Needing to refinish my switch covers I followed the excellent article by MCPorshe987S and developed a couple of new ideas in the process. I have added my notes to the original article here:
fan switch soft touch peel - repaint - Articles
Nice work and worthwhile addition to the articles section.
That is a great idea. This project is on my to do list. I was hoping to find some letter stickers but this looks much easier. I might just try a small straight line instead of the arrows. Thanks for posting.
I have a better solution. I just did not fix my hanging headliner so I can not see the knobs.
Interesting. How long before someone with a 3D printer starts cranking these out in black over clear?
mine is peeling due to the idiot at the dealer who was cleaning up the inside of the car and ended up leaving wax all over the place, some of which got on one of the buttons and as i was trying to remove it, started to peel. not real happy about it at all but this is a lot of work, may have to sharpie for now.
Refinished mine this weekend. I used Krylon Colormaster 51602 Flat Black. It is a perfect color/reflectivity match with the other buttons. I could not find Krylon Fusion Flat Black for plastic, so hopefully this doesn't flake off. I used about 4 or 5 coats. I found letter sticker sheets at Michael's and used the "T" to mask the line to leave unpainted, and then trimmed off the long part of the T. Worked well, although my Exacto knife skills could be better.
Both of these look great! I'm sure it took some effort getting the arrows aligned but that sure looks original. The straight line looks like an easier way to go.
I thought of using TEMP and FAN but couldn't find lettering that small so these both are great alternatives.
thanks for posting!
guess i'm the only one that just used googone to take off all the black and leave it white/blank...it's an interesting look and surely not for everyone but i like it a lot better than the peeling switch.
Would love to see pics.

Thanks Shooter. Looks better than I thought.
thanks, here's one more pic of it at night, a little fuzzy unfortunately but you get the idea.
I was looking into a reduced air flow out of the passenger side vent and found the duct partially disconnected. Since I had so much removed I decided to move on to the climate control module. After completing the repair I have to say it was quite a relief and fortunately I have a result that is far superior to the Porsche fail. I used a Valspar flat black paint and primer product. The most time consuming and probably worth while part of the work is in the preparation. I used 3M adhesive remover which I think started to chemically deteriorate the plastic. I spent considerable time cleaning out the horizontal grooves and then sanding with 1000, 1500 and 2000 grit paper to get a smooth surface. I applied four coats of paint, let them bake in the sun for about 6 hours and put it all back together. I don't have the indicator for Fan or Temp, but that's OK.
I did manage to fab a helpful tool for the switch lever removal. I cut a strip of drink can aluminum 1/4 x 3 inches and used it to help release the levers. Install the strip and move the lever to one end push the small white retainers through and then move the lever to the other extreme and push the other small retainers out. The lever should then fully release.
Just a quick tip there is a easy way to remove the actual switch and replace them.
