Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anyone who's taken delivery of an '02 996 had any experience with noticeable creaks and rattles? I got my cabriolet 2 weeks ago and there has been a lot of rattling in the convertible top and passenger compartment especially when I'm driving on concrete as opposed to blacktop. The dealer took the car in and tightened the top, but the rattles persist from the passenger compartment. I'm upset and distressed because the '99 996 I had for three years and 55k miles never developed any squeaks.

POST 2Original post

I don't have the experience with the MY '02, but my '99 996 did develop a passenger compartment rattle at one point, which the dealer easily remedied. It turned out to merely require removal and reinstallation of the cd disk holder in the front dash (if that lead is helpful or relevant to MY '02).

POST 3Original post

Don't know that it's necessarily a cab problem. My 01 had a nasty creak coming from the back of driver's door or slightly back that showed up over bumps and when putting the top up (at the very end when the hook starts to get tight). It turned out to be the door latch which was replaced and all is well. Also, there was a very annoying rattle in the passenger air vent which shows up only when the top is up. It ALWAYS makes noise EXCEPT when it was at the dealer for it's annual service last week :-( They tried to fix the sound they couldn't hear anyway (beyond the call of duty), but sure enough it was back this weekend :-( Just have to make sure not to drive with the top up :-)

POST 4Original post

Hi: FWIW regarding rattles in 02 Cab. Mine is very tight after 900 miles. I do get rattles with hardtop on tho. Also shutting door with top down and windows open sounds very "tinny", like a cheap car. Otherwise tight as a drum. Don Watson 02 C4 Cab.null null

POST 5Original post

I have a 02 coupe-severe noises and creaking in dash just started-am taking it in this week....mechanic went for a ride-heard the noises..says he has to pull the dash apart-it's a design flaw..the structure is so stiff that anything plastic, leather or vinyl makes some noise-says I'll probably have to live with a bit of it.....I personally feel it should be rock solid like the older 911's I've owned....any thoughts ?

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just brought my '02 cab in to the dealer today for the second time because of the problem with the covertible top squeaking (sounds like rubber on rubber or rubber on metal on the driver's side). There's absolutely no rattling when the top is down or when I have the hardtop on. I also too wonder if the stiffer chassis and suspension are part of the cause since I didn't have a single rattle in the '99 cab that I had for three years and 55k mi.
