I’m only replacing the bank 1 tensioner which is positioned under the engine so yes, can be replaced with the engine in situ.

Whilst I took it pretty easy the car seemed to run pretty smooth but I did have a "check engine" light appear.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hi all, I'm finally getting close to getting my 06 Boxster S ready for inspection and registration. Took it for a sneaky drive around the back streets here tonight to get the engine up to temperature and plug in the iCarsoft Por2.0 and see what the car tells me. Whilst I took it pretty easy the car seemed to run pretty smooth but I did have a "check engine" light appear. Here is a link to a short video of the display from the Por2.0 showing bank 1 camshaft variation Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks, Julian

POST 2Original post

High enough Cam deviation readings could indicate chain stretch, deterioration of the chain guide rails and/or chain tensioner issues.

POST 3Original post

So after a bit of research and a couple of brave pills I decided to take off the sump and see what was sitting in the bottom of my sump. I was really hoping to not find bits of metal because that would be bad. None found. I was also hoping to not find a bunch of bits of plastic chain guide because that would mean I'd have to take out the engine etc etc.... None found, well actually 3 tiny tiny pieces. I'm now working on the theory that my bank 1-3 tensioner is/has failed so I'll be ordering one tomorrow (Marin Porsche had them for $96). I'm not sure if I can just take it out and poke in the new one though. I saw somewhere that it was thought toy need to lock the cams. That doesn't really make much sense to me but I'm not a mechanic. Has anyone else done this? Anything I should be aware of?

POST 4Original post

Can those tensioners be replaced with engine in the car?

POST 5Original post

I’m only replacing the bank 1 tensioner which is positioned under the engine so yes, can be replaced with the engine in situ. I have just picked up the new tensioner at lunchtime so will be installing this weekend and contrary to my previous post I will be locking the cam/engine at bank 1 TDC. Fingers crossed I’ve got this diagnosis right and everything is all good after this…. Stay tuned.
