Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

and just speak with the mechanic when it gets serviced in january to see if there is any fragments etc in the oil magnet, and check the RMS?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • 911uk: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey folks i have just read a wonderful webpage written by oz996 http://www.oz951.com/public/emmy.htm however it has left me slightly worried after reading the dreaded 996 IMS bearing problems!! and one of the tell tale signs is an oil leak on the forward end of the engine, and guess what i have got!!! wont have a chance to properly investigate this until i return from working abroad in a couple of months but i was wondering if anyone has had this replaced recently. if so how much cost/parts/labour is involved as il have to come up with some excuses to keep the misses sweet if it does need doing!!!! thanks as always John

POST 2Original post

The IMS seal leaks in the same area as the RMS (which is actually a diagnostics issue in itself). The front leak is not an IMS issue. As far as I can tell, there may be no warning of impending IMS failure.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

so basically i shouldnt loose any sleep over it? and just speak with the mechanic when it gets serviced in january to see if there is any fragments etc in the oil magnet, and check the RMS? if it is the rms surely it shouldnt leak after 15 months and 5000miles? JC

POST 4Original post

Plastic swarf is even more of an IMS tell tale. Shiny metal can come from anywhere (although the IMS bearings are particularly shiny due to the chromium strengthening). See here: http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=54280 As for your second point: :floor: Surely it shouldn't leak in its lifetime. Speak to the owners who have had one every three months.

POST 5Original post

John, Just because you have oil leaking in that area doesn't necessarily mean you have an impending IMS issue. As others have pointed out there are 996 owners who have experienced repeat RMS issues after having an RMS leak fixed. Your leak could be something similar. If your concerned about it and don't feel up to tackling it yourself I'd suggest ringing Hartech & Autofarm to get some professional opinions on options and costs. Glad you liked the page btw. Cheers.
