Since black leather is the worst for a convertible, I ordered the Luxor Beige interior and am getting extreme glare in the windshield due to the angle of the glass. I get totally blinded when pulling into my car port. They should have made the dash top black in all leather color choices. So I am in the process of finding someone to make me a dark brown dash mat. I caution anyone when placing an order to keep this in mind.
Otherwise, I am loving the way this car handles and the
PDK
is brilliant. My latest comparison is my previous
BMW
335i convert.
If anyone figures out how to hack in the electronics to lower the top outside the car, please forward the info. Keyless entry should have been standard, as it now comes on $20K cars. I had it on my 2 previous cars and am spoiled.
I have black interior and no glare for me. I wish I can say the same about the other drivers when they look at my car :hilarious:
do you wear sunglasses with polarized lenses? If not, get some it will reduce the glare.
Try using Zymol vinyl on your dash. It will protect it nicely and has a fairly matte finish.
BMW
also makes a similar product that is even more matte. Both are much better than Armor-all.
I have Red leather and car is in Florida (lots of sun) no glare at all in front or side windows. Factory finish is matte and I will not use armorall on it as the finish would change and be more reflective (IMO).
Rick
I have seen some car makers do just that, the topside of the dash is black/dark with the rest of the interior being the color selected.
I have had two 2012 Cayennes, one with black, one with Luxor and while there was more reflection with the Luxor, it wasnt distracting enough for me to not get it on my
Panamera
and
981
that is being built this Saturday.
I have read other threads and other forums with the same reflection comment for many car makers and vehicle models, I dont find Porsches any different from other manufacturers. For one person, the Luxor was enough to trade their car in!
I took the advice from a poster some time ago and while the theory was simple, it actually worked, instead of looking at the glass, look through it. When I focused on doing that, the glare seemed to go away.
I have a Jeep Wrangler as a DD and the reflection from everything inside (vin plate, belt latch, shift knob, you name it...) with the top down catches my eye, I have learned to just ignore it now.
The two-tone interiors are perfect for this - lighter seats, darker dash.
That's why I'm happy my car has the deviating dash in black ...
Niceeeeee!!!!!
Yep, carpet and dash in black on the red is nice. If I may ask, how much if any did you pay for this? Wondering if it would be possible to go deviating Luxor Beige/Natural Brown two-tone...
The MSRP was $121480 but I got it for just under $86K ... (NOS - left over 2011) ...3+mo of negotiating ...

I have no windshield glare problem from my Sand Beige Cayman dash.
Are you getting the glare when the top is up or down (I am assuming you have a Boxster?), or just when down?

Not wishing to hijack the thread but in a similar vein can members comment on the visibility when the top is up. I am seriously considering a
981
after a
Cayman S
. Looking at pictures with the top up it does look as though blind spots could be a severe problem. Foolishly, as it was lovely day, my test drive was with the top down!
There are blind spots but they are pushed further back because the cockpit is bigger/longer; with the side mirrors mounted on the doors closer to you it is quite effective in compensate for the blind spots.
I think the
981
rear visibility is better than the Mazda
Miata
I used to have as in the Mazda when you turn your head the big piece of black canvas is right at your face.
I adjusted to the
981
rear visibility within a day. I am driving on our famous gridlocked freeway of Southern California everyday, with the top up in the morning and top down on the way home, and loving it.
You should call Durametric and see if the Durametric Pro cable/software will allow you to program the top to raise/lower from the key fob.
Porsche
claimed they couldn't program my 11
Cayman
to raise/lower the windows from the key fob but it took an indie mechanic with the Durametric Pro software all of 10 minutes to do it.
Yep! Who said black is bad for convertible? ALL black for me!
I did hear another complaints about glare with beige interior. Don't see how you can fix it cheap though...
My 2012
Boxster S
has the beige interior, and, like you are experiencing, sunny weather brings a challenge in seeing through the heads up display of the dash vents. There is an easy factory solution that is reversible when selling the car. Order the plastic dash vent panels that snap in between the windshield and the dashboard in the black color from
Porsche
(not that expensive since they are just plastic...got them from
Suncoast
). Pull out the original beige and replace with the black. Looks attractive as if factory spec. Actually it should be, IMHO. When you sell the car, put the original beige panels back in. You can pull out the vent panels by putting your fingers into the vents. That part is easy. However, these panels are attached to the A pillar trim plates with a tab underneath, so be careful in twisting them apart. This is a little harder but you can do it (I did). If you cannot figure out how to detach the panels from the A pillar, go to a dealer who will know just what to do. Loving my beige interior now.
Sounds like you need one of these:
Did you have your dash mat custom made or did you find a company that has a pre made pattern? That is just what I need. Thanks for the pic.
Guys, dont you find that polarized sunglasses totally fix this problem?
Yes, polarized sunglasses do solve the glare problem but also can make seeing an LCD screen difficult. Probably depends on the LCD device. My Garman GPS unit is hard to read when I wear polarized glasses.
Actually, I saw that on an ebay auction for a gen 2 white Cayman S.
Porsche : Cayman 'S' PDK in Porsche | eBay Motors
You can try messaging the seller. I also searched for "carpet cayman dash cover"
And found a bunch of websites, here's one that I think it might be:
2006-2012 Porsche Cayman Dash Cover – Ltd. Edition 61783-00-25 - Black, Carpeted
That is, of course, the plan!
Guess you'll just have to order your car with rear assist sensors.
Too bad back up camera isn't an option.
I've got one on mine, it helps when backing up at the mall, etc... the fisheye style lens on it allows me to see all around.
Widman, did you try the above? Sounds like a potential good solution as it's the beige right and left forward air vents that are reflecting the most in the windshield, right? Seems to be such from looking at the below image. So if you swap those out for OEM black ones, perhaps that would be a big help and alleviate most of the issue? And for all of the glare that remains, just have some anti-glare window film installed on the windshield -- the stuff that is installed on retail storefront windows and will install on any window the same as window tint.
Covercraft said that they would have their pattern complete
next
week and have dash mats available in choice of material and color
next
week for the
981
. I am also waiting for one.
Those dash mats are just so wrong in so many ways in my eyes! It's the same as fitting one of those nasty bras on the front of your car, yes it fixes one thing, but then ruins so many other things! IMHO
Holy Krap! I never had this problem until I moved into an apartment for a temporary housing solution after selling our house. Everything is fine until I turn the corner to pull into the parking garage, then I am BLIND through the windshield. I can't believe how bad it is, yes I have the beige interior.
Today, I received a "Dashmat": a custom fitted, black velour cash cover for my
981
CB. LUXOR BEIGE INTERIOR OWNERS: TAKE NOTE!
This was a savior, virtually ELIMINATES the extremely annoying (and sometimes DANGEROUS) GLARE on the steep angled windshield on the
981
's! I am happily IMPRESSED!!! I think it works BETTER than the polarized sunglasses!
Now, I will remove it if I am showing the car at a car show or similar (easy to remove), but I think this black velour mat should be mandatory for driving on sunny days. The non-glare material is just what the doctor ordered!
I ordered it from the internet and it was less than $50. Worth every penny!
Oh, yes, it does look
tacky
a bit (depends on your point of view), but it is easily removed and thrown in the trunk if "perfectionists" like Dunebasher (BTW, I agree with you about the aesthetics!) show up!
There were several requests for images of the DashMat I purchased a few days ago. (If you own a
981
with a Luxor Beige interior, this black velour dash cover virtually eliminates the annoying and sometimes dangerous GLARE from the dash due to the steeply angled windshield.) Polarized Sunglasses helps too, but the sunglasses make it difficult to read the instruments and GPS! So here a few images. Notice the GLARE, without and with the dashmat!
Or you can limit your driving only in MOONLIGHT (see last image)!
A few owners have made claims for the glare. Plz email me w/your cell no for more info. Jos. Santoli
