okay, so kind of an odd question that I can't really seem to find an answer for.
I'm a BMW guy and this is my first Porsche, so please be nice. Or don't, whatever, kids are too sensitive these days anyway.
Is there some software with obd cables or whatnot that I can use to program things like tilt down right mirror, number of turn signal blinks, using the key remote to raise windows or lower windows, etc.
Little stuff like that. So yeah, just curious if any of this stuff is possible.
Actually, while I'm here (and I suppose you as well), is there any advice you'd give a new owner on what to do immediately when taking ownership of these cars?
It's a 2010 CS (987.2 CS) 6 speed with 80k on it.
Thank you all and for anyone willing to provide a newb with some guidance.
Some settings can be customized at the dealer (or a well outfitted indie) using PIWIS, or you can get a Durametric
Pro
cable and DIY. However, I don't know if those things you asked about can be tweaked. If the "tilt down" you mention is for when you go into reverse, I believe that only works with electric seats since it requires the included memory. If you have electric seats, leave the mirror control set to the passenger mirror and it dips automatically in reverse. You need to save the seat settings for the angle to be remembered. It is is saved separately for each key.
Some aftermarket gizmo can do the window thing. Its been a long time since I've seen it mentioned. IIRC it also could lower/raise the top on a Boxster.
One thing I've been wanting to do is program my 987.2 Cayman so the windows drop a little when the hatch is opened. Relieves air pressure to make closing easier. There's a write-up in the Articles
durametric-tutorial-part-2
on various patches you can do with PIWIS or Durametric PRO (not the cheaper Enthusiast version). I know somewhere there's a thread with even more interesting settings. BTW, the Pro can be rented on ebay (when one is available)
Durametric Pro
Can't help you with the other stuff, but if you turn the side mirror adjusting knob to the right then the right mirror will dip when you go into reverse. If the knob is straight then it won't move.
Re: advice on what to do first -
With 80K miles on it, unless you have documentation that shows recent service, I would
- change the oil (read up on this, it's different than "normal" cars)
- flush the brake and clutch fluid
- check power steering fluid (under the top hatch in the trunk)
- check coolant level
- check rotors and pads
- change air filter and cabin filter
- inspect serpentine belt (remove the cover behind the seats)
You might also check the coil packs and plugs. If you live in a harsher climate, the coil packs can crack and cause misfires. If the car was babied and garaged, this is less likely.
Above all, take it out and drive like the dickens! It's a fantastically balanced car that will put a smile on your face.
Right on!
Thanks guys!
Any recs on which fluids to go with? oil, coolant, brake fluid, transaxle? OEM oil filters, etc.
For oil, many of us go with the factory-recommended Mobil 1, but there are lots of opinion on this one. If you will be tracking the car, you may want to go with Gibbs' or one of the others that the engine builders like.
Brake fluid: Unless you track your car, the normal recommended stuff is fine. Don't use racing fluid unless you are really on the track, it has a high boiling point but needs replacing often.
Coolant and PS fluid: make sure you get the correct stuff, it is different than the normal Pep Boys fluid. Coolant needs to be Si-OAT, I use Zerex G-40. PS fluid is Pentosin CHF 202.
For transmission oil, go with the factory-recommended weight. I use Red Line.
For filters, brake pads, etc. I get OEM parts, but not the Porsche-branded items. Same parts but saves a bunch of money.
