I just replaced my PZero's with Conti SportContact2's and they are great.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 2001 996 with the optional Turbo twist 18" wheels. The rear tires are 265's but the metal lip extends from the rubber by a little bit. I live in New York City so every time I hit a pothole, I scrpe the edge of a rim. Can I get away with 285's so that there is more of a wall for rim protection? Will this cause any performance problems?

POST 2Original post

Yes, you can easily mount 285's on your rear 10" wheel but expect very little rim protection. Better than none, I guess.

POST 3Original post

I just mounted 285x30 Bridgestone S03's on 10" wide rims on the rear of my '99 996 with no clearance problems at all. But I think the design of the particular brand of tire that you have, rather than the size, is going to have more to do with whether the sidewall of the tire extends past the lip of the rim or not. The Bridgstone 285's have a nice little protective bead on the sidewall, but it is about the same size as the one on the 265 Continentals I replaced and sticks out about as far. By contrast the Michelin Sports on my wife's SLK have a much smaller bead that is almost even with the edge of the wheel. In any event, as Viken pointed out in his post you're not going to get much protection anyway. Besides, with a 285 tire you have to drop down to a 30 series from a 35 which will provide even less overall cushioning for your wheels. Better to try and avoid those potholes. Mike

POST 4Original post

Contis and Bridgestone 265s with rim protector beads/sidewalls extend exactly 1/4" beyond the rim. You must have PZeros their sidewall slope inward from the rim - the RIM extends 1/8 " farther than those tires. That's why the former tires look wider from the rear than the P Zeros.

POST 5Original post

I just put 285 30ZR 18's on the rear of my 01 C4 and they clear fine with the new 2002 wheels. I just replaced my PZero's with Conti SportContact2's and they are great. I have seen 285's on the Turbo look wheels also. FDR

POST 6Original post

Look at the Toyo T1-S, they have a slightly taller sidewall as they are a 285/35. Might help prevent damage to your rims. Greg

Thank you. I appreciate your help.

245x35 18 Front 285x30 18 Rear No problems, even with a lowered car! And with some camber added in....

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks to everyone for your help. It is greatly appreciated.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Will putting the 285/30's mess up my speedometer because of the difference in height?

POST 11Original post

You currently have 265/35 right?? So 285/30 is the natural upsizing generally speaking. One point - I thought that on your 996, if it came with 265 at the rear, it usually also meant a 7.5 width wheel in the front. Adding 285 at the rear without increasing wheel width upfront might cause more understeer - of course these cars have some understeer dialed in but I am talking about adding to it. Anyway, just throwing it out there for the more knowledgeable to comment on. Basically I am not sure. Other general ideas for rim scratch avoidance (all ideas come with pros and cons!!) - keeping tyres well inflated, certain brands like SO2 are wider in my experience for the same size than others. Michelins seem to have more sidewall but tend to run narrower for the same size. SO2 has a rim protector sort of feature. As for performance I like the Pirelli Asims all around for all-round performance. Have not seen the new Contis but the old ones did not protect much.
