I just think that if there's something like that so visible, yet so easily fixed, that you touch every time you change gear, what's lurking out of sight?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hartech rebuild in 2014 as well, looks like a bargain
A rather cheap Hartech rebuild though at £5k, so maybe not the full monty of Hartech rebuilds.

Is that real!?
Well, it's on autotrader and the dealer's own site. They're a legitimate dealership so it's not a scam. So yep, amazing though it seems, it is real.

Says it has a "great" back story but doesn't say what it is? Featured in EVO magazine, but for what reason?
Haha! Indeed. I doubt it's the best 996 on the market but that is a very keen price for a 911 that's had the Hartech treatment.
That is a cracking deal!
If someone does not buy that quick, my brother probably will.
I have just called him and left voicemail.

If he does go to look at it then I would advise him to dig into the details of the 'Hartech rebuld'. Their 'belt and braces' rebuilds usually come in at £8-£10k, so the amount quoted seems rather cheap and may not be the 'bomb-proof' rebuild they usually do.

Something tells me it'll still be a lot better than most sub-£10k 996's though. Also, bear in mind that the £5k referred to could be for just the engine work at Hartech, whereas the higher prices you're suggesting are usually their bills for a removal and refit/commissioning too, from the ad it sounds like a different garage did that in this case.

Yep, all true. Just though it worth mentioning. It's a shame I'm not in a position to move on one myself just yet, as otherwise I'd be straight up there to take a look!

No longer listed, must have sold quickly or the seller has taken it off line.
Yep, gone from Autotrader too. Either someone grabbed a bargain or the seller has realised what a steal it was and is reconsidering the price!

How much was it up for?
The original advert called it the cheapest 911 in the country. I guess that means they were running it at such a low price because there was either something wrong with it, or they wanted to generate some forum buzz about their business.
I can fully understand why current owners might be cynical about this car, but for someone intending to buy a 996 in the next 4-6 weeks, it presents a bit of a dilemna.
If a Hartech-rebuilt car can be had for less than £7k, I might feel a bit of a mug handing over £10k+ for a similar year manual C2 without the peace of mind that a Hartech rebuild brings.
I know this is a much asked question on car forums but given savings rates of <2% and the possibility that the stockmarket is at a high do cars like this present a genuine investment opportunity? I mean if I bought this and mothballed it for 5 years (oh the sacrilege) could I expect a healthy return? Surely 20% is realistic?

I've argued on GG that a good, early, manual C2 996 could offer 'free motoring'. The engine issues are overplayed, and the early 3.4s are the safest bet (baring a Hartech rebuilt one). Also, the 'challenging' looks of the 996 are probably less of an issue now, as it is no longer the 'ugly' car that followed the 993, but maybe seen as the first iteration of the modern style of 911, as well as being one of the final analogue 911s.
Investment? Probably not. But it could at least offer some 'free' fun.

It can't.
That car - if genuine - was not representative of the price of a Hartech rebuilt car.
I did wonder about what that car would be like close up. The interior looked awful...the gear lever was ripped to shreds and the steering wheel was cracked as hell. I can't believe that anyone with a degree of pride in ownership or mechanical sympathy would drive a car where the two main tactile points of the car were in such bad shape.
I might be wrong, but it just didn't send a good vibe...

I'm not seeking an argument but clearly it is possible to buy a Hartech'd car for less than £7k as this car demonstrates. That it might not be the best example of a used 996 is open for debate, but it was a genuine sale of a fully working, non cat D/C 911.

It had done 150k miles. It was never going to be concourse. Leather interiors rarely stand up well to big mileages.

Not sure what happened. My brother did phone but it was not available. Maybe sold or moved to another trader to hike the price? Who knows?!?

My point was, as there was actually a big flap of leather hanging off the gearknob exposing the plastic underneath, if the car was well cared for wouldn't you swap it for even a s/h one off ebay? I just think that if there's something like that so visible, yet so easily fixed, that you touch every time you change gear, what's lurking out of sight? It just seems to be the equivalent of turning up to an interview with dirty shoes...alarm bells would ring for me.

I must admit that I didn't notice that. I looked at the interior pics and thought it looked ok. I was more 'concerned' (not really the right word, as I was never going to be buying this car) by the really flat paintwork.

Whilst I agree it was perhaps a touch underpriced considering the rebuild, it does depend on the quality of the rest of the car, with the mileage at 150k - I'd say the price wasn't far away from what I'd expect from looking around recently.
I have seen a number of early C2's, some with rebuilds, some not, with less miles and seemingly good condition/hitory for around £10k, maybe a touch less.
A friend of mine had an early C2 in recently, found to have bore score (due to debri). So the engine was sent to Hartech, £7k later it is back and ready to go. Let's say that C2 was worth say £10k, is it now worth £17k? I would say no.
Me personally, if I was looking for a 996, I would be looking for a rebuilt car, but I'd only expect to pay up to £2k over the top for that peace of mind - maybe I'd be looking for a long time, who knows!

Do we know this though?
As far as I can see, it was listed and then disappeared almost as quickly. Did anyone on here actually view it? HPI it?
The listing itself stated it was "the cheapest 911 in the country" i.e. not the average/norm.
Anyway, as I said, it is not representative of a (properly) Hartech rebuilt car.
In the next 6 months, if you can link 3 genuine 996's with Hartech properly rebuilt engines for £7k, I'll give you £50.
Hell, if you can find me 3 for under £10k, I'll give you a biscuit.
(and for clarity, when I say Hartech rebuilt, I mean with the proper preventative measures, otherwise it's just a normal engine rebuild)

Autotrader adverts now show if cars are insurance write offs. This had no marker against it.
