When you approached another Porsche, its owner was most likely a fellow enthusiast (like on this site) who would readily acknowledge your unique common interest in an expensive, underpowered gem of a car - with a flash.

Now the customer base has split among those who see the car as a fashion accessory or life style statement (see their vanity plates….JUST KIDDING Chow) and those who admire and use the car for its performance attributes.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I will do it when I see a Cay. But I think during the first few months I won't see often a Cayman. in my country/fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/drive.gif
Most of the time, but in seven years of owning Porsches, I find most 'P' car owners are either too distracted or simply ignorant of the tradition to flash back. I hate to be sexist but women are the worst, in terms of no flash back.
Actually, yesterday I had one 911flash its lights, which I assumed was tradition. Then I was flashed by a minivan. I realized that I had my xenon
headlights
on (no brights) because it was raining, and thought that I was getting the reaction because of the brightness of the xenons as I experienced with my
Audi
.
From now on, I'll assume that a flash by a Porsche is from a traditionalist. And a flash from anyone else is from the uninformed.
Is it still OK to flash???
Noobie question! Not so long ago - well maybe a little while ago - Porsche drivers would flash their headlights when seeing an oncoming Porsche. Is this still the practice or is it limited to the model i.e., Carrerra, Cayman, etc.?
Just curious if this is still appropriate.

PCA members almost always do. Have you joined? By the way Welcome to the site. Us older guys remember the good old days don't we?
Being a Land Rover owner too, I am used to waving at (and getting waves back from) other Landie owners and I expected the same from the Porsche owners...
...how wrong I was. I wave and they look at me as if I'm mad.
Shame, as I feel the Porsche is an enthusiasts car and we need to stick together..
cheers (and Happy New Year)

Some 911s are owned by guys that just aren't into the comraderie of owning a fine sports car that will always be a classic, they just want the
status
of owning a fine sports car that will always be a classic. Boxter folks are
much
friendlier. Some Cayman folks I see on the road around here (DC area) are too busy on their cell phone to either flash or wave, so they jury is still out.
I don't see that many other P-cars where I live, but when I have, I have yet to have a wave returned. Very stange. Now Z4's and
s2000
.......they wave.
I just did a small test here in Southern California. This afternoon, after reading this post, I took a drive down Pacific Coast Highway from San Clemente through Dana Point to Newport Beach and back, adding a small lap around Newport Center (about 40 miles round trip).
It was a light traffic day, but I still crossed paths with 4 Boxters, 3
911s
, 5 911 Turbos (various vintages), 2 Cayennes, and 1 black Cayman with not a single returned flash. Not even the Cayman.
We need to work on this.
I also stopped at a light in Dana Point next to a pretty blond in a guards red base Cayman, but she did not seem interested in chatting even after I commented on her car (some things never change).
Edit: I failed to mention the Ferrari 360 and the Aston Martin that I passed along the way. I should also have added that I was flashed by a black 993 on Friday and it caught me off guard.
You encountered more Porsches in your short drive than I will see in all of 2007 around here except for PCA events. That may explain some of the unenthusiastic responses to acknowledging other Porsche drivers. Clearly encountering a fellow Porsche owner on a remote New Mexico mountain road will get more recognition than driving around Beverly Hills. Early on flashing the
headlights
was a way of demonstrating the shared enthusiasm
and
misery of Porsche ownership. Now the customer base has split among those who see the car as a fashion accessory or life style statement (see their vanity plates….JUST KIDDING Chow) and those who admire and use the car for its performance attributes. If the car is a fashion accessory then you would not like to see another one show up any more than a a lady would like to see another person in her expensive designer dress at a posh event. I’m not sure I want to even flash my headlights at the first group but hopefully some of them will be so taken with the ability of their Porsche they will become performance enthusiasts as well. Joining the PCA and participating in their events is a good way to preserve the common bond of ownership.

Santa Fe,
All good
points
, and certainly true here in SoCal. I like to think that I am in the enthusiast camp (club drives, AutoX, etc.), but I do have a "vanity" plate so I am note sure you will let me in the club.
Just kidding about the plate I hope you know.
And I'm old enough to remember the R&T list but to old to remember the details. Why did I get rid of those magazines. Oh, I do remember that. Spouse said lose 'em.
LOL. There's probably a thread like this on a 993 board with a post from some guy complaining that "those jerks who own Caymans never respond."
I usually try to acknowledge other P
cars
w/about a 50% response.

headlight flashing
I've noticed better than 50% response from other P-cars when I flash my headlights. A surprising number of 911 owners, actually. I think a lot of the Boxster owners are new to Porsche and don't know about the flashing. I really like it when one of my buddies is in the car with me and someone flashes and I get to tell them that "It's a Porsche thing".
SF LOL!
I used to save all my Dad's auto mags from 59 to 64, and then I moved to Hawaii and never saw them again. I think my Grandma threw them out when cleaning house/
RUss
Thought you might get a kick out this quote which comes from a 1961 book, Men at Speed by Kenneth Rudeen. It’s got a great collection of 3-4 page chapters about racing during that time period. Excellent “throne” book.
“And far from being considered odd, sports-car owners, whether they race or not, are envied for the air of verve that seems to cling to them.
Sports-car drivers wave greetings to one another as MG’s meet Triumph TR-3's, as Alfa Romeos meet Porsches, and so on. This tends to further separate them from other drivers. What Buick owner would wave to the man at the wheel of a Mercury? It is as through the sports-car driver belongs to an admirable secret fraternity whose pleasures are denied outsiders.”
BTW, I still wave at every sports-car I see. Old habits are hard to stop, even if they often wonder what's wrong with that guy.
Don't get flashed much either, but make an effort to do so, especially when I see a Cayman.
I do have to disagree about women when they're driving boxsters, I mean they are driving topless most of the time, not sure what else you could ask for :hilarious:
Agreed...I remember when any other sports car would flash their lights...late 60's to early 70's...it was a time when the foreign car craze started...I still do...most 911 are too occupied with themselves:crazy:...Caymans & Boxsters always flash back...
I remember that. Especially in the 60s there were few on the road. They were expensive without the cachet of today. When you approached another Porsche, its owner was most likely a fellow enthusiast (like on this site) who would readily acknowledge your unique common interest in an expensive, underpowered gem of a car - with a flash. Not a meaningful practice today and, as stated above, too many other variables.
