I didnt want to change the headunit as I just want to connect my ipod but I just bought a Dension gateway 500 off Snowman28 from here and I tried plugging it in, but due to me not having a CD changer I don't have the port for a Cd changer either, so there is nowhere to plug the dension unit into.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys, I'm thinking of changing the PCM2 unit in my car to a double din unit. Just wondering if I have to stick to specific models out there as it needs to have a fibre optic connection. Is this true or can I get some kind of adaptor. Unless some1 can point out where I'm going wrong with the Dension unit. THe dension is for sale, and I need ideas on nice headunits taht are compatible with the bose fibre optic system. Thanks.

POST 2Original post

The Dension fits in the fibre optic line between the head unit and the amp in the boot - you don't need a CD socket. You have to separate the two orange lines from the plug going into the head unit and insert into/from the Dension. Otherwise you just rip out PCM and insert any double DIN head unit you fancy. It may need fiddling to drive the speakers but the speaker wire isn't fibre optic so it's a question of plug the wiring in (it may need crossovers). There's lots and lots on this topic here and on other sites and I am not an expert !

POST 3Original post

The speaker wires are conventional copper wires between the amp and speakers, but it is a fibre optic connection between head unit and amp. Therefore it isn't easy to connect up an aftermarket head unit. You would have to by-pass the amp, or replace it, and rewire the speaker connections. If you don't have a CD changer, then you would need to get the MOST gateway coded to fool the system that there was one present. The Dension then emulates a CD changer.
