One that is fitted I will be doing some measuring and then 3D printing a clip in bezel.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have something in mind that I can't see if anyone else has done before or not. But maybe some have and failed and I should learn from their mistakes...
I want to delete the centre console because of my height and knees and comfort.
Also, I dislike the flimsy cupholder, wonder of engineering that it is.
I am thinking I can remove the cupholders and just fit the climate controls and a double-din head unit in the space there. There will be some hacking at the plastic and some hand made metal brackets.
Has anyone heard of this being done before? Am I on a fool's errand?
There is a kit:
https://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Porsche-996-997-Carrera/75-BODY-GT3_Center_Console_Delete/75-BODY-GT3_Center_Console_Delete.htm
Thanks for the link, I am aware of the console conversion kits.
My question is about fitting the climate controls AND a double din media head unit in the dashboard with the cupholders removed.
Sorry if that wasn't clear.
Nah Cap'n, man up, delete the console and go for a nice and easy Continental single DIN radio and cup holders that clip onto the forward door pocket.......
Yes I think thats the one , I think he fitted a new head unit install kit that helped with making it all fit with a stanatd look . Been a while since i watched it.
I’m in a similar dilemma sir.
Trying to resolve where I could relocate the HVAC . Have access to 3D print. however, so far nothing resolved, as only logical though inconvenient location for HVAC is setback under dash where the delete panel is.
If it’s about reverse camera ? could man up put on chaps ala
@TwoHeadsTas
go with sgl Din unit/ reverse mirror/HVAC combo and delete centre console . Something I might consider.

on the 964 thread .. 996 sans HVAC might not be as enticing as a ballsy 964. P.a never thought 964 a/c that bad.
Imma gonna git out the calipers.
Going to measure the harness with only the vents and see if I can jerry rig something to hold it all in, at least tight enough for the kind of girls I would like to date.
It's about the Android Auto and the Waze with the speed camera warnings and the like.
Dear sir , we are overdue for a beer... being a good doodling pen
though
more seriously , if you get close to a Solution interested
in my 74 targa iPhone on cradle /Bose noise cancelling is a useful combo
I promise, once the Wuhan Spicy Lung scourge is defeated, beers can be shared. A drive along the Hume would do me well, or at least bed in the new brakes being downhill to Canberra from Sydney.
Would you be able to fit the the HVAC unit into the centre console storage unit between the seats?
If it fits inside that space surely you could run the wires between the centre tunnel and the centre console into the storage container. It would be tucked away, but still easily accessible.
It's a great idea and it would fit but the wire bundle is not long enough I have found today. And there are A LOT of tiny wires to patch if I wanted to extend it.
Centre console is out and I have spent the better part of today figuring out what the previous head unit installer had done. There were so many wires patched unnecessarily and a really scrappy RCA and power lead to the centre console for a digital radio unit.
18 years of knee rubbing captured in a piece of trim:
I think the best solution is:
1. Cut outs of the black frame.
2. Folded sheet metal frame connecting to the lower rear points and resting on the lower dash.
I am asking a nearby sheet metal workshop how much for a one off. I plan to trim and drill the first one and then get a final one done based on the first prototypes dimensions.
Sent off to be made! I might not get to fit it until after Christmas but this is really happening. If it works and looks nice enough I will share the DXF and destructions
@michel
You are too too kind dear Sir…
been thinking also a roof mounted console... Trans Am style might be a good way to go as well. searched all the usual threads and places and surprise surprise a virgin mod
On a related serious note, you could print a slim case of some kind for the climate controls. That would be very neato. See pic below of the innards of the climate controls removed.
Reminds me of one of my early trips to Italy, hired an Alfa 75 sort of unofficial via a friend. Had no AC and window winders on the back doors but none on the front. Weird-arse handbrake lever I worked out but do you think I could work out how to operate what I assumed were power front windows?? Drove around Northern Italy a few days with the rear windows wound down. It was only the evening before I handed it back that I found the bloody window switches in the roof console!
Gotta love Alfas!
I am waiting for the metal shop to slot my one off in amongst the jobs to be done next time they are laser cutting 1mm gal or similar.
It is costing about $300 for the one off proto.
Behold, the world's first* double DIN and climate control centre-console delete mod**
Please PM with EOI, going to maybe make a bunch of frames for lads wanting to get their hands smeared in electrical tape residue.
* I think.
** prototype to be honest, going to refine and also make a bezel.
Love the work so far.
Just saw another alternative approach from Alpine Today:
https://www.alpine-usa.com/product/ilx409-alpine-halo9-multimedia-receiver
This is a single DIN unit where based on the installation manuals, you can change the vertical positioning of the display. Of course not wireless carplay .
Thanks. I did see a few of these and thought about it, but in the end I wanted to avoid the display sticking out or covering up anything else, like the CC unit or vents. It would definitely be an option though if you can accept those compromises.
@CapnHyaku
How did you get on?
Out of interest, was there a reason you didn't decide on the route as in the picture below? I could imagine that the controls are too far away if you are strapped into a 6 point harness, but with a normal belt may just work. Has anyone else done this? Is there enough room back there to do this cleanly?
Thanks for any tips.
My current frame (1st proto) works well and is still in the car. No squeaks or rattles, and it functions just like I wanted it to.
I've got my 3rd prototype frame done, I just haven't got around to fitting it yet. One that is fitted I will be doing some measuring and then 3D printing a clip in bezel. The plan after that is to refine the bezel and then mould it so it can be cast from black epoxy.
Then hopefully can sell a few to recoup the costs.
It is not a straight swap, you'll need to cut up the black frame (that sits behind the horse-shoe trim piece) but it is not difficult.
Here's what the first prototype frame looked like:
