So my 2010 CSs battery is completely dead.
Dealer wants to charge $500 for battery change + reprogramming according to them?
I have all sorts of warnings on my dash... PSM, drive assist, etc.
Is it advisable to just get it from the dealer or can I replace it with any other same voltage battery?
Will it need a ECU reset? Reprogramming? Or it just needs a new fresh battery and the warnings will go away?
I also have a softronic tune on my CS. Will it be affected by the new battery or by the reprogramming by the dealer?
Thanks.
I installed an Interstate battery for about $150, no programming was necessary. Do you have stores like Sears, Walmart or Costco in Bahrain?
A new battery won't affect your Softronic Flash, you can always put your car on a battery tender before you replace it. My engine builder has had me reset my system by unplugging the battery and leaving it over night without power and hook it up the next morning without any problems.
No we actually don't.
What are the battery specs? I'll try to look around.
I had an independent shop replace mine, I'm not sure of the specs.
I suspect any auto parts store will have a cross-reference chart/book. Batteries use standard model/group numbers so it is easy to find an aftermarket one that is compatible.
There are several batteries that fit these cars. I think 94R is one of the more popular. There are many threads dealing with successful swaps. The battery holder is slightly adjustable - some of us have used a lightly larger battery.
One thing - be sure the new battery has a vent tube connector. Many have two - on opposite sides. You use the one close to the Porsche vent hose and plug the unused one. The venting prevents build-up of explosive gases and any possible overflow of electrolite if the battery overheats.
Whatever you do don't put another Porsche battery back in the car. They're junk. The battery died on my first 987. The dealership sold me an aftermarket battery because they didn't trust the Porsche battery. And they didn't charge me $500!!!!
Any idea if my softronic tune will be affected by the battery change?
Your Softronic software is flashed into non-volatile memory - the same as the stock firmware was. So loss of power will not affect it. At least, no more than it would with stock firmware. Some data might be lost, but that is volitate anyway and the ECU will quickly re-learn. The ECU will retain all the important data - error codes & logging history, performance data - maybe more. I'm not intimately familiar with it.
However your concern is unwarranted. If there actually were a danger of damage due to power loss (drained or disconnected battery) then we'd all be in trouble. Disconnecting the battery is standard safety procedure for many maintenance and repair tasks.
However, as someone mentioned, you could also use a battery maintainer/charger (plugged-in to the cig lighter) to provide enough power to retain all the memory settings while the battery is disconnected. If you do this, it is necessary to be extra careful while swapping the batteries. Make sure tat the red connector does not make contact with any metal while it is loose.
