I ran back to back styles on Novi 2k (different car similar engine) and draw through MAF was much better.
Leading evidence: 'Run back' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'maf style being a hot film sensor' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace impellar' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I couldn't track down a used VF kit, so I decided to build my own Procharger kit based on a PSC1. Almost done fabbing the bracket and the rest should go quick. Plan is to try water/meth instead of an intercooler, since it's much easier and max boost will be around 6 psi, which is boarderline for really needing an intercooler. The biggest pain so far is that annoying SAI pump that gets in the way. Trying to decide whether to relocate or delete. Will post updates when I can.
Thanks. Little delayed right now, trying to do some maintenance things while I'm in there. Working on plugs, coils, water pump, thermostat. Should be back on to the supercharger in a couple weeks.
Yes sir I understand. I'm currently saving up for a ton of parts to hopefully install next year. I currently have the B&N short shifter and a set of fabspeed headers under the bed. I don't want to put them on, I want to put everything on at once. I should have a CAT bypass, Evoms CAI, IPD plenum, tune and possible GT3 throttle body and lightened flywheel (still researching those two). Along with all my tune up parts the IMS solution, clutch, water pump, plugs, belts coil packs and air/oil separator. May have left a thing or two off the list.
Nice, he's been extremely helpful for me.
Finally making a little progress. Getting ready to cut the final mount. Prob won't be the prettiest but it'll work.
I would ditch the K&N piping and use a draw through method on the MAF with the BOV recycling to the intake of the supercharger after the MAF.
Clearance/space looks tough so perhaps cannot get that luxury. I ran back to back styles on Novi 2k (different car similar engine) and draw through MAF was much better. There are strange issues with the BOV being close to the MAF and venting to atmosphere, especially at higher boost. Hope you don't run into that.
I believe it was due to the MAF style being a hot film sensor that measures the cooling effect of the air passing over it. Then you have the pre-heat due to the supercharger (boyle's/ideal gas law) and the MAF gets confused and sends crappy signals to the ECU.
Thanks, that's really helpful. I'm a little worried it might give me issues, but going to try it out this way just for simplicity. I'm only going to run about 6-7 lbs boost, so hoping it might not be an issue.
Also wondering if it will fix any issues if I modify the the piping a little bit after the bov, so the maf is on the top side and much further away from the bov.
Here's a couple of the engine and meth setups. Ignore my ugly air filter and hose clamps lol..just temporary. Tried the base tune tonight, but ran rough. Hoping next try goes better. Otherwise, might be switching maf and bov setup.
Will be adding afr gauge later on
Just about done. Finished product is looking decent. Hope to have some 1/4 mile data in a month or so. Have a newborn, so tough to get out soon.
have a video on youtube:

Congrats on getting it running... It doesn't sound very healthy in the you tube video - hopefully it's just bad sounding video, but it's not doing you any favors. Mybe try to get a better recording... Good luck with it!
Wow impressive you did it for only 3k. Any way you could provide a quick break down of the parts and cost for the larger items like tune, and the pro charger unit itself.
Big savings was on the Procharger. I got it used for $735. New they are about $2.5k. There are plenty of them used on the muscle car forums, since a lot of those guys end up going with a bigger charger eventually.
Procharger: $735
Tune: $1100
Meth Kit: $400
Metal for mount and spacers: $75
Piping/Couplers: $150
Crappy ebay BOV: $60...will prob swap for used vortech or procharger valve for ~$200
The rest is misc parts and repurchasing things while I was building like belts, couplers, screws, etc.
Sorry been side tracked lately with new baby in the fam. I'm just waiting on the final final tune file, but its been running great and reliable for the last couple months. I drive it to work once a week or so with no issues. Still trying to get to the track to give you all a real idea of performance. Butt dyno tells me it should run in the low to mid 12s 😁.
Quick update...Project is still going. I've been trying to get the final tune done for a couple months now, but it has been slow going
. Hoping I have it in the next week or so and can get to the track before it's closed for the season to get the real numbers. Good news is it's still running strong on the base tune...no issues at all, just don't want to push it real hard until I have the best tune. I'm also hoping the tweaked tune gets me closer to low 12s
Finally got my updated tune. Planning to get to the track this weekend 😁. Pulling pretty nice in this cooler NJ air so well see. If numbers arent what Im looking for Ill be upgrading the impeller over the winter while I fine tune the rest of the setup. Will post the results.
Nice excited to hear the results. Do you have any plans to get the car on a dyno?
Curious this setup doesn't use a add on crank pulley your just using the existing serpentine path with a longer belt?
Unfortunately didnt get to the track this weekend, so looks like I wont have hard numbers til spring.
If I can find an awd dyno near me with a decent price for a couple pulls, I will def try to get it dynoed once I have everything perfect. Im mainly just playing around with different BOVs now, so almost there. Would also be nice to get a before and after dyno if I do an impellar upgrade.
I just have an additional idler pulley to help get good wrap on the alternator, with a longer serp belt.
How does the supercharger sound on the car? Wasn't sure if prochargers are quiet or you can hear some whine from it.
What did you need to do for the crank case venting?
It has a little whine to it cus its an older model with straight gears, but not real loud. Im running the bov to atmosphere so the air flowing is the loudest part. You hear it all the time but I like it and its not real loud outside of the car.
For the crankcase vent I extended the hose to connect to the intake tube right in front of the SC inlet.
Hey, sorry, Ive been at a stand still due to new baby in the fam and a couple house projects. However, car is running great. It is def quicker and more fun to drive. Ive put about 1k miles on with no issues. Im about to start playing around with the piping and different BOV to see if I can optimize it a little more. Im also planning to change the impellar to get boost a little sooner. Should have this all done in a few months. I think the tune is good, but Im guessing could be slightly better if I get it dyno tuned. However, very happy with the ease of email tuning.
Wonderful, thanks for the reply man. So since the tuner has a functioning file now, I am assuming others could use it as a base tune? Is he open to that? Figure he'd want to make some money on some good work.
What did you use for a belt? How many tensioners did you change? Are you looking at the new P1X impeller with the taller vanes? Seems like it might be the way to go
Its possible hell have a good base tune now. I used Todd Knighton from promotive. I think it was about the same price to get canned tune from VF or a full custom tune from Todd, so was an easy choice.
I ended up using a 103 gatorback belt. I relocated the top tensioner and added one tensioner. I think the setup is very similar to the VF bracket. However, i did modify the coolant hose so it would run a little more out of the way so I didnt have to be as exact with the tensioner placements. I also went with a 3.4 pulley on the procharger. I started with 3.8, but clearance wasnt great and boost was a little low.
Yes, def looking for taller vaines. Looks like there are a few options out there. Would love to make more boost a little sooner. Im getting about 3 psi around 3k rpms and would like to see that cloeser to the 2k range, but well see. Coming from a vette, missing that low-end punch 😁
Awesome, feel free to reach out if you get going on the project and have any questions.
sorry just looked back and realized you had mentioned his name before
what injectors are you using? i purchased some bosh 550cc ones so i am curious if he would have to remap them or not
this is the website? i dont see his name mentioned on there but google pointed me there http://www.protomotive.com/home.html
also what meth setup / config are you using? i plan to do the same thing and am debating on what to do, i am really considering only doing a 25% meth / 75% water because i am more interested in lowering the temp for safety than making more power
thanks for all of the info and creating this thread because there is very little info out there
Np, his email is [email removed]
i went with siemens deka 60lb injectors based on Todds recommendation.
Im now using 50/50 meth and a snow performance progressive kit. Same for me, really only worried about cooling. I tried washer fluid first at around 70/30, but had a scary mishap where I almost hydrolocked when I was spraying too much. Car completey shutdown and couldnt get it started for about 5 min. I assume the water had to burn off. I did some reading and I think the slightly the higher meth content will help make sure it burns better to avoid hydrolock. After the mishap I went with very minimal spray and will work my way up. Once Im happy with the piping and bov Ill start tuning the meth with the wideband to get it more optimal.
I hear you, not a ton of info on this type of stuff for the m96 and Im very much a novice. I had to sparce info from many different spots and did a lot of learning on the go, but been fun.
thanks again for the info, i think you mean @protomotive.com right? i will send him a mail and see what he says
to bad he is not closer he is about 1k miles from me
but maybe a good roadtrip lol or maybe i can borrow my buddies trailer and tow it there
Oh yes, protomotive, sorry
my tune was all email through the durametric tool and palmer performance scantool. He sent me the base, the i deove the car and sent him the log file and he sent me back a revised tune. He has done tons of BF and TPC lits, so the base was pretty close to start.
