Suggestion
Anyway would there be any benefit running a motec on a naturally aspirated cable throttle 996??

We use a beat-up old Cayenne for the dogand pulling out bushes, trees, and other things you would expect a farm tractor to do.

Suggestion
Imho, with the exception of the powerband and power difference between the 3.4 and 3.6, using the same size wheels and similar suspension set-up, they pretty much "feel" the same to me.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Thanks for sharing, great read!
Unless I am mistaken, the author is slightly incorrect when stating PSM was standard, even beyond the later mention of the GT3 not having it.
I am almost certain my 10/98 build doesn't have TC, and if it does, I don't have a toggle switch on my panel to turn it on and off. In fact, all three of the toggle switch buttons are "unoptioned" in my car.
My '03 is PSM/TC free as well.
I find it interesting the comparison made between the .1 and .2. While I've never driven a .1, I can't imagine the .2 feeling like a GT car when they are essentially the same car.
I hear you. I have driven plenty of 996.1s and 996.2s, 964s, 993, 991s and recently a 992 GTS on the track. Some of them on the street as well. All have different "feels" which depend on alot of things and preferences.
Don't know if i would personally define a 996.2 as a GT car but thats how he described it from his comparative perspective.
Sure, there is a big difference in "feel" to driving a car with 17 versus 18 inch wheels. Same can be said about the powerband of the 3.4 versus 3.6. Throttle cable will give you more immediate response to your inputs, but can be easily addressed with software on the e-throttle cars. Imho, with the exception of the powerband and power difference between the 3.4 and 3.6, using the same size wheels and similar suspension set-up, they pretty much "feel" the same to me.
Just happy to see that the 996 is the new "hot" porsche to own. My local Porsche dealer was telling me a couple of weeks ago that it was the hottest car last year on their lot. Huge demand and they sell very fast. Good to see.
awesome and once again thank you for serving our country. Yeah my 99 doesnt have traction control but my 03 turbo does, in my turbo modified as soon as I start hitting 0.7 boost it start flashing the traction control. If Im going to race anyone Im turning my psm off. I raced a gt3 Saturday and it was raining hard Im glad I had traction control and all wheel drive because the gt3 guy told me he was hydroplaning awesome by the way
Thanks for the article link. Makes for some interesting reading. 99MY (made in 7/98), MT and cable throttle. Old school stuff...guess I own/drive a classic
My 2003 has PSM as an option. There are dozens of us! Dozens!
The only argument I can see for a GT car is maybe the Targa. Mine has a brown interior and heated seats with memory and lumbar support. Plus, it's a Tiptronic. I think this is about as close to a GT as it gets.
All y'all with your nannies and GT .2s, I drive a
real analog
porsche, clearly the .1s were the last analog cars ever made (unless you optioned TC/PSM, nice try!), when they cut over to .2 production the factory was moved to the moon as these are more spaceships than cars. It is my firm hope that I leave this earth as my car slams into a tree while spinning out of control at 90 mph in the rain and I'm yelling "ANALOGGGGGGGGGGGG". (/s)
The Author made light of the IMSB issues and made a mess of it Technically/statistically, but the readers in the comments straightened it out...
Good article and I like the 996 getting some love....( but keep it real)...
my 02 targa didnt have PSM or TC which i kinda liked minus when it rained. and back in the day, the bastard Porsches were the 964s minus the turbos. the only real issue i had w/ the looks was from the cartoon smiley face on then NAs, i put on a turbo front cover and the car looked like it was moving while parked. oh and the headlights, theyre werent bad but the reflectors on the housing made them stand out too much. the mode back then was to matte color the inner housing and the lenses blend into the car better
You can get quicker e-throttle response with software. I have Revo software from back in the day. I will eventually replace it with FVDs software when I pick up their M&M headers. Most top shelf software can do it.
i got Apr tune well worth the money. Anyway in a bit about two o clock in the morning Im going to the streets of Mexico to let the turbo rip if you dont know what Im talking about just watch 1320 video and you see what its all about. I already put two and a half gallons of 104 octane race fuel but havent decided which license plate Im wearing tonight no the regular 996 is not capable enough to play in this league you need at least 600 horsepower
Im like the transporter while people are wearing about the debt ceiling the border problems etc all Im concerned about is shifting gears and having fun yes I have already hit the juice
"Cable Throttle" "Analog Vehicle" "No Nannies" this stuff is the oxygen-free copper of the 2020's.
If you REALLY want an analog car go find something with a surface carburetor or a set of SU constant depression carbs. Anything else, well it's not "Analog". That throttle plate butterfly takes actual time to open, you know, and the increased venturi vacuum can't suck the fuel up quick enough so we need an artificial way to enrich the mixture called an accelerator pump. Heavens that can't be truly analog so got to go back earlier in time.
Sheesh.
Yea like constant flow mechanical fuel injection with ITB's, that's about as analog and instantaneous as it gets...lol
I built my own system, for my Record Holding drag car in the early 80's, they are making a come-back now in drag cars using Methanol...
I love methanol used to run it in my go cart, yes being 12 years old driving a go kart that could do 75 mph was fun. IMO you are the most knowledgeable and qualified guy here, De Jeeper is close. Anyway would there be any benefit running a motec on a naturally aspirated cable throttle 996?? By the way the only reason I say things about your products and FSI products is because the prices, I see how brilliant the products are I just can't sleep at night buying stuff I can't justify what I spent my money on. I read all your post and You deserved an Honorary PHD for all your contributions here.
I know how "thrifty" you are with your money even though you have plenty.....For your 99 996, your money would be MUCH better spent on a UAOS, than a Motec ( you would get many many advantages with UAOS vs stock, ...Motec vs Bosch 5.2.2 = nothing )
Analog smanalog
Modern 911s (ironically except the GT3s) ARE GT cars.
That definitely occurred sometime during the water cooled era.
The question is when?
My early 99 came from the factory with a six speed manual, limited slip differential, M030 suspension, hard back sport seats, 18 hollow spokes, unnecessary sunroof and not much else.
No full leather, PCCM, cup holders, glovebox, cd player or heated seats with memory.
Its the lightest water cooled Porsche 911 and the last one with a cable throttle.
(its also the least powerful)
Is a 996.2 loaded down with everything that doesnt help it accelerate or stop a GT car?
I dont think so but its heading that way.
Having a hard time understanding why a "GT" car is seen as a lesser now and can't be as fun or more fun to drive than a "sports" car. And honestly who even cares?! If you get kicks from being behind the wheel of it what else do you need? Internet validation? Go count how many GT3s are spec'd to the gills in full leather, PDK, comfort seats and 27 kinds of deviated stitching.
It's kind of fun watching the phases of comparisons between .1 and .2 cars in the 996 world. First, it was which headlights won LeMans, then interiors, followed by hollow spoke wheels and not to be dismissed the holy grail of all - behold the cable drive throttle
Looks like like we are now in the sports car vs GT car phase and boy oh boy I just can't wait to see what people will come up with next. My personal guess is a thinner and smaller windshield wiper reservoir giving you that 1oz weight advantage.
Porsche made this for 996 cup cars without headlight washers. I have one... closer to 4 pounds difference when full of fluid.
Since my car has such high mileage as to be essentially valueless I have no problems driving it, modifying it, and flogging it on track. Actually the mileage is why I bought it.
Well damn! Just learned something new! Thanks!
Also, never got the pride of not using the nice thing you got. Were these people trolled by adults as kids by being given a candy bar but they could only admire it from afar and read the ingredients on the label?
GT isnt a pejorative.
If you perceive it as one, you need to ask yourself why.
From the late 70s to the mid 90s the 911 was Porsches sports car and the 928 was the GT.
Different cars for different purposes.
Really enjoyed the article. Thanks to OP for posting it.
Since my wife and I just took in a new pooch, I'm starting to soften her up about selling the 986.2 Boxster and picking up a 996 cab. You know, back seat for the dog and all. Wish me luck.
Don't get me wrong, the Box is a great car and a ton of fun. But since I got my 996.2 coupe (C4S) that's the only thing I want to drive. The Boxster is the wife's "forever" car, but we'll see... I'd like to pick up a clean 996 cab while I can.
Keep on her, you got it! I just got away with something similar. I convinced my wife that if I sold the 986S we could upgrade to a C4S cab as a 'family' car to fit a car seat in the back. We now have a C4S cab in the garage that comfortably fits the 3 of us including little girl in a rear facing car seat. Weekend afternoon naps are perfect 2 hours fun driving opportunities.
I'll echo what they said at the end of the article. I wish I had picked one up 5 years ago when I bought my GTI instead. The maintenance scared me away at the time and I wish it hadn't.
my 03 C4cab has PSM, I occasionally turn it off but on the street for the most part I don't notice it,
it does almost make a doughnut impossible even on gravel.. (Had to test it dont ya know...)
Its actually kinda saved me once,, I over cooked it in a hairpin and it calmed the skid right down.
We use a beat-up old Cayenne for the dogand pulling out bushes, trees, and other things you would expect a farm tractor to do.
Also, if you want something slightly different, last December we bought a 2021 Macan, but my wife has now claimed 100% ownership of that vehicle and hell will have to arrive before we put fur in that vehicle.
The Macan is very modern, drives well, comfortable on a completely different plane than any 911, and can carry things. Not a substitute, but complimentary to the GT3.
its interesting that one described it as a monster of a car, i never thought that - being that it was a low optioned car, it was very user friendly and i let all my friends drive it b/c it was very easy car to drive. while the was quick in its time, i never felt it was fast - it was more of a balanced vehicle. i actually went oldschool after driving the 996.2 and i got an 83 BMW 320 w/ dual carbs, that was a real analog car
Chicco Keyfit30 without the base. Don't let me fool you though, I am lucky that my wife is 5'1" and is content not being able to recline. I probably only have a few more months of that level of patience with my wife!
We have a 2011 958 turbo stump puller (LOL). Great rig and I suspect we'll keep it until its wheels fall off. 115k miles and still screaming. Fortunately our dog is a poodle - half standard, half medium - so a decent sized dude who doesn't shed at all. Still, I want to get the lady in a dot 2 cab. I know many here had the hots for the early dot 1s but the interior of the MK2s and the C4S wide body do it for me.
It's been a year since this post. Whatever happened to our crazy Luis? Hope he didn't wrap his 996 TT around a tree flying triple digits while drunk in Mexico. No one can talk up his abilities to consume endless varieties of meat and drink while talking about being the glory days of working for Valvoline like Luis.
