Third option is to dump the entire BOSE system, and replace with aftermarket headunit, amp and speakers.
Leading evidence: 'Replace with aftermarket headunit, amp and speakers' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace with aftermarket headunit, amp and speakers' (1 discussions). The rest is just running RCA cables to go from the new head unit to the aftermarket amp and whatnot to connect everything up.

Suggestion
What you can't reuse is the main factory amp if you remove the CDR24/PCM headunits since fiber optic is used between the 2.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello to everyone , i just had a very general question im sure been discussed before, i bought my 2006 Cayman S today, comes with Bose speakers, however i am very dissapointed with the radio and the lack of anything else in it. So am on a mission to upgrade it to my liking. I want something that could provide me with:
touch screen / dvd /ipod integ/ NAVIgation/ bluetooth/ and maybe xm radio but not a must have unless you think so.
If i can get a list of ones that work with 06 cayman S , maybe some higher end ones and then lower ends where u can install yourself if possible, also if you reccomend i buy seperate devices to satisfy these needs please list them as well. I have not decided on how much I would like to spend yet, could be anywhere from 400 to 1000, maybe a lil more, i love my car but i do need todays necessities to function in it , any tips will be appreciated thanks.
i m sure someone will say use the search button. But basically, we are stuck with BOSE. BOSE system use digital fiber optics. Currently, there is no aftermarket headunit that can directly interface with it. And you can't really reuse BOSE speakers either without rewiring.
Retrofit OEM nav system will set you back at least $2000.
There are two ways to connect ipod or aux device: (1) get a Obridge or DICE Gateway 500 (about $500), or (2) wired or wireless FM modulators ($50-$150). Third option is to dump the entire BOSE system, and replace with aftermarket headunit, amp and speakers.
ok well i done alot of research reading over the forums and such, except the more i read the more confused i get jumping from one topic to another, what i know now is i have a bose sound system, will this make it more difficult to DIY, i seen one guy want to install the pioneer in his dash and shop quoted him for 150$ assuming he bought the screen from them. i can afford to pay 150 but dont wana go to a shop, hand them my own screen, and have em charge me 500$+ . on top of that there seem to be so many systems out there i have not yet been able to narrow it down. Alls i want is ipod integration mainly, navi would be nice but i can always buy it seperate, maybe bluetooth if its not too much, dvd player but not required, and thats it
. can i get some recommendations please something for around $500-900$.
i read that id have to stuff the subwoofer to get good sound quality on my 06 cayman cuz of the bose speakers is this true ?
I would check with Eric at BumperPlugs about getting a Dension 500 gateway unit and possibly the extra BlueTooth unit that goes with/integrates with it. There are install articles in our ARTICLES section and Eric can provide you with support if you purchase through him. I think he is running a sale right now too...
Stuff the subwoofer as above and get the Canada Safe Drive FM transmitter and your in business. To my ear it sounds as good as a CD in the Bose player when you're driving down the road. Total cost will be about $60, so if you are not satisfied you don't lose much.
This is incorrect. You can reuse all of the Bose speakers in the car. What you can't reuse is the main factory amp if you remove the CDR24/PCM headunits since fiber optic is used between the 2. So if you want a new head unit, you can get a nav touch screen one from $550-$1500+ (depending on exactly your preference), plus the following -
-an aftermarket amp, 5 channels if you want to wire up the sub in the passenger footwell to bypass the sub's factory amp. 4 channels if you are going to reuse the factory amp by feeding rear amplified signals to it. Some have also used the amplified outputs in the head unit and not bought a new amp, but you wont get the best results this way IMO.
-a kit with a double-din bracket, harness to connect to the factory harness and bezel
you can tap into the existing speaker wires using wire taps, except for the tweeters and the main sub in the footwell.
The rest is just running RCA cables to go from the new head unit to the aftermarket amp and whatnot to connect everything up.
Budget - $1500+ if you do it yourself, $2000-$3000+ if you pay someone to do it, depending on where you go
Yes to stuffing BOSE sub. I did that, and it sounds an order of magnitude better. Only cost me $3 and 20min time. Since I don't have PCM, many features on Gateway 500 aren't available to me. Therefore I find getting Gateway 500 unit is overkill and a waste. If you want best sound quality, go Gateway 500 route. I plan to use a Wired FM modulator.
Personally I m considering Scosche IPFMRDS (~$120-170). It's a wired FM modulator with auto switching between ipod and FM radio. Basically when it detects ipod is connected, it disconnects FM antenna to avoid interference. It also charges ipod and displays text via RDS.

a point to add - i've retrofitted the PCM 2.0 into my car and took out the ugly CDR24.
a nice feature which I only found out about later - was the fact you can adjust the 'Listening Position' in one of the submenus in the PCM (this wasn't available in the BOSE CDR24)- this improves the soundstage tremendously (of course to the detriment of the other passenger which is have a offcentre sound but my wife's not that picky)
