I have a problem with my
Cayman
that I think needs addressing, and possibly a communication with
Porsche
for a solution. Briefly here is the problem:
The dash gauges on my
Cayman S
have red faces with black numbers. This is an optional accessory. The problem is it is virtually impossible to read these gauges in the daytime lighting. This is because there is almost no contrast between the red face background and the numbers. The gauges are very visible at night with the dash lights on. One can not illuminate the numbers in the daytime to make them visible, because the automatic dash light dimming feature turns off the dash lights. This is certainly an error in egernomics and is probably a safety issue that
Porsche
should be made aware of.
I would like to find a solution to this problem and can see three possibilities.
1. Find a way to make the dash lights come on full bright whenever the ignition switch is on.
2. Change the gauge faces to a color that has a contrast with the gauge numbers.
3. Replace the instrument cluster with a standard assembly that has a readable contrast.
I do think that probably
Porsche
is already aware of this problem and may have a solution available. I hope someone can help me find a solution to this problem.
Anyone have thoughts on this?
Thanks, Ricardo
I have to agree. I have a
2007 Cayman S
with a natural brown interior and matching gauge faces. It looks great when the light is just right but too often you just can't read the dials. I'm amazed that
Porsche
would throw away safety, practicality, & ergonomics for fashion. There ought to be a fix like a way to turn on the instrument lights via
PCM
or something. Really, it never should have happened. Over the years, I've been lucky to have owned several air-cooled
911s
and this is my first of the newer cars. I never would have beleived this of a
Porsche
.
I hear you. I hate the stock silver faces on the "S" cars, and covet my spouse's base
Boxster
's white on black gauges. Swapping the gauge faces is best done by a specialist, and you can remove the cluster and ship it to them for the change. Palo Alto Speedometer is one shop, there are others.
Palo Alto, eh? thanks! That could be a good thing to get accomplished over the winter...appreciate it!
Site Sponsor FVD Brombacher has an assortment of gauge faces available and they say they are easy to install.
+1. I
much
prefer the black gauge faces and brake calipers on my 2007 Cayman (non-S,) compared to the S-version's silver gauges and red calipers.
They will sell you any colour that you would buy as they would argue that the essential information is on the digital readout. Personally I would have thought about red faces and black numbers not being visible easily before i specced it.
Have you asked your dealer to do this? It sounds like something they might be able to do.
