(never had to use it, as this is my daily driver, and hasn't had problems even gone on vacation for 2 weeks), and the cheaper one is used almost continuously in my wife's 993 which doesn't get driven as much -- works great.

Suggestion
There is plenty of room to run the cord without damaging it between the front door glass.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've been using it for 2 years to keep a Lexus SC430 and ES300 charged and it has worked like a charm.
Hi,
Going on a trip for 2 ½ weeks, what would you say, do I need to put her on a battery maintainer for the time, or will she just start fine?
If so, which one would you recommend?
Thanks!
There are several threads on this issue with varying opinions (you might want to do a search). Some people have found their battery dead after a week while others have gone much longer.
Porsche
sells a battery maintainer and well as one of the vendors here ... see
http://www.planet-9.com/showthread.php?t=8988&highlight=battery+maintainer
If you garage your car & keep it unlock like me, likely you will have no problems. But if you lock it, you will need a maintainer, I use the Porsche
OEM unit that you plug directly into the cig socket. Part#95504490054
Price: $119.95 at Suncoast. Likely your local dealer can match that.

Best deal I've found yet for a battery maintainer is at Wal-Mart of all places. They've got a brilliant little black and decker, includes cig-light and direct battery terminal attachments, for the whopping price of.. $20. Works a treat!
Here is all you need --available at not-so-fine retail stores everywhere

Before you buy such a thing for your Cayman, I suggest you read the [poor] reviews
here
and then make a judgement.
There are also differences between the CTEK/Porsche unit and this one such as this has about half the power (meaning almost twice as long to get to a full charge) and this is 2 stage vice 4 stage.
For $50 you can't beat the one that Ralph sells at Boothe Design, see:
http://www.planet-9.com/showthread.php?t=8988&highlight=battery+maintainer
or just pick up the phone and give him a call. It really works, doesn't get hot like the B&D one, goes into float mode unlike the B&D one. I mean if people want to save $30 but ruin their $300 battery I guess that it their choice but I don't see the logic in it.
i bought a
battery tender
from oakland
porsche
normally $90, but they gave it to me for $63 since I bought my car from them
the cable on this tender is flat and of very small gauge so you can close your car door on the cable and not worry about damage or harm
i viewed the blog above on black and decker
the b&d model's cable is very thick
i viewed the boothe design too
i like the one i bought from
porsche
better
i have space problems though in my garage
one reason for my preferance
the one i got from
porsche
has an extremely long length of cable so your outlet can be very far away
Yes, the Porsche one has a long flat cable. You can easily close the door and run the cord. I bought it before buying the car and before the Boothe one was out. The Porsche (CTEK) one puts out more power but I would have bought the Boothe one if I had known about it ... a much better deal
The B&D "says" it goes into float mode but given all of the problems with the unit is it worth $30 to risk it not going into float mode and overheating as it has for so many people who have posted reviews? What's the phrase penny-wise and pound foolish or something like that...
My dealer has a whole lot of cars with them but I don't know the brand. They must work well (of course the sun is pretty reliable here). And the car would have to be parked outside...
Thanks all for your feedback.
I wanted to get the one from Ralph Boothe. Emailed him Monday, never received an answer, so I ordered the
Porsche
Dual-Mode from
Suncoast
.
Btw, I ordered quite some stuff from
Suncoast
already and Ric over there has always been great to deal with.
I have only just stumbled on this thread, and since no one has posted in a while I thought I would add my own bit.
I have to Harleys on "battery tenders", both are "Harley Davidson", but I am sure it's just a label. Recently, after having had the
Cayman
go dead while it was at the detailer (for several weeks due to SNOW!!!) I ordered a couple of these:
Car Battery Charger Auto Battery Minder Charger $39.90
The model CM1A looks suspiciously like one of the Harley models. I've had the Cayman on one for several weeks now and it seems quite happy. It's nice that the lead that you put on the battery permanently has a cap for the connectors. Most do now anyway.
An aside... Does anyone NOT have trouble getting the battery cover back on? It's like it just doesn't fit exactly right.
Anyway, I hope this helps someone.
Sears has a $29.99 unit made by schumacher that has the float charge control and flat wire. 3 year warranty, etc see link
DieHard Battery Charger/Maintainer - Model 71219 at Sears.com
****** I guess this is matter of opinion but....My 07 CS sat outside in 30/40 degree weather, locked & covered for 10 days. It started with no problem.
I have both of the
Porsche
models (dang over-achiever...) I keep the dual mode in the
Cayman
(never had to use it, as this is my daily driver, and hasn't had problems even gone on vacation for 2 weeks), and the cheaper one is used almost continuously in my wife's 993 which doesn't get driven as much -- works great.
For those who use the maintainers, how do you run the cord? Do you just close the door on it? Do you leave the window cracked? My
Boxster
will not be driven this winter, probably 4-5 months. I will certainly need to maintain the battery over that length of time.

See my gallery for photos of the cord running by the front of the door. There is plenty of room to run the cord without damaging it between the front door glass.
The one inside the center console is my preference mainly because I have a bracket on the ceiling for the charger which is plugged into the same outlet as the garage door opener and "fits" better. I use the maintainer all the time since this is one of several cars I use and I never know when the
next
drive is.
I use a 2 station Deltran charger. I just got the cigarette lighter adapter for it to use with the
Boxster
. Since the 12v socket is live all the time it seemed easier than going under the hood.
I've been using it for 2 years to keep a Lexus SC430 and ES300 charged and it has worked like a charm.
It's a no brainer, a great investment
