I ran across a brit that ordered these on youtube, he stated excellent oem quality.

Suggestion
But I for one am getting tired of replacing poorly made Chinese lightbulbs around my house.

The coloured crests on my first set from China faded after 12 months but I guess for such a good price you cannot grumble!
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The knock-off also has a lot more tabs on the back of it but it's fitment was still not as tight and secure as the OEM ones on the set of wheels that it came with.
I didn't want to pay $170 for four pieces of plastic... so I'm taking a chance on a set of four from China for twenty bucks on Ebay. Paid through Paypal to be safe.
I ran across a brit that ordered these on youtube, he stated excellent oem quality.
I'll update you once I receive them, but they must be coming by boat because they're not due until August 22nd to September 3rd !! Lol
Ordered a few different coloured sets of these. Only issue I have found is the paint on them doesn't weather very well and chips after a while. However lasted a good year and for £15 posted I'd say its not a bad investment in comparison to the OEM ones.
They don't last long. The coating or something on one of the them started to wear off after just few months. Likely due to wheel cleaner I am using possibly?
So why not just pop them off before cleaning and put back on... all it takes is a small allen wrench to fit in the hole and pull gently with pliers to pull them off, then snap back on
The coloured crests on my first set from China faded after 12 months but I guess for such a good price you cannot grumble! Just bought another set and this time have spray applied several coats of clear lacquer to try and make them look good for a little longer.
So here's the math $180 shipped from "some dealers" or $20 from the China guy....consensus is they last about a year, but I am going to try the lacquer spray when they arrive. Again I'd suggest just pulling them off during wheel wax or buffing, allen wrench in the tiny holes and a pair of plyers to pull. I saw an actual tool for sale for $42 to pull the caps...LMAO...love you tube videos which showed me the trick.
$180 div by $23 gives you 7 sets total or a 7 year supply...lol works for me...I'll post the process. For plastic wheel caps, this is a great "hack" vs OEM.
agree. Lacquer is a good idea. I'm going to try. And these crest were (at least the ones I had) laminated in thin plastic. Over the time they peal off I think because once during wash it just came off while
using brush on it. I have a coat hanger hook to take them off easily... Time to use them again.
Thanks for the buzz kill man...Jesus..who effing cares, it's a cheap option that works....So now everyone on here will have to pay $170 plus for plastic wheel caps. They've been on ebay for a while so good luck to PCA. So technically everything that's not OEM in your opinion is "counterfeit" and should be taken off the market, or did you just pay $170 for plastic wheel caps?? By your logic we should not add anything to our cars thats not OEM or made outside the USA?? which is it??? wow...pick your battles man....relax....
One of my other hobbies is playing/collecting Martin guitars. China has been bad about making knock-off Martin (Gibson & Taylor) guitars . . . sometimes changing the name
slightly
and sometimes not. You might say, "Well a guitar is just made out of wood and varnish. What could be the problem?" The problem is that it doesn't take long to figure out that the China copy isn't made to the standards of a real Martin guitar. The wood is not as good. The construction techniques aren't as good. The finish is not as good. The sound is
nowhere close
. And one day some poor schmuck is going to buy a "Martin" off e-bay and get a really bad copy instead.
I don't care what kind of wheel caps you use. If you like the knockoffs from China that's fine. But I for one am getting tired of replacing poorly made Chinese lightbulbs around my house. (I've got a hunch that the electronics in my wife's new Mercedes E-300 are made in China. They keep screwing up. :wall: ) And, yes, I know that my iPhone is made in China.
I am old enough to remember when "Made in Japan" was a term of derision. We have changed that to "Made in China".
Thank you. My rant is over. Enjoy your wheel caps.
Well I didn't mean to start a war of words over effing colored plastic wheel caps, but I'm happy with my purchase and I ordered two more sets!!
Here's the link for others that don't give a **** where the wheel caps originate. [Link Removed per forum Rules]
Now I'm being accussed of putting 100 people out of business!! Oh my Lord....LMAO
I guess no ones allowed to buy anything from China anymore...LOL...this cracks me for those that are so upset over my purchase of colored wheel caps...you have WAY to much time on your hands!!! I guess I should turn myself into the sherriff for a legal purchase on Ebay?? lol
Please check next time you're out shopping how many things are "Made in China". But by all means, please purchase yours from a Porsche dealer, I choose to make smarter choices for accessories on my Box S. But please don't buy anything thats not OEM from any of our sponsors in Europe or anywhere but the US of A as well. :hilarious:
I don't for a second think that the your purchase and promotion of counterfeit wheel caps is going to make the slightest difference in the great scheme of things and I couldn't care less if you buy 500 of them. However, the Terms of Use for P9 expressly forbid this type of post and that is going to rankle people.
If you want cheaper oem parts, stop buying unlicensed Chinese knock-offs!
I bought a set of black ones, used, from Europe and worried they might be those crap ones. Luckily they weren't and I'm very happy to have the real deal. I'll happily buy aftermarket parts, but not ones pretending to be oem. In some cases it can be dangerous. In this case it's just short term thinking.
Reconsider what you're doing. For all of us.
FWIW, I have a set of these center caps in question. They are currently in my junk drawer because they don't match the wheel color and they don't fit well. Colors don't look right either. They are passable but certainly not premium or OEM quality. $170 is way over-priced for OEM, but $20 may be a bit over-priced for these too.
I won't pay $170 for wheel caps, but I also won't put low quality parts on my car.
I don't give 2 $hits what center caps someone wants to put on their car (to each their own). This is more just meant to be informative to someone considering one vs the other, I personally had a set of the Ebay knock-off types (came with a set of OEM wheels I purchased from someone on the forums) and have compared it side by side to the real/OEM ones. On their own they look ok and may even fool some in to thinking they are identical in looks to the real ones but in a side by side comparison, it was obvious to me the shape of the Porsche crest was a little off and the finish/color of the silver portion of the center
cap
and the crest itself were also lighter or slightly faded and not as nice looking as the real ones. The knock-off also has a lot more tabs on the back of it but it's fitment was still not as tight and secure as the OEM ones on the set of wheels that it came with.
Below are a few pics of the knock offs, unfortunately I can't find the pics where I took side by sides with the OEM ones.
But here are a few pics of OEM black & silver ones:
Like someone said earlier, you do get what you pay for, but it depends what your expectations/priorities are, some may not care enough about the aesthetic differences I noted above and price is the bigger factor. Even for myself it depends on the part and usage of said part, e.g. take a look at this recent video from the 991 Turbo S exclusive series and look at the amount of work/labor/detail that goes in to making one single carbon fiber center console piece:
I have this piece on my car and yes it cost ~$500 to buy the oem piece from a Porsche dealer and yes you can probably buy a ~$100-200 knock-off that someone probably layered carbon fabric over and epoxied and what not in their basement on Ebay but to me it was worth spending the money knowing the quality/workmanship/Engineering that went in to just this little piece and many of the other parts that make up the car. After all isn't that's at least part of the reason why we all bought Porsches in the first place.
I agree with the above statement. I also see the point about a trade marked item. I feel there are some items that Porsche over charges (in my opinion) on some items like the faux aluminum gas
cap
and wheel crests. As for the inherent quality, maybe they should address peeling radio knobs and falling roof liners!!! Don't get me wrong, I am a Porsche guy all the way...just saying.
Well for those that dont care...the new ones were installed and look great. Same markings as the old ones so I guess those were "comminist" wheel caps too from my previous owner. I just wonder how many will stop me on the street and ask if my wheel caps are OE or an after market version from China. :gossip:
I personally will keep buying these for $23 shipped, great quality,..oh, and I was asked if I knew what OEM means...in this case I'd have to say Obtrusive Egomaniac...for so much concern over effing wheel caps.
Old version and new ones and on the wheel. Boxes and labels, both made in Italy on back, my old and new, but label says made in Spain...oh no!!... Its an international conspiracy!!
Takes two weeks to arrive....FYI. 5 star rating from me! Fix perfectly.
