I've had my 09 Boxster for 2 weeks. It has the CDR30 radio, Sound Package plus, Blue Tooth and UAI.
I think I would have been happier with a hole in the middle of my dash.
Instead I have a black hole to suck more $$$$ out of my pocket.
The factory unit runs ~$1500, not sure if that includes the CDR30, since the radio is included in the list of basics. I thought I would add an aftermarket GPS and XM but it seems trying to find a place for a clean install is almost impossible. As I use the CD I find the controls counter-intuitive and trying to get through the menus on an MP3 disk is a major pain.
I can't believe I'm thinking of pulling out a $1500+ system. An then I discover the current system uses Optical connections further complicating the situation.
It is unbelievable that this POS is in a $60K car.
I've looked at some of the installs members have done. If you can steer me to some specific installs on outboard GPS and XM units I would appreciate the help.:thanks::helpme:
Hey, no complaints from the '09 owners, at least you get an aux-in.
Not clear about your post.
You hate the unit and want it replaced with something aftermarket?
or
You hate how hard it is to integrate other aftermarket parts to it?
If you hate the unit than why add GPS and XM? If not why not go the factory XM unit route, I have done that on two other cars and on my third I added a XM radio unit. I would definitely get the factory XM unit, but it requires PCM which I do not know if you have one. Adding an external XM receiver you should be able to just add it to the AUX in. I had to get a Dension ICE for my 06 to get it integrated.
Thanks for the response.
The rant is out of frustration, I am encountering installers including 1 Porsche referred me to that are frustrasted.
1- The dealer wants between $600-$700 to add Factory XM to the car. I think this is absurd. The system sounds nice; radio is fairly well thought out but the CD menu layout is the pits if you use MP3 disks.
2- I don't believe that the vehicle has PCM
3- I am not happy to hear that an after-market system would cost somewhere around $2K to make it compatible with the car. AND, there may still be compatibility problems because of the optical system used by Porshe.
4- I can hook up an XM module directly through the auxilliary wiring and lose the AUX jack or plug and unplug it when I want to use it.
5- At this point I am leaning towards adding an XM Commander (trying to figure out hoe to keep the XM hooked in without loosing the AUX would be nice) to the factory system and trying to figure out where to hang a GPS that will not be too obtrusive. The thought of putting $2K into an after market system when I have over $1500 in the factory system does not appeal to me, and putting any more into the factory system doesn't appeal to me.
6- Maybe part of the problem is I am used to Lexus. the systems have been well thought out, easy to navigate through the menus, and sound fine.
I would love to have that POS in my 60K car.
Not sure about the US, but the new Kenwood NAVI has optical connections for easier compatability.
Trade you my '06 for yours.
Please, What model Kenwood?
Thanks for the offer, but somehow I'll figure this out. Just needed to blow off some steam.
I guess you'll have that pleasure in your '10 Cayman.
Talking to the dealer and installer today.
Looks like only solution will be aftermarket. I can't even ask the dealer to upgrade the system to the Porsche PCM because compatibility problems with the car.
OK, thanks. I know the factory option is about $600, so to install it after the fact for that actually wouldn't be that bad. Every option Porsche has is quite overpriced, but I didn't really expect anything else.......
