliant plate in the frunk. I think! If the original engine is gone and so many other things have been altered already I would stick to your first plan & build the car for you & not what you/we think the market may prefer. Value wise I would guess a long hood would be higher but that is a personal view. Car looks great already.

POST 35Original post

Cool spec originally.  Someone had a lot of fun in 1977 goon got pick that up. Guarda red overr those big hips - cool.  I’d think about the cork theme as well for inside.

POST 36Original post

Quotes source post: 324081

Nice! Where did you find the buttons and plate? Edit. Found it

POST 37 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source posts: 325776, 325797

Hello, It is from Cartek out of the UK. It is wireless so the quick release on the wheel can function with no wires. Unfortunately the interior is beyond on the cork. A lot of money has been invested in black square weave etc. Thanks for your help. I think I am sticking with the long hood but will go guards red, so it matches its build plate.

POST 38 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello all, Its been a little while since an update. So after lots of deliberation I am going back to original color of guards red but staying with the backdate. Had a long chat to a guy by the name of Mike Tankard out of Melbourne who supplies all the glass panels for these cars and is an old Porsche guy from way back. So below. All brake lines are finished. I am happy with the way the stainless lines have come up and they should be out of the way and work well. Fuel pumps, fuel taps,  fuel lines, fuel filters and regulators are all plumbed up. Just need to mount the regs. I have spent a lot of time on the oil system. I have the cooler finished and mounted. The oil thermostat is in, oil breather tank is mounted and needs plumbing and just waiting on the oil filters to finish the system. Have also made a start on the wiring. Spending a lot of evenings with the lounge room floor covered in wiring building looms atm. Also made up a dash panel to cover up all the holes i wont be using. I will then cover this in leather and just mount what I need.

Looking awesone - Love the work!! Can someone educate me? I have noticed this on a few 'hot rods' now and with the above picture, the banana arm brackets seem elongated upwards. Also with a stopper bolt? I can't figure out their purpose - Can someone chime in please?

POST 40Original post

Quotes source post: 326282

Are you referring to these ? I believe they are camber adjustment

POST 41Original post

Quotes source post: 326293

Ahhhh...So the brackets are also slotted to move the arm up and down. Roger that - That makes sense now 💡 Cheers!

POST 42 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 326282

They are for lowered vehicles to reset the roll radius. When you lower an independent rear the camber adjusts significantly and then during compression even further. By moving the arm up it resets the camber position to a more neutral position to increase tyre contact.

POST 47 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok, so a bit of an update. Fuel system completely finished with regs bolted up and everything flushed. Oil system has been finished with thermostat, cooler, peterson inline oil filters and a lot of Speedflow items. Brakes are finished with e brake and proportioning valve plumbed up, brakes bled. The next job is to fit up the doors and all panel work in preparation for paint. Trying to get in to paint for the first few weeks in November. Could help but place the shifter and a seat in also.

Hello, Been a couple of weeks due to a lot of kids sport and other commitments but work has not stopped by any stretch. Some update photos. But I have accepted the fact Christmas wont happen. I cant get a painter that works by the same time frame that I want to. So we will have to keep making progress until the painter is ready.

POST 52 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello all, I am sure you all thought the project was on the back burner but there has still be some movement. Unfortunately my expertise does not lie in panel work and its been some slow progress. I am currently trying to secure someone to paint the car. So if anyone knows someone who can help, I would be happy to ship to Victoria etc. I am also now waiting on my gearbox and engine. I have a feeling they may not be ready by Christmas unfortunately. I will continue to plug away until I can get the car painted and get and engine and gearbox in it. Aside form that I am very happy with how it is looking and am confident it is going to turn out ok. If I don't post again until next year, I hope everyone has a safe and merry festive season.

Hello Luzzo, Ok, so this will create some controversy I am sure. It is guards red, or Indischrot or India red. Whatever you would like to call it. But the original mix code for my car is 027. I have used the Indischrot mix code of 84A. Its the current day Indischrot/Guards red.

hey @Spotta , No need for controversy, this is your build.  Build it your way and own it. Love it

Looks very good. Who did you end up using for paint? Body work and paint is the 1 thing I have no skill.. always good to know who is recommended.

To be honest I don’t think I will bring it out in public until spring. Winter is getting close and rather than rush I will take the winter to finish it properly. I don’t generally drive any of my cars in winter at the best of times.

POST 69 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It’s been a while between updates. Engine coming along. Car would be back from painters in a couple of days.

So what is the motor build going to be? I’m working through a 2.7 build at the moment

POST 72 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 342487

Hello, Its a 3.2 twin spark out to a 3.4 with some Nikkis cylinders and Jp racing items. Doherty cams etc.

POST 73Original post

Quotes source post: 342707

Is it rude to ask which DR cam you are using?

POST 74 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 342708

DC-80-104

POST 75Original post

Quotes source post: 342709

interesting! compression ratio? stock crank or something special? What induction will you be using to work with those big cams?

POST 76 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 342710

Compression ratio should be just over 10-1, billet crank and 50mm PMO's

POST 77Original post

Look great mate, did Micra do a good job?  Never thought of them for a "special" car like this.

POST 78 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It’s an amazing job. It wasn’t done by Micra as such we just hired their booth and facilities to put the color on at the end. The facility they have is second to none.

POST 79Original post

Billet crank - noice.  If you don't mind me asking, which one? Cheers, Mark

Looking good Jason!!  Really looking forward to seeing this on the road, as no doubt you are. Just a tip re photos, full res photos can chew up your allowance, look to use a re-sizing app to reduce the size before uploading, or become a Financial Member and your limit increases substantially 😉

POST 84 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 359467

Thank you, yes I am there is no doubt about that. I did become a financial member when I first joined. I am presuming this must be an annual subscription then as I haven't had trouble uploading in the past. I presume I have been a member for a year and that is the reason.

Most likely the issue, and yes, it is an annual subscription.  I had the same problem when Paypal didn't auto renew one year
