My Power steering is leaking, and I finally found it. It would be much easier to fix it if I knew how to take the engine cover off behind the seats. I tried the search funtion, but only got the top part of the engine cover. Anyone know how to do it?
Here is where the leak is.
First remove carpet cover over the main engine cover. The front side of the engine cover clips into a plastic trim piece that has that small little roll bar looking thing. The bar has a rubber cover at each end. Pull both rubber covers up. That will reveal a 12 pt socket head bolt at each end of the bar. There is a special tool for this but a Torx bit will remove it. The Torx bit will fit a little loose so make sure you use a little downward pressure. The bar will then pull out. Under the bar there is one small Torx bolt that holds the trim piece down, remove it. There are a few other clips that hold the trim piece down. You can use a trim removal tool to release the clips or do it by hand. If done by hand, from one side of the car grab the trim piece by hand on each side (front & back) and lift straight up, then go to the other side of the car and do the same thing. Once the trim piece is removed the carpet behind the seats easily pulls out. Behind the carpet is a cover plate similar to the one on top with about 8 bolts in it.
Do you actually have a leak? Have you been to the track or autocross.
The power steering reservoir is very small. It has an overflow/vent at the top with a tube that is about 3” long. If the reservoir is overfilled it will dump oil on the top or you engine. That might be where the oil is coming from.
DE track events are also a big problem. The oil overheats and then overflows the reservoir. My previous
Cayman
lost about 3
oz
oil every event. The oil would build up on the top of the engine till it ran down the front side. My current
Cayman
has never lost any steering fluid on the track.
If you have been to the track or recently filled your reservoir I would clean things up and see if the oil leak continues under normal driving conditions. If you have not done any of these things then you probably do have a leak.
Just noticed that your picture is not a power steering line that is a coolant hose. The
power steering pump
and lines are on the other (drivers) side of the engine.
I have attached a picture of the engine out of the car. In the picture top left is the
alternator
, center is the AC compressor, and right is the
power steering pump

Thanks for the picture Kermit. I do have a leak, but I have not been to the track at all. in the picture you ca see the hose that is wet, there is red fluid coming out of it, and it smells like hydrolic fluid.
I will pull the engine cover so i can get to that hose to see what it is.
The
Porsche
power steering fluid is very light blue/green, the coolant is red but the steering fluid could have been topped off with different fluid since the Porsce fluid is only available at the dealer.
The power steering lines are the two steel lines in the picture on the opposite side of the engine that run parallel just at top of the head then both turn down. Just below that they change to rubber lines. The quick connection back to steel is almost directly under the drivers seat. The drivers side skid pan must be removed to access this connection.
Could the heat from being in the summer in Atlanta cause this also? It is my DD, and we had 89 days of over 90 degrees. I sat in a lot of traffic with the car reading 105.
I am going to pull the engine cover off and see what I can find. The fluid is red in color, so I may more issues that I think.
