Reported fix

when I changed the TTS tyres from the original Toyo Proxes to GY F1 A2s it improved no end, as did the ride comfort. Same with the BMW - the Bridgestones it came with tried to throw me into every ditch, but switching to Conti SC3s solved the issue immediately.

I was never going to run the GT4 though the winter as a daily so for £20k wanted a fast 4WD car with heated seats and being a turbo went DSG also to stop the lag.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 8Original post

That sounds how I imagined a Boxtaru would sound, its not horrendous and certainly much better than the VAG 2.0 turbo engine I had in an S3 Audi so things could have been worse !

POST 9Original post

God that looks FANTASTIC on the mov..but the sound...devisive...how much fuel is wasted on the burp-fart theatrics?...I like that stuff, but it does sound a bit OTT..trying too hard.. undecided.

Looking at the tailpipe it presumably is the base 718 and from the pops and bangs on the overrun I'd guess has the sports exhaust. Actually sounds much more like the 718S on the configurator - which also has similar pops and bangs, so probably has sports exhaust.

Twinfan said: Compare to the same folk driving a Cayman GTS - there's no comparison! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8zoG7dZmpE A great car the Cayman GTS, I had the privilege of a day in the passenger seat of a CGTS though the Alps last year and it was a very impressive car. The pace, noise and ride are all excellent and the GTS interior with the carbon and red stitching is just a great place to be. In fact one of my favorite cars that I've been in.

Twinfan said: Here's the S: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQqO8DUQTlg That bassy drone is likely to get very tiring on the ears... It really depends how loud it really is - 911Rs exhaust would do my head in if was anything like as loud has his clip sounds. I still think the non-sports exhaust base 718 sounds absolutely fine to me, but the pops and crackles spoil both on the youtube clips. Edited by bcr5784 on Friday 5th February 10:57

POST 24Original post

Those sounds for both the S (and non-S) are truly awful to my ear, what a horrendous bassy racket. The Cayman S clip posted is nail on head - that's how a car like that should sound

POST 27Original post

In my head I have a mental picture of two of it's original six conrods flapping around in smashed up cylinder liners, with the pistons and remains of the valve timing kit flailing round in fresh air, as the engine leaves the last of it's vital fluids in a trail on the ground. Awful. Or perhaps it's an old Land Rover that hasn't seen an MOT station in twenty years, some old 1930's GP car, or an extremely unwell Subaru. Either way, it does not sound like a Porsche. And those stupid farty popping sounds would get right on my tits too. What a shame.

Dr S said: That pops and crackle stuff is typically heard on engines that don't really sound that great. Who needs such contrived stuff on a Mezger? I think it's a simple fact that a lot of people like them - or why else would anyone spec PSE, which is one of the most popular options.

POST 31Original post

I reckon most buyers are blind to the contrived and the fake. But what is real? The distinction continues to blur.

POST 32Original post

My Cayman GTS has the best sound of any car I have owned and that includes a Ferrari 355 with a Capristo and the sports exhaust I had fitted to my GT3 RS

POST 33Original post

anonymous said: [redacted] Agreed - I was flamed for describing PSE as an engineering abortion. But, that said things are getting blurred at the edges. Piping induction noise into the cabin may not be quite as fake as amplifying and filtering that noise and feeding into to cabin via the speaker system - but it's getting close, and I'm sure if you did it well enough you couldn't tell the difference. Porsche have been manufacturing noise for a long time to some degree. Whether it be mechanical, electronic, fuel or by many other ways. I think this is why racing cars give me wood. Its pure. Oh, of course, yes. And of course the truth is that a good racing car is truly horrible to drive. And yet, many racing cars sound incredible. Why is that? Because they are sans compromise.

POST 38Original post

Fartastic. Never thought our beloved Porsche would produce something that takes the German name for it 'auspuff' and somehow manages to make that bit of the car sound like how its name sounds in English. Both models sound worse and more chav than my Megane. Oh well at least if I buy that 987.2 Cayman I keep promising myself it should hold its value for a long time to come.

Even at a slow cruise that flat 4 is making a nice burble and that's just the base car. 991.2 probably better when I am ragging its arse right on my way to a short prison stretch.

If I really wanted something that sounds like a Harley on a coastal road cruise..... I'd buy a Harley..... All comments/thoughts on mid-life crises to be ignored. Besides mid-life was a long time ago......... Mind you if you want a cracking sound you still can't beat a Kawasaki triple, two stroke...... ah yes, it sounds like a six pot four stroke.....(ish)

POST 51Original post

Not a fan of the 718 noise compared to previous Porsche 6 cyl offerings, but it sounds okay for a F4. I love PSE on my BGTS. Is it over the top with its pops and bangs? Yes, but it's fun and it makes me smile And I defy anyone to drive through the Alps in one and not enjoy the sound, it's a life affirming experience and I couldn't care less if it's a bit contrived. And you can still get the non-exhaust sounds at low revs by switching off PSE. At high revs when the valves open whatever, you can still get the mechanical and induction noise, it's just the balance is biased towards exhaust. Would be nice to have an option to have the PSE off off so tha they were closed at high revs just for the added variety. Anyway, my 993 has a more cultured and toned down sound if I want it (even with the OEM motorsound airbox and a Carnewal exhaust), so I guess I'm lucky to have the best of both worlds.

Went to geneva to have a look at 718 (which i have ordered) demo models due in dealers in next 2 or 3 weeks.the Design when seen in the flesh, looks terrific.much more aggresive front end and the new led headlights are excellent. Also the new back end spoiler/ badge is a nice design touch with the letters sloping in underneath the bottom of spoiler. In all a much more modern and muscular look to it.The dashboard as well with the new vents and chrono clock position look very nice.Pse will not be on uk cars until after july, and aftermarket pse is not coming until november. If you look on german configurator you cam see new wheels and other items which will be coming here in next couple of months.First journo drives are in majorca in mid april at official launch.sure this car is a leap forwrd in all areas.looked at Ftypes, Aston vantage recently but going to wait till august and get 718s with sports exhaust.Cant think of anything in this class or price range that will get anywhere close.

I ordered a boxster spyder last August but was not high enough up the waiting list to be allocated a car. So where do you go from there.when told this news in January the 718 details were already out by then.In true Porsche fashion even now with 718 deliveries starting in June for the early cars, year old boxster gts etc are the same money as ordering new 718. so, bit of a quandry..Can see the point on wait and test drive,on pure speed terms pdk's boxster s with launch control is as fast as gt4. £65,000 on new 718 or £62000 on 981 gts? Hhmmm. Makes £20,000 overs on a spyder seem hard to swallow. In regards to the sound question,a difficult one,so many opinions but nobody on this forum has heard it for real yet.

Leave it till Autumn and buy a GTS (assuming you are after a cab) as prices show the seasonal dip. As the last of the na cars if you buy the right spec they will hold up well as not many about.....a good package at the money.

Top Gear says its around 50kg heavier model for model over the old one. That's a lot of plumbing!

It does appear that Porsche have made the 718 sports exhaust (maybe the normal one too) deliberately loud. The turbo Carrera S I drove was also similarly noisy (and my only real criticism of that engine). Personally I only really want to hear the exhaust when accelerating briskly or blipping the throttle on a downchange, I don't want it droning away on the motorway, or marking me out as a boy racer when I'm going down to the shops.

When I bought my TTS the steering WAS shocking. When I bought my E46 330ci ten years ago the steering WAS shocking. But... when I changed the TTS tyres from the original Toyo Proxes to GY F1 A2s it improved no end, as did the ride comfort. Same with the BMW - the Bridgestones it came with tried to throw me into every ditch, but switching to Conti SC3s solved the issue immediately. I wonder how much of "poor ride" or "poor steering" is down to the manufacturer's choice of whatever tyre happens to be around at the time? When you borrowed the Boxster, did you take note of what tyres it was wearing? P Zeros do seem to be prevalent, and... crap! My fronts went back to Pirelli as they were cracking up in the treads at 50% wear (19k miles) and they kindly sent me a cheque for the full price of the Goodyear replacements, £298. Great customer service, but rubbish tyres. It's odd you dislike the 981 so much as all the reviews mention the steering, saying it's not quite as direct, but still say it's a great car. You must really love your 987 and being an R would make it an unfair comparison to a base 981. Have you compared it to the GT4? Was the 987R ever a winner of ECOTY? My TTS was a DD, and the 981 is too. I think there are many other reasons to prefer the 981 to the 987 as a daily. That's why I didn't buy a 987. Mainly due to the "old" interior and that, at 6' 1" I didn't really fit in it comfortably. Buying an R suggests a more performance oriented attitude which would lean toward having to have prefect steering feel, whereas I'm perhaps older and mostly like to cruise around, with my PASM and comfy 14 way seats? ;-)

Can the Porsche badge justify a little four pot costing over £60k with a few options? A 4* car with 5* pricing. I wonder whether they thought that by pricing it higher than the last one that they could steer their customers into thinking, "it costs more so it must be a lot better"? And I also wonder if they couldn't face reducing the price of the forthcoming 718 Cayman in order to place it below the rag top, so ended up raising the price of the boxster much more than they normally would when introducing the replacement model. They seem to have scored a few home goals this time!

I was never going to run the GT4 though the winter as a daily so for £20k wanted a fast 4WD car with heated seats and being a turbo went DSG also to stop the lag. It was nothing to me, just a s tter and I never washed it once. I act like TT's it's my 3rd one and they make great a daily imo will prob get the mk3 TTRS

Do you take the 987R or the GT4? My TTS was also DSG. Still noticed the lag. I guess it was an OK DD but I wanted to get back to combining DD and fun car into one. The 981 ticks all the boxes for me here. Another turbo car would be OK for a DD, but no fun based on the TTS experience. 4WD was also partly to blame there. Not right on a "sporty" car.

It's nicely weighted and very responsive. You don't get the feedback of the 987.2 though. Some people will prefer the 981 steering though as it irons out the bumps more and won't writhe in your hand as much as the 987.2. I love the steering on mine, but the 981 setup wouldn't put me off buying one. A four pot turbo, now that's an entirely different thread Me too. 981 steering could be improved, and it's a world away from the steering on my old 7GT3, but having test driven a box and Cayman before ordering my BGTS, I decided it wasn't the end of the world given the rest of the package on offer. 4 pot turbo on the other hand is likely a complete deal breaker for me for a 718. Although I will reserve final judgment until I try one. Not looking good though considering I wasn't enamoured with the 991.2's 6 pot turbo

I doubt it's a coincidence.

POST 77Original post

Hmmm, that doesn't fit with my experience. I got out of the 991.2 S with PSE and drove straight home in my 981 BGTS with PSE, the latter sounded like satan gargling compared to the muted noise from the 911 inside the cabin. I get the feeling that the 991.2 and 718 sound a lot louder from the outside than from the inside. I think that the the turbo lumps are also a bit louder at low revs, but not at high revs

POST 78Original post

Just to complete the info. Both the 991s I drove were cabs with PSE - and I'm referring to the noise with the roof UP and PSE OFF. PSE on the 991.2 seemed to make surprisingly little difference, but I only put it on briefly. My 981S doesn't have PSE.

Edited by DJMC on Thursday 7th April 11:59 I don't think anyone would argue that the 981 is a better performer than the 987, but it lost much of the feel and "go kart-yness" of the 987, and that makes the 987 more fun for me to drive, slower or not. You can't remove the mechanical connections between the steering wheel and wheels and expect it to have the same feel. Interestingly, the 718 seems to be taking an even larger step in that direction by killing it in the performance department at the expense of fun. Ultimately, I just think it's a kick for some of us 987 drivers to so many 981 drivers complaining about the 718, when many of us have been saying the same about the 981, albeit to a lesser degree.

You're correct. I had no idea how it works, and I should have read about it first before making assumptions based on the feel. Now I understand that it's the electrical assist motor that robs the feel, but there is still a rack and pinion connection. Thanks. I guess we'll have true drive-by-wire steering to look forward to in the future.

I don't think it's fair to say that 987-981 is similar to 981-718. I prefer the 987 to the 981, but the differences are tiny compared to the change involved in taking away the F6 and chucking in a F4t.
