You can use a small screwdriver, but maybe easier for most is to take a paperclip.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I've got a key with a dead battery. I figured out how to remove the cover from the key, which exposed the key. But how the heck do you gett hete battery out? I searched this site, goggled it, even checked youtube, nothing. I'm sure this is embarrassingly easy, but I don't want to break anything within the key's innards. Someone please give me some simple steps for replacing the battery in the key. I have an 07 Cayman (base). Thanks! Michael (slightly red in the face)

POST 2Original post

It is really easy, but no need to be embarrased...god this place would be boring if we all knew everything! A video would make it so easy...maybe I'll post one up! First a bit about the structure; The battery is retained by 3 plastic parts, 2 longer legs and a smaller rentention clip. Between the two longer legs is a brass contact which also acts as a spring to keep the battery in place. You can use a small screwdriver, but maybe easier for most is to take a paperclip. Unfold the first part of the paperclip to 90 degress so you have a kind of lever arm. Now looking at the battery retainers you will see next to the single and smallest retainer it has gaps either side of it, now slot the open arm of the paperclip into either of and lever towards the brass contact and up, which will compress the spring and out the battery will pop up. You need to lever under the battery slightly to pop it up, so I found if you insert the clip start off to the left (key pointing right) of the small clip and lever there and work round pushing towards the contact. Once you've done it the picture in the owners manual may make a bit more sense
