Boxster
w/ CDR30
Today I stopped by my installer to pull the CDR30 to check the wiring. Our concerns about optical outputs were unfounded. The wiring of the head unit appears to be straight forward and simple. An aftermarket headunit should interface with the onboard amp.
We are now thinking of replacing the CDR30 with a
Kenwood
all in 1 DNX6140: AM/Fm, DVD, Nav, Blue Tooth, XM, USB & Ipod inputs.
I am not thrilled with pulling $1600 worth of equipmnet, but I don't like the user interface of the CDR30. navigation of mp3 discs is awkward at best, controls are counter-intuitive, and phone book is a pain to load #s.
Also thinking of adding a backup camera.
They will also hardwire the passport to bypass any intrernal test circuits. You may recall I encountered a problem with the passport. When the key was inserted the passport would give me the message " low voltage / shutting down ", if I then turned it on manually it would fire right up. The conclusion we came to was that when you insert the key the system uses a low voltage signal to check for system integrity. Wasted 3 hours tyring to get it working.
Hey, that looks like my car!
Haveyou checked your garage lately?

Keep us posted on the new install...I'm sure there are many of us interested in the trials and tribulations you are going to experience.
Yes please consider authoring an article for our Articles section on how to do this complete with pics if your shop doesn't mind you shooting over their shoulders, etc.
I went the
Kenwood
route in my Toyota P/u. I bought the Dnx 5120, backup camera, Sat Radio, I pod interface, bluetooth, DVD, and the steering wheel interface.
I really like the user interface, and the GPS boots fairly quickly, compared to the
Pioneer
. BUT, I have replaced everything (Sat rad, camera, bluetooth, and main DNX unit), one at a time, under warranty since March of this year. Maybe I had a bad batch of equipment, but I got to know the service department on a first name basis.
If you do go the
Kenwood
route, buy the extended warranty.
Thanks for the tip.
I also started thinking of a backup camera and a Sony Handycam (They make one in Red) to be connected to the video inputs.
