I'm not taking the car before a test drive to see if the sound is still there or not.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So i've noticed that when my car is fully warmed up and on idle it produces a whistle? sound from the rear on the right side.
What could that be?
Very annoying.
2010 CS with 15,000km.
Funny coincidence, mine just started that last week. At first I only noticed it in the afternoon, driving home from work - not in the mornings - so I thought it only happened in high heat ( I'm in central Florida - it's been about 10-15 degrees F hotter in the PM). But the last few days I've also noticed it as I was parking at work - a drive of about 45 minutes in the morning - more like 55 in the evening. It started making the noise in the last few miles of the trip (about 19 miles).
I think "whistle" is a good description. Not a squeal like a loose belt. An only at dead idle. Even a light touch on the gas pedal and it goes away. Maybe a vaccuum leak? BTW, I haven't made any mods in the engine comparment.
I've been planning to take it to the dealer - just haven't gotten round to it. It is a 2010 C (2.9L). Bought it in March.
And yes it is VERY annoying - especially with the window down.
I had this same problem at around 3,500 miles on my 2010 CS. In 2x for it and was told it was the oil separator. After the second fix it did it again and when I took it back in they said it was my water pump and replaced it. Seems to be o.k. since then. Now have 5,300 miles so hope that is the end of it. Good luck guys! Hope this helps.
Exactly. just the slightest touch of the pedal and it goes away.
I'm taking it to the dealer today to see what's up.
Hope it's just something easily fixed.
Car is @ the dealer. I've told them to pay special attention to the oil separator line,
alternator
, and the water pump. It could be one of those 3 based on what i've read on the forums.
Hope it's something minor and gets fixed asap.
Good luck with it. I am betting on water pump. My car also did the exact same thing as far as far as giving it a little gas and it would stop. Mostly made the sound at idle.
Car is back from the dealer.... they say they hear no sound, i took it home and it started again.
I drove the car back and got the mechanic out to hear it and there definetely is a whistling sound. They took the car in but still can't figure out what is wrong/or where the sound is coming from.
I'm very annoyed, I thought porsches were reliable lol.
I had a whistle/whine that was faint. It annoyed me so i brought it into the dealer and they found my engine idler bearing was shot. Have them check that too.
Sorry to hear you are still having issues. I know you saw my other post about the water pump. Did they check that out? It took me several visits with the same problem as far as them not hearing it. Then I went back and took the car out with them and drove it pretty hard. It seems like after driving it this way i could get my car to duplicate the sound and they finally heard it. Hope you get some results soon.
I noticed an odd sound from the engine compartment (hard to explain, but not a whistling sound, more of a rotating belt like sound) and found fluid on the ground in my garage (clear with a slight pink color) which I assumed was coolant.
I took my 08 CS to Pacific Porsche in Torrance. It was diagnosed as a faulty water pump and will be replaced under warranty. Car will be ready within 3 hours. Nicco, the service manager was very friendly and responsive. I have avoided going to the dealer for service, but I have to admit, they diagnosed the problem right away while I waited, gave me a ride to work, and will have the car ready in 3 hours.
Mine is at the dealer right now. They were tearing into it as I left. Rats - only got a VW for a loaner - brand new & loaded - but it's no Pcar.
Anyway, it was squealing away, I could hear it from the customer's lounge. So they should be able to pin it down. I didn't try to diagnose it for them, but I did mention I saw others with water pump problems having the same symptom on this board.
BTW, this is the 1st time I've been back since I bought it in March. Their new car lot was mostly full of Panameras. Only 2
Caymans
(base).
The other thing that seemed strange was that I was the only customer there - and I called for an appointment yesterday afternoon. No work backlog. At the
BMW
dealership, there was always a crowd when the shop opened. So I hope these guys stay in business.
Got the car back from the dealer. Strange thing, the sound completely disappeared while the car was at the dealer, drove it back home and no sound at all.
They asked me to come back IF the sound ever comes back so they can pinpoint it.
Strange..
Well, I got the call. It
is
the water pump. Not in stock, of course, so I'm stuck with this VW for the weekend:drivingskid: CC Sport w/DSG.
Actually it's a quick little bugger, after you get past the turbo-lag. So I might as well have some fun....
So it seems that the majority of these issues are caused by water pump failures - in low milage cars. OK, Hassaan, it happens to CS's too, so please don't start pity-ing us poor base owners again.

Its been a while since i posted on here. I noticed this thread and its exactly the same thing going on with me. A ringing/whistling/whirring noise from the engine mostly at a warmed up idle with it going away when you depress the throttle. I took the car in yesterday and the dealer diagnosed it as the water pump. Glad we caught it as opposed to it failing when on the road.
What's your model, year and mileage? I'm wondering if there is an epidemic all of a sudden.
I got mine ('10 C w/5500 miles) last night after waiting the weekend for parts. All seems good now - might be too early to tell. I wonder how long this one will last.
Hope it is gone however do not be fooled. Mine did the same thing. It would come and go. It is rare that something makes a sound that does not mean something. For it to just go away does not really make sense. Is there another Porsche dealership you can take it to for a second opinion? Best of luck...
I am not an expert by any means however everything you have described sure sounds like the water pump. They missed it on mine twice before they found it. Maybe you can ask for the master tech guy to check it out. It is difficult because you would want to believe if they checked it out and said that the water pump is fine then it is however why do you still have this problem with your car? I have seen others describe your situation and they have also turned out to be the water pump. Good luck. Will be very interesting to see what they say.
It's right behind you. They have to remove that partition/firewall behind the seats to get to it. If they haven't done that, they haven't done a proper diagnosis.
If you aren't hearing it, I wouldn't worry about it. You have lots of warrantee left. If the noise is a water pump, it will come back. They don't usually fail catastrophically, it is just a bearing going. As it gets worse, it will get louder and may leak some. You will get it taken care of long before it gets so bad as to seize up. On the other hand, I wouldn't take off on a 1000Km trip across the desert.
If most of your driving is local, just keep your eyes and hears open, and your nose too - do you smell coolant? It will really help them if you can just drive in to the service center while it is squealing, like I did. They heard me before they even saw me. BTW, it took about 1/2 hr of city/highway driving before it made the noise. (the high pitched whistle probably got all the dogs barking). It started just as I got to the dealer.
Good luck.
Thanks for the tips.
Yes, you're right, they haven't looked behind the seat, just raised the car/removed the engine cover and looked visually.
I'll keep an ear/and nose out, for the thing you've told me.
Thank you.
