So I finally pulled the
plug
and I'm going to install the following in my
2008 Cayman S
-
Clarion NX409 Head Unit
Boston Acoustics GT-50 5-Channel Amplifier
JL Audio XR653-CSxo 3 way crossovers
Sirius
Treullionaire's double-din kit
I chose the Clarion since it had all the features I wanted for $563 from
Amazon
, an amazing deal IMO. I also bought the bluetooth module for an extra $73.
I have a couple of questions I was hoping you experts out there could help me with -
Does anyone know what the impedance of the Bose subwoofer is?
I took it out but of course it doesn't say on it.
My concern is my amp specifically says not to drive a sub on the 5th channel less than 2 ohms.
I also plan on taking the tweeters out to wire them directly to the crossover instead of having them connected to the door mids. I would like to leave the 4.7uF capacitor that is on there from the factory.
Does anyone think leaving the caps on in addition to my external crossover will make it sound bad?
It may end up cutting off whatever my JL crossover sends it, but I can't imagine it would be noticable.
My other concern is exactly how I am going to get the cabling through the firewalls (from trunk to battery compartment, and from battery compartment to inside). I've seen the instructions out there, but I have yet to see a whole to push cables through.
I plan to document everything I learn to share as well so its in 1 place.
from my research, the
Bose Sub
should be driven by speaker level inputs at 2 ohms.
isp79,
Thank you for your purchase! Here's a write-up we did:

Passing through the firewall is on page 4 0f 14 of DIY.
Trieullionaire
Thanks debmwb. Are you referring to the speaker level connection to the factory
Bose subwoofer
amp?
My current plan is to not use the secondary factory amp in the
bose sub
enclosure. I am going to bypass this amp and directly connect to the
bose sub
with the 5th channel of my aftermarket amp. My concern was that the amp I have specifically says the sub on the 5th channel shouldn't be lower than 2 ohms.
Install done! I'm exhausted. 10 hours of work with me and my friend.
The Clarion unit is great so far.
Nav/
iPhone
/CD/FM/
Sirius
(need to register my new ID) all work great.
I have a slight
alternator
whine when the car is in motion that I need to debug, but other than that its all good.
Thanks for all of the info on the board.
I'll post pictures in the next few days.

Did you fix the whine? I installed my Pioneer and have a similar issue!
I haven't tried yet, its going to be a few weeks until I can get to it.
I only hear it when the lights are on since the
alternator
is charging at that point.
But what I intend to try first is the following -
I hooked up all of the head unit/related modules connected to it (bluetooth module, bypass, head unit, etc.) to the Porsche harness' ground.
My guess is that this ground is not as good as the ground that the amplifier is connected to (the car's chassis at the front of the car).
If this is the case, what might work is disconnecting the Porsche harness ground (or even keeping it connected) and running a ground wire from a bolt on the car's chassis into the cabin and connecting it to the head unit ground connection.
If you try this and it works, let me know.
Otherwise, I'll have to try to isolate where the noise is being introduced by removing things from the system 1 at a time and seeing what makes a difference.
I'm going to be on the hunt for this tomorrow evening....I'll post back!
Well...no luck. I ran a separate ground to my head unit about 1 ft away and the whine isn't gone. As a matter of fact, I hear more than the
alternator
in the system...I hear the fans kick on, whir, and kick off too.
I'm going to try the PAC signal isolators this evening and see if everything quiets down.
Doug
okay...I fixed my whine.
The isolators were not the problem, and the grounds were not the problem.
Somewhere in my car there is an issue with the front
Bose
door / dash speaker setup. When I disconnected them from the amp, ALL NOISE IS GONE!!!!
So I am now just running my 6 1/2 Focals in the doors (replacing the
Bose
), the
Bose
4's in the back, and the
Bose Subwoofer
.
:banana::banana::banana:
Good job!
Unfortunately if my issue is similar I don't gave focals for the doors so I'll have to dig in more. I'll post back in a few weeks when I can take a look at it
