I am thinking of replacing the ASK amplifier with JL Audio XD300/1 in the hope to clean up and define the base. Does anyone know what kind of plug I will need to interface with the plug left open when the ASK amplifier is removed? I am trying keep the wiring loom untouched.
The
next
thing I would like to try is to replace the tweeters with after market tweeters with the same impedence but I have no idea what the impedence is. Does anyone know what that may be?
I have the Sound Plus System (CRD24 +ASK amp and 9 speakers).
Thanks.

Here is how the sound package plus works:
The head unit outputs 4 channels. The front channels power the 100-mm L&R mid-ranges, located in the doors, and the 3/4" L&R tweeters, located in the dashboard. The mids and tweeters are wired in parallel. The rear channels power the 100-mm L&R full-range speakers, located in the trim pieces around the strut towers.
The ASK amplifier takes speaker-level inputs from all 4 head unit channels, and outputs 1 channel each to the 200-mm L&R door-mounted woofers, and 2 channels (bridged) to the 2-1/2" dashboard-mounted center speaker. High-pass filters are attached to each speaker basket (except for the woofers-I "think" the ASK amp "likely" contains the low-pass filters for them.)
If you search the "Files" tab at the top of the page on this website, you'll find the wiring schematics. If you proceed with your plan, you will lose the output to the center dash speaker.
AFAIK, nobody makes a "plug & play" solution for this swap. I asked Loi, at Euromotorspeed, since he makes an amp replacement harness for the Bose system. No luck with the ASK amp. I attempted to make one, by de-soldering the male connector from the PC board of my ASK amp. Eventally, I abandoned this plan and simply spliced into the factory wiring harness.
I believe the tweeters and mids are each 8-ohms, but since they're wired in parallel, their net resistance is 4-ohms/channel.
I hope this helps your decision.
Thank you Croc'ed. Appreciate the quick reply.
If you wait about a month there will be a direct factory replacement the you can plug in.
Ask me how I know?
This is the project then
Spill the beans Justinfranke78....
How and what do you know?
Check his other threads
Custom subwoofer enclosure. I like that, but I have a
Boxster
so I can't really put something in the rear
So, getting back to the ASK replacement... was looking into this for my '05
Boxster
. I don't mind the
CDR24
(that much), and I have the CD changer with the sound plus package.
My main issue is everything starts to rattle with bass. I'd guess the woofers in the doors, mostly.
Replacing the amp + the woofers in the doors seems like the easiest option. And cheapest, which helps as I also have 100km maintenance, a new aircon diffusor, and new tires coming up
Did anyone do this simple upgrade? Does it help? Is it a big issue to loose the centre dash speaker? Oh, and -- is there enough power on the existing leads to power a somewhat more capable amp?
To answer my own questions... someone might find it helpful
- Replaced the ASK with an Alpina class D amp. It has to be class D, because of the size/efficiency. I first burnt through two Focal class A/B amps which sounded better, but overheated in the confined space! The amps are slightly larger but with a cut-out from where normally the tow hook etc are, it fit nicely. (Now where do I leave my tow hook?
)
- The speakers were shot. Must be the punishing summer heat of Dubai. The woofers and mids came apart at the seams. That, plus the crappy amp, caused the terrible sound. Replaced the woofers with full range (3-in-1) that fit in the place of the woofers.
Net result: sound is much, much better. It's not stellar and I could, in theory, use more bass, but for about $500, this is a great upgrade.
Can you go into a little more detail on the amp and instal such as the plugs and everything? My ask amp is almost dead and I want a new one. Thanks!
Are you guys sure that the
CDR24
head unit has a built in amplifier?
I have a
997.2
with PCM3 and sound package plus, i.e analog amp and 9 speakers similar to 987.
When I removed the PCM3 I found a sticker on it that stated: "can not connect any speakers directly". This leads me to believe that PCM3 has no built in amp at all and speaker outputs function as some sort of low level outputs.
Anyone have any knowledge on this?
Thanks.
