OP, the dealer uses their “Select” programme to sell cars that they can’t sell through their main dealers for reasons such as too old/too many miles & also too much cost to bring up to accepted standards for the official main dealer /manufacturer wty standards so I’d recommend an inspection as MrVert says & check the claims limit on their warranty policy (just in case).

Changed concept of the cars I wanted, originally was looking for 997.2 PDK and a new small electric car as a daily, but the ones I drove were hopeless, so went for a hybrid (Cupra Formentor) which is a lot more fun, and as also didn’t want to tie up too much cash in the 997 bought a MG ZT 260 (the one re-engineered to rear wheel drive and with a Ford Mustang V8) as more of a weekend car / future classic.

I was looking for a 997.2 PDK, a little younger though until a couple of months ago when I decided on a change of course. I’d say you have the holy trinity of PSE, Sport Chrono and Sports Steering Wheel, but you have the ‘cover everything in sight’ beige / tan / brown interior which is great if your thing but balances out the other options Mileage is good for 2009 so I’d say the price is pretty good, especially for main dealer (assuming it is a main dealer).

POST 3Original post

Looks nice, got all the right options, priced ok in todays market… Tan dash can reflect quite badly on the windscreen in bright sunlight, but that’s all. Get an inspection done on the underside, lots or parts can corrode badly and need replacement iff not already done. Can throw up a £1.5k bill at an Indy quite easily.

Haha thanks, I can see the tan interior divides opinion which is why there are mostly black ones around. It is a Sytner dealership so not Porsche but perhaps better than your average one. What did you change course for? The other car I was looking at in this price is a Targa 4 PDK (not S) but these also seem to divide opinion. Hard to get an well looked after honest 997.2 below £45k from what I can tell.

Thanks, do you have a tan interior version? It has the ventilated seats, not sure if those are any good, also seem to divide opinion. Good tip about looking at the underside.

POST 6Original post

Had a Boxster S back in 2010 with sand leather interior incl. dash. For 95% of the time it’s fine, but can be quite distracting if the sun’s front on and high in the sky, causing reflections. If everything else checks out, don’t let it put you off though. They’re great sports cars.

POST 8Original post

Looks lovely. Love the colour combination and price seems OK considering the crazy world we are in. Have you had a chance to look underneath as there are a lot of detail parts that can be seized or corroded at this age. When I got my last Porsche they put it up on the ramp for me to poke about and I find a couple of minor issues which they fixed for free but would have cost me £.

Thanks good tip! It seems like as you say they only sell newer or lower mileage cars through Porsche. This car was sold by Porsche West London about 6-7 years ago to a previous owner.

to the original poster by chance happened to look at this forum. Ive also been in the hunt for a 997.2, and I actually saw this one come up. I have a deposit/offer down on another one priced a bit higher but below 50k. The going price really does seem to be around 45-50k for a good quality gen 2. Im eagerly awaiting my guy to independently inspect in early April, then hopefully will get the motor delivered. Whilst I also feel like I got a good deal given what is out there right now, I can't help but think we are paying the top end prices haha, but people say it keeps going up? I was having a look back 2-3 years ago and it seems it was maybe <£40k? then happy to have a chat, as we both look to be new black gen 2 owners ha

Value wise from what I can tell the 997 market is softening slightly, in that cars have been sitting at the higher asking prices and are gradually being reduced £1K at a time. My maths says it should on average cost about £2.5-3K per annum to run a 13 year old 911 over the course of a couple of years. A manual may hold long term value better than the PDK. But my guess is that a 997.2 S PDK that one buys now at 45K with 50K miles easily could be around 38-40K in 3 years time with let’s say 60-70K miles on it - feel free to correct me if you disagree! So total cost around 5-6K per annum with the additional service costs.

Looks good to me assuming it passes an inspection, make sure the sports exhaust actuator is working as they seize. Vented seats are pretty useless but better than nothing in the summer I suppose.

As time goes on, I think the manual will fare slightly better than the PDK. Depends if you want an investment car or one to drive. If you get stuck on the residuals….you’ll not enjoy it anywhere near as much. Depends on your use of course, I’d try them both before you buy. The manual does give a bit more interaction and connection with the car, but the PDK is very good and you could prefer it.

Cool, I agree it should be more about enjoyment than residuals - but at the same time it's hard earned money so don't want to lose it too quick! Thanks for your tips MrVert!

From advice Ive had, having is the S model + sportschrono + paddles, transforms the car... my time horizon for holding will probably be 1-2 years so less then you, but thats because of personal circumstances. I dont think we can compare it to say 2019/2020 where the porsche would have appreciated? but I would hope to not lose 4-5k£ per year on the total value haha, otherwise there are some other great new vehicles out there that I would put £50k+ towards ....are you forecasting that decline given your view of the prices right now? how do you see that drop for 991.1 which are not too further on from these prices, probably £60-70k for a quality 991.1s given this market right now

PDK not as good as my old Golf 7.5 DSG, in my opinion. DSG cut the ignition slightly during upshifts resulting in a positive shift. PDK slips the clutch slightly for smoothness. You could argue smooth is good mid-corner, but I get the impression PDK maps are more suited to the gentleman driver in the Carrera, not the track day enthusiast (like in the GT cars, which have different PDK units). Its a little slushy for me, even with Sport Plus selected in Sport Chrono. Also, have the Sport Steering with paddles, and there is a delay in pulling the paddle to initiating the shift. In the Golf, there was no perceivable delay. The travel distance of the paddle is too large, it gives a perception of more delay. Ive stuck blocks on the back of the steering wheel to restrict the travel. The later cars (e.g. Macan 2017) have wheels with much less paddle travel. Im seriously considering this as an upgrade. Another gripe is the manual shift selector. Its set the wrong way round compared to racing shifts. Push forward to upshift, backwards to downshift!! Its counter-intuitive. Sadly, there are only a few companies offering TCU (PDK) software changes. Im seriously considering a Cobb Accessport with PDK updates to switch the manual shift direction, faster shift times, less slip and faster paddle times. If I was looking again for my C2S, I would be buying a manual. Way more engaging. PDK only works well at 10/10 driving in manual mode. Standing start acceleration (traffic light drag racing) is brutal. However!!! In auto mode, just cruising around, its super smooth and optimised for emissions/economy. Very good if you want to go to the shops. Not what I bought the car for....

If you were using the car primarily on B roads and for long highway drives, you would probably be better off with a manual. If you are using it in daily city traffic a lot of the time with a wife who hates manual shifters, you would probably be better off with a PDK. The manual will ironically hold more value despite originally being a cheaper option in my view - because new cars will be gearless in the future. That is if you can find a 997.2 manual south of 50K!

If you are buying from a dealer today and selling back to trade in 2 years, you will lose the dealership premium which seems around £5K. Add to this average £3K a year to run/maintain one. So if I was buying from a dealer today, running for 2 years you could lose £10K. This is just my view.

POST 29Original post

Mine had £300 worth of repairs in 3 years and didn't lose anything in depreciation (bought privately, sold to dealer). Had one service and one set of tyres, that was about it really. But yes, worst case you might lose £10k in 2 years but if you buy well then I think that's unlikely.

I'll just have a look at the cars and make my own judgement onsite.

I'd requested APR & they said it was the same. No it isnt, its about double APR I informed their finance director. In the end I hit them hard on the price & got a nice day out at King Power Stadium to watch Leicester City (boring draw with Brighton) But they were a shambles. Mid £40's looks about right in todays market. Have a C2S PDK Cab & bl##dy love the thing. Get the PDK fluids changed as it needs doing & makes shifts fast as new again. Book handling set up with C Gravity before taking delivery as the wait list is months. Chris will transform your car. Good to see Sytners have remained consistent for the last 6 years *pants piss:ng emoji*

I was just about to ask if you'd seen the paperwork, V5 and service book etc on the car. It hasn't moved much in the last 2 years and seems to have had mixed levels of 'care', judging by the MOT history. Re Cridfords, I'm not far from them and remember reading a thread on here where someone was saying how great they are. It looked as if it was an employee/owner of the firm singing their own praises. I'll try and find it. Local Porsche indys worth talking to are Parr in Crawley and Precision Porsche in Sussex, who have an excellent service department, highly recommended. I'd suggest getting Precision to do a PPI when you find a car you fancy.

I'm not sure how much negotiating room the average Porsche dealer has vs a normal dealer (tends to be £750-1,000).

Good to see Sytners have remained consistent for the last 6 years *pants piss:ng emoji* Yeah the experience with these big dealership conglomerates, especially if dealing from a distance, seems very mixed from location to location. It really bothers me how the first two things they talk about is how you are going to fund the car and some form of Autoglym protection and GAP. When you tell them you first need to agree the price of the car, they say yes but it is their fiduciary duty to discuss these things. Haha! I'm getting to the stage where I would probably not buy a good car from a crappy dealership, it is just not worth the stress anymore. Thanks for the tips re the PDK and the handling setup- I have heard about him on the BMW forums too.
