Folks, Hello. New here. I have searched and searched but cannot find the info needed on the more current cars. Hope you can help.
I have a 2011
Boxster Spyder
. I have the sound plus package but cannot figure out how to get to the left and right top dash speakers. I do not want to just start pulling the small grills up without knowing what I am doing. Are they just tweeters under them? When grill is out can you access the change out?
I read here that there is a cross over issue between the door sub and the tweeters? Does not affect the full range in the door? I do enjoy my music at times and was looking to just do a speaker change out. I can get some nice speakers I am sure with the ohm spec to run with the stock amp.
Not an expert here so please take it easy on me. Thanks for any advise. This is my first porsche but I came from a Lotus so it should not be to bad!
I recall when I had my
Cayman
R stereo done the tweeters in the dash were disconnected and just left there because they are 1 inch speakers which you are not going to find anything good to put in there. to get the grill tops off just pry they pop off and there is a little piece of fabric screening to keep out dust. Attached are the speakers from my 2010 Base
Cayman
, same tweeters

The ensuing thread initiated by Hoshi is an excellent place to start given that you are interested in removing the left and right dash-mounted tweeters:

. The thread has photos of the tweeters and lots of good advice for removing them, as well as suggestions for improving the sound quality of the stereo. Note that the thread deals with the Bose system, but outside of the "stuffing the subwoofer material," it applies to the sound package plus system, as best I can tell.
I did the capacitor modification to the tweeters, and my ears tell me that it is a nontrivial improvement to the high frequencies. Perhaps you might also try my suggestions of adding some sound damping material and acoustical foam to the two aluminum engine covers. All together, these modifications really improved the quality of the Bose system in my Boxster S.
I hope this information proves useful to you.
Guys... Thanks much... Good reading and I like the concept. Now I just need the guts to dig into my new Spyder. Will let you know how I make out when its not 15 degrees out.. Interesting solutions.
Hey DaveT, How deep is the cavity that they sit in from the grill to the bottom? I have no problem having a tweeter sticking out through the grill with the body below. Wonder how much space I may have. Sorry my car is packed away currently.
The tweeter almost sits flush with the top of the grill if I remember, the speaker is 2/3" inch high. So to answer you question not very high.
Hummm.. OK Thanks.. I am going to look as something with a 5/8" mounting depth range. Will let you know. Thanks for the info. If I can find something may ping you on how to actually get the factory one out..
