Took wife's '07
Cayman S
(34K miles) to dealer. Car off, shifts fine. Engine on, tough to get into first, second or reverse. Intermittently clutch pedal sticks to floor. To me it sounds like Slave cylinder problem - so I note that and work campaign 802 to the service adviser.
He calls. Said Mechanic drove car and says clutch is worn. Needs clutch, flywheel, press plate and bolts $3200.
I said that does not make sense, it's not slipping at all. It's a disengagement problem. he says, the clutch is worn so much that the pressure plate has adjusted to the point disengagement is difficult.
To me that still does not explain why the clutch pedal is intermittently sticking and why the problem comes and goes? seems more like slave cylinder to me.
Please comment. Thinking of taking to another dealer or an indy shop.
BTW -What should the clutch cost?
$3200.........HOLY MOLY!!!
I'd also check with an indy shop. Please let us know how this ends.
Hmmmm..... I'd go see another dealer. A worn clutch should not result it these symptoms.
I paid $1,700 at local Porsche dealer...
I had similar but not identical symptoms (no clutch to the floor). I paid $1,700 for Resurfaced flywheel, new pressure plate, clutch disk, throwout bearing, bolts and labor. This was at approximately 30,000 miles. I bought the car with 20K miles. I'm thinking the PO had quite a good time with this car. I think it would have been another $1k plus for a new flywheel.
FWIW, the front brakes are now needing pads at 34K miles.
Hope I can get better mileage on both of these maintenance items this time around.
Thanks for info. Of course based on your info, I'm still bothered that the dealer says I need a new flywheel where you were fine with resurfaced given that in my case all they did was drive the car. no disassembly and inspection
I have never heard of a worn clutch resulting in the pedal sticking to the bottom. The symptoms you describe sound like the clutch is not disengaging all the way.I would definitely get a second opinion.
To PCORMIER, 34,000 miles on a set of brake pads is a lot. Maybe PO didn't rag the car, just didn't know how to drive the clutch to preserve it. Maybe the PO weas one of those folks who hold a hill with the clutch or rode it.
Re: Clutch woes - update/outcome
OK, pulled car from dealer and took to indy, Porsche only shop. Two man shop that's been there forever, always seems to have 20 or so 911 derivatives in lot ranging back to the early 70's. Clearly many others trust their expertise.
Both mechanics drove it, both agreed it behaved like a hydraulic problem. They bled the system and said no bubbles. They inspected the slave cylinder, no sign of leakage. I told them to go ahead and rip open the clutch.
they said the pressure plate bolts were not tight, some coming off by hand. Said the dual mass flywheel was not working property, would not spring back. Said there was uneven wear and said guide tube the throwout bearing rides on was scored unusually for a car with 34K on it.
I told them to replace it all. They said that normally when they have the car that far apart, they usually replace the rear main oil seal, but upon inspection it appears to have already been replaced. That baffled them given the we got the car with 21K on it and it only has 34K now. So no leakage, they left it alone.
I'm guessing someone previously took it apart and never put it back together correctly. We'll see when they get it all back together tomorrow.
Re: Clutch woes - update/outcome
What year is that car?
'07, but to the best I can tell, not within the VIN range for the slave cylinder recall
I was curious if it was an 06, because some of the early cars suffered from insuficient pressure plate fastener torque. But it sounds like someone has already been inside your clutch, so the loose fasteners are probably their goof.
