Lots of different opinions on this. I run about 20 track days a year and compete in a Time Trial championship series. I play to win. If it were my car I would leave the motor alone and focus on the contact patch. Do I have the right
tires
? Are they wearing evenly? Do I need more camber or lateral G control? Do I have good F/R balanced grip? These are the questions top drivers ask to get the fastest lap times at the track.
Awesome! That I still need to learn.
Can u further explain on "If it were my car I would leave the motor alone and focus on the contact patch. Do I have the right
tires
? Are they wearing evenly? Do I need more camber or lateral G control? Do I have good F/R balanced grip?
Tks bro
The Cay R is a pretty potent track weapon with the right
tires
, right setup, and a keen driver. Focus on your contact patch and you can shave 3-5 seconds off your lap times. Focus on keen performance driving skills and you can shave another 5-10 seconds per lap. Do all of the above listed tuner mods on the motor and maybe shave a few tenths. The most effective track performance $$ are always spent on
tires
, pro setup, and pro coaching.
-Get off comfy street
tires
and mount best-in class track rubber.
-Have your local
Porsche
racing shop do a corner balance and alignment, adding negative camber as recommended by the setup guy to make the most of your fresh rubber.
-Get a pro coach in your car at every track day event and become a serious student of performance driving.
Hi Rex, are your track days at Sepang Circuit? I lived in KL for a few years and got to drive that track couple times (09
Cayman
2.9)- very challenging but loved it.
My
Cayman
R mods sequence is not necessarily the best but here's what I've done in order:
-GT3 LCAs in front to get over -2 deg camber, no mods needed for -2 in rear. This was mainly to improve tire wear
-18in wheels (O.Z.) and 200 TW
tires
(Yoko AD08r,
Hankook
RS-3,
Bridgestone
RE-11). Currently on
Bridgestone
RE-71 or
Nitto
NT01
-SRF brake fluid and Pagid race pads. 997GT3 front brake ducts. Currently running PFC-11 pads.
-Sport bucket seats, rollbar, Schroth 6pt harness, hans
-Go Pro to review video
-Aim Solo DL to record data and lap times
-Center radiator to increase cooling (driving the car faster in summer months was leading to high temps)
-I get instruction when possible, and have had a pro coach help me including setting a reference fast lap in my car.
- no engine mods since I'm still about 1 sec off the pro reference lap which means I can't yet use the stock power to it's potential
In your case of 3-4 events per year I'd suggest get a track oriented alignment with max neg camber in front with stock parts and rear camber to match and try that before GT3 LCAs. For
tires
the RE-71s should be available in 19in sizes and are very good but do wear fast. Consider a set of 18in wheels for track. Definitely keep fresh high temp brake fluid for Sepang days. Consider race pads but they can be noisy on the street. Video and data have been a big help to me. Best of luck.
thanks for explanation... currently i am using
michelin
cup2... and stock CR shock, so can't do corner balance weight... perhaps i thinking to change the
GT3 LCA
and RSS antiroll bar? do u recommend ? so i can have better camber adjustment n setting.. i had contacted pro to set up my car too... from now i just keep aside whatever mods can increase my car hp.... but handling n skill first! tks bro!
hi bro, may be we can meet up for discussion.. hehe... u from
porsche
club malaysia? yup... taking my CR to sepang coming merdeka day... btw my CR i had upgraded front 380mm 6 pot n back 355mm 4 pot
brembo
gt kit and its come with goodridge stainless steel, ferodo high performance pads(as it come with package) so can't fit in 18 inch rim due to the
rotor
size, all stock and its come with carbon fiber sport seat ... currently using
michelin
cup2 19 inch 235/265 ... standard is come from PS2 N spec..
i have
gopro
and Trackaddict apps.. hehe.. hope its is accurate...
what the usage for GT3 brake ducts? the GT3
master cylinder
?
GT3 LCAs in front to get over -2 deg camber, no mods needed for -2 in rear. This was mainly to improve tire wear (which brand u using? the gt3
lca, rss? tarentt? ) i will try out your setting? is the setting for 18 or 19 inch?
Center radiator to increase cooling (driving the car faster in summer months was leading to high temps) - i think original CR got center radiator ? i only know 987.2 2.9cc dont have the center radiator, correct me if i am wrong...
In your case of 3-4 events per year I'd suggest get a track oriented alignment with max neg camber in front with stock parts and rear camber to match and try that before GT3 LCAs. - not much can be done using the stock CR suspension right?
