I am very excited with my "new system". I had an
Ipod
connected to my car but the sound quality isn't so good so I have made a cheap improvement with sound quality 3X times better then
Ipod
.
I bought this low power consumption HDD with 4800 rpm:
-
Samsung
S1 mini 120 GB (you can have the 160GB also and choose your color:banana
It must be a low power HDD to work out and FAT32 formated.
-I got the application "touchcopy" (there are plenty of them you can choose) to extract all my
ipod
musics and organize all my collection by folders: Artist -> Album -> [track nº] [title].mp3/mp4/wma
- Then organized everything with "Mp3tag" (freeware), put every music you have with ID3v2.3 and ID3v1. This is the part that takes some time, be sure your songs are well organized and tagged (some files you download or rip have different versions of ID3 tags) and if you get new songs or change the name of an artist or album, change also the folder.
- Finally connect the drive to your car, it will take about 8-10 minutes to get the music data, during that, because you organized your musics in folders, you can search by folder clicking on the DISC menu "TRACK list" (or just wait to load the data). After the first time it collects the information from the HDD, YOU WILL NOT NEED TO WAIT AGAIN, IT WILL WORK JUST LIKE AN
IPOD
but with much better sound quality, even if you remove the disk the
PCM
will NOT NEED TO SEARCH FOR A DATABASE. If you want your
PCM
to update new musics and ID3 tag changes, change on your computer the name of the drive and he will build a database again, so no worries!
P.S. because it is a FAT32 system, it is highly recommended that you defrag your disk when you change tags add new songs!
Keep in mind that the limit is 10000 tracks through the USB port, so a 160GB (or even a 120GB) drive may not be necessary.
I guess you lose the ability to have playlists though?
That's correct.
To make a pseudo-playlist, you need to create a playlist folder and put tracks into it.
Yep. Plus, at 160gb, you'd be scrolling forever just to find music. I have a little 16gb usb stick that cost like 40 bucks from newegg, which is more than enough.
Plus, even a laptop hdd would be too big to fit in that little center console. Do you just have it hanging out on the side? Unless you've got a solid state HDD, which defeats the purpose because then you'd be wasting a couple hundred dollars, again, because of the folder & file limits.
