Only other thing I can think of would be that they actually have 1 2 3 and 4 working and have the cable adjusted so far out of range its not able to select the 5 and 6 fork.
Leading evidence: 'operating sleeve around gears 3 and 4' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'operating sleeve around gears 3 and 4' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust so far out of range its not able' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Certainly not inside the transmission - its a big deal to open it up and take it apart you dont just replace a few parts & button it back up to see if it works.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
Relevant background: I have a 2000 996 Carrera 4 6spd with 49,500 miles. I am the second owner and have had the car for two years. It's up to date on service, including the factory 60k mile service. Most recently service included an oil change 400 miles ago. Transmission fluid was last renewed 5,000 miles ago.
Current issue: on a drive Saturday evening, I lost the ability to put the car in gear while moving. I shifted from 2nd to 3rd and, after a quick grind, I couldn't get the car in gear (any gear). I called for a flatbed and the car is now in the shop. The shifter was sloppy and could move from third to fourth freely (but not engage) but wouldn't move into any other gears. I was hoping it was just the shifter cables, but this afternoon the service adviser email me and said: "Still working on it, not sure if its an issue in the transmission as well. We found the cables were stretched, so we started with those. After that, weve been making adjustments trying to get it right, but its not wanting to fully cooperate. I dont have a lot of details yet, but Ill give you a call once I know more."
Does anyone have any insight into what might be going on? Thank you.
Its always the cable connections at the trans or at the shifter My guess is they have not looked at it yet and he is talking out his *** so they can charge u for parts u dont need and few hours of labor for a 15 minute fix.
I have been using this shop for years and they have never tried to upsell me (when they have had the chance, frankly). Since they started with the cables I am worried it may be more than a connector issue, but I just don't know
It could also be the clutch or slave cylinder. Can you easily get the car into gear with the engine off? And/or if its in gear, does the car creep forward at all? Those symptoms would all point to a situation where the clutch is not completely disengaged for some reason or another.
Thanks for the reply. Nope - the situation with the shifter doesn't change regardless of engine on or off. Clutch has given me no issues so far that I am aware of.
To be clear, whether on or off, I could only move to 3-4 (clutch engaged or not). R, 1-2, and 5-6 I cannot move to.
I've been told they've tried everything with the shifter and can't get the car in 3rd or 4th gear. They think it's the transmission. I'm shocked.
Under 50k miles and a lifetime of service. How could this be??
Our manual transmissions are well built and almost bullet proof. Have them send you a picture of the cable attachments on the transmission. Sounds like the cable ball joints that attach to the transmission have come off. This is a well known problem. You put them back on and zip tie them to the levers. It might be as simple as that.
There are two shift cables operating two levers on the gearbox. One cable + lever acts as the front/back actuator, the other does the right-to-left stuff. It sounds to me like your right-to-left stuff isn't working and therefore you are stuck with only two front/back gears. That certainly could be caused by the shift lever mechanism, the cable, or misadjustment of those items. I have to believe it could also be due to something internal to the gearbox.
To be clear you have the following symptoms
shifter moves forward and back but does not engage a gear. So if you started the car engaged the clutch moved it forward and released the clutch nothing would happen.
Shifter will not move left or right If this is the case then that lever on the transmission is seized.
If this is true then I think its internal.
This all sounds right. Can you tell me what you mean by "its internal"? To the gearbox?
You also wouldn't need to engage the clutch to move it to 3rd or 4th. It just moved freely.
The car can now go in every gear but 3-4.

The shop has replaced some components and can now get the car into R, 1-2, and 5-6, but not 3-4 - is what I am told.
As I understand it, the car can now get into these gears (again, not 3-4).
I am going to the shop soon to ask more questions.
Sounds like BS to me Replaced some components? Which components & where? Certainly not inside the transmission - its a big deal to open it up and take it apart you dont just replace a few parts & button it back up to see if it works. You do a complete tear down & rebuild. **Most shops wont do this unless they specialize in transmissions (and in most cases Porsche transmission). Just my $.02
Unfortunately that sounds like an internal.
For some reason the 3 4 selector fork may not be engaging the gear.
Only other thing I can think of would be that they actually have 1 2 3 and 4 working and have the cable adjusted so far out of range its not able to select the 5 and 6 fork.
90% of the time the second gear shift is cables or shifter adjustment. Especially with aftermarket short shifter, I would guess adjustment needed especially if car hasnt been driven much lately.
Well sorry to hear to OP it was a full rebuild but what you described could be my issue... yesterday I lost the ability to blip/ rev match downshift in my newly acquired C2, I drove it for two days with no real issues to note, then all of a sudden I heard a pop yesterday pulling out my driveway, 30 or so minutes in I start having trouble down shifting into 2nd gear, every time I do it (especially at higher RPM) a pretty gnarly grind) up shifting and down shifting very slowly ( almost like in a car without synchromesh gearbox) it is alright, but it all still feels a little crunchier in all the gears than the prior two days, but I can still blip/ heel toe down without an issue them all outside of 2nd which will grind every time. The car has only had about 10k miles put on it in the last 5 years, and been sitting for the better part of a year before I picked it up this Thursday.
With the help of a fellow RL member I was able to check on the shifter end and the cables all seemed fine, the only weird thing to note is a lot of lateral play up and down in the 2nd gear gate, vs 4th, or any other gears. My mind tell me the synchros have failed because I can still downshift very slowly and at low rpm's, but higher up is where it grinds. All advice is appreciated, and sorry for the total thread hijack OP, how is the car doing now? The video below shows the lateral play in neutral, but it is about the same in 2nd, but much less in the other gates.
