Hey everyone,
I installed a 987 Motorsport AOS on Sunday and I'm having some issues. Looking for feedback.
Background:
I purchased a the 987 Motorsport AOS kit from
Suncoast
and installed it on Sunday. With the larger IPD Plenum, I could not fit the Y hose (
987 107 946 0) from the AOS to the plenum. I ended up use a 1" ID heater hose to connect the Motorsport AOS to the plenum. B
efore the install, I could distinctly hear the variocam actuation kick in at 5200 RPM. After the installation I could no longer hear the variocam actuation.
Tuesday, I noticed a sound very similar to a lifter tick (sounds exactly like this:

). I immediately suspected an issue with my AOS install and opened the engine compartment and noticed the heater hose had collapsed on itself due to the vacuum (the hose was still firmly connected with two hose clamps). I turned off the car, purchased a sturdier wire reinforced fuel line hose, and installed it. I've periodically checked the hose and it appears to maintaining its structure just fine.
Initially after installing the new hose, the lifter tick has subsided. But it comes and goes. I had one drive yesterday where the lifter tick was completely gone at idle and through the whole rev range. I've had the car start up with the tick immediately both at idle and low (sub 2200 RPMs). The car is also blowing a moderate amount of white smoke at start up. The car rarely blew smoke at start up with the stock AOS.
I broke the stock Y hose so I cannot install the stock AOS to determine if the lifter tick is a coincidence or not. I've already ordered a replacement stock Y hose to rule out coincidence.
My current theories are:
1. The motorsport AOS was a defective unit.
2. The collapsed heater hose created too high a vacuum and damaged the motorsport AOS internals.
3. The motorsport AOS install is independent of the lifter tick.
I think 3 is unlikely due to timing of the lifter tick as well as the white smoke at start up. I've also started the car and removed the oil cap. The cap was removed with a moderate of force and I observed, what I consider, a normal amount of vacuum. Based on my basic understanding of the PCV systems, I don't see how the AOS could affect variocam and the lifters. I'm taking the car to my local mechanic on Tuesday for more diagnostics. But I'm open to any feedback or advice.

Any update on this? I want to change out the plastic lower line for a real hose.
