Fuel Injectors - found out that 997 injectors add more fuel than 996 injectors so installed new 996 injectors.

I did pull the alternator to check but it'd be much easier to strip and see all of the smog crap if I take the inlet manifolds off...and easier to modify whatever to go back to the 2002 setup...

I've done the recommended drive cycle many times but no luck, can't get it clear for long enough to get the smog test completed.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

I can reset it after the engine is warm and it’ll stay off until the ECU tries to fire the SAI after a highway run or after some running time, I haven’t quite figured out when else it is supposed to turn on.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey All,
I'm at my wits end, maybe someone can think of some avenue I haven't explored yet...
CA SFBay Area car...2002 996 C4, 70k miles when the IMS blew, 81k on her now. We really love the car...
996 motor died - IMS Failure - so I finally sourced a 2007 997.1, took me almost two years to win a car at CoParts auction... $12k.
My daughter and I transferred over the motor. Had some teething problems, we both learned a whole lot about Porsche cars during the project...
(997 injectors
are
different than 996...) We got it running fairly well in June. Definitely runs a little rich but runs strong with no rattles, hiccups etc.
Took it out of state and racked up almost 10k on it. CEL popped on the initial cold start but diagnostics showed an SAI failure so didn't really sweat it.
If I reset the CEL when the motor is hot, it sometimes might not come on for several hundred miles or until I do a cold start again.
Anyway, now back in sunny CA and I cannot figure out how to keep the CEL from turning on. I need to get it smogged and it won't pass with an active CEL. I've done the recommended drive cycle many times but no luck, can't get it clear for long enough to get the smog test completed.
997 has an onboard-the-engine SAI pump whereas 996 has a separate one. I hotwired a 40Amp fused ground for the SAI from pin 20 on the engine loom and the pump can be fired up by computer but it won't turn on as part of the normal cold start process. I had it at BRRacing earlier this year for help, they were the ones who told me about the injectors being different...great help but I'm hoping to find an indy closer to home - mid peninsula or SF possibly. Anyone got a lead on a good dependable indy shop around here?
I've pulled the alternator, looked at the onboard pump and it's connections and as far as I can tell (without pulling the motor again), all of the smog hoses are connected where they should be.
So, here's where I'm at...
And I have to say, pulling the motor is not at the top of my list. These cars are a pain to work on and pulling the motor in a home garage was quite the challenge, although I do now own
all
of the specialty tools to do the job...Red face
Option One : Pull the motor, disassemble all of the 2007 smog crap and put all of the 2002 smog crap on this 2007 motor, then re-install the motor and hope for the best... I did pull the alternator to check but it'd be much easier to strip and see all of the smog crap if I take the inlet manifolds off...and easier to modify whatever to go back to the 2002 setup...
Option Two : Pull the motor and sell it (~$10k), buy a Chevy V-8 (~$10k), buy basic Renegade parts (~$5k), put it all back together and hope for the best...
I know there's a group on here who are shaking their heads at the thought of the V8 but the car is already an "outlaw" so maybe why not?...
Option Three : Sell the car out of state - KBB says its worth $18k to $20k. Add more $$ and look for another (much younger) one with no IMS issues.
I do have a ton of 2007 parts I'll be putting up for sale here soon so that'll also help to offset some of the costs involved. I also intend to go to an active suspension setup as part of this process if we keep her.
Any leads on a mid-peninsula or SF shop that might want to help me negotiate this next part of the project?
Be nice please, I'm a tad tender at the moment... I could use some constructive help rather than opinions...
So I got the motor in and everything runs fine, still have some things to do including the how to photo story that is in process...the car runs well, has a few hesitations and grumbles but nothing much. Now I ned to get it smogged...
Questions for y'all:
CEL came on - It's throwing the secondary air valve code P0413 on cold start up. If I erase the codes after the car is started, the CEL doesn't come back on until the next cold start. Hot starts don't seem to trigger it.
On the 997, there isn't a secondary air pump so thus no place to hook up the 996 one to the motor.
According to some research hereabouts, the ECU measures the voltage of the secondary pump to determine whether it is working. Can anyone confirm that? If that is the case, could I install a resistance across the pump connector that would simulate that voltage drop? I'm thinking it would likely have to be via a relay so that it's not always present.
Is it possible to delete the secondary air pump requirement from the ECU programming? Is there a laptop option that can do that?
If I pull the ECU from the donor 997, would that be the easiest solution? Is that even possible? Would it screw up anything else on the 996?
Thanks to all of those who've helped me get this far.
Trying to fully comprehend what you have done and what you have accomplished. When you dropped in the 997 motor are you running it on the stock 996 ecu, 997 ecu or have you done some tuning. I would expect you should forget about smog in CA as it is likely you will always be throwing a code or two. I’m assuming you have looked at the diagnostic readiness test to see which codes are being thrown? That could tell you if there is any chance. You should check with James at Sharkwerks in Fremont, as he knows these engines inside out and may have even put a 997 motor in a 996 for a client.
Thanks for the response.
While I was comfortable replacing the motor, I’m not at all up to speed on the ECU/diagnostic side of things.
We did replace the following :
MAF sensor - I added a K&N intake when I bought the car 5 years ago.
O2 Sensors - all four replaced about 3 years ago
200 cell Cats - the originals were toast after my first weekend at Laguna Seca...
Fuel Injectors - found out that 997 injectors add more fuel than 996 injectors so installed new 996 injectors.
The rest of the 997 motor is untouched...
I don’t have a Durametric or PEWIS but my code reader tells me it’s a P0410 code. I can reset it after the engine is warm and it’ll stay off until the ECU tries to fire the SAI after a highway run or after some running time, I haven’t quite figured out when else it is supposed to turn on.
All I do know is that it invariably will turn on the CEL just as I’m thinking I may be able to get the SMOG done...
I will reach out to James later today to discuss options. Thanks for that lead.
