For my 2013 Cayenne base model, I bought a dipstick and use it to check oil level.
Leading evidence: 'Check oil level' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check oil level' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I would change my oil rather than live with it reading max.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This may be a dumb question. I don’t like the “no dipstick” method of monitoring oil level. If I’m down one bar, or two in a cold engine, how much oil is required to bring it up one bar at a time? I don’t think it’s much. Forgive me, but I’m old school. Ni will be tracking the car in DE atWatkins Glen in 3 weeks, and want to make sure I get it right. Thanks.
Honestly, I would never add oil based on a single reading of the 987 gauge.
I say that because I can get a different reading from morning to morning, or in the afternoon after a short cool down, all parked in exactly the same place.
I've learned to just breathe as long as I'm 1-3 bars BELOW Max.
Max will drive me nuts because I can't tell by how much? Am I getting fuel dilution? I would change my oil rather than live with it reading max.
I think the only thing that would have me adding oil is if I consistently read MORE than 2 bars below max. By consistent, I mean every single drive for a few days in a row.

I HATE the system. I too will get different readings all the time. And by that I mean........the car in the same spot, read it on Monday. Do not start or drive the car, check it again on Wed and get a different reading. It drives me nuts. The reading should be exactly the same.
I have heard that it can only read at each bar. Meaning that if it is even a tiny bit below a level to read at a bar it will read the
next
one down. Or if the level is just above a bar it will read up to the
next
one. It will not read between bars. It needs to read at a bar. So it adjusts the reading up or down to do this. I have no idea if this is true!!! Give me a dip stick, please.
If you check oil right off of the track is normally reads 1 bar low for me, if I check right before the
next
session on a flat surface the reading is more accurate, I like mine right in the middle, after about 500 track miles it is not uncommon for me to add 1/4 or 1/3 of a quart.
Mine 2.7 is always one below max sometimes if I go like shopping and re start car for short runs it will read mid or max depend and if I let the car sit 2 week it will be at max lol.
I am like you; I do not trust digital stuff. For my 2013 Cayenne base model, I bought a dipstick and use it to check oil level.
Porsche
does not sell it, but in my case it is available for Audis and VWs that use the same engine (3.6 L, V6). You may be able to buy a dipstick for your vehicle if any Audi or VW models use the same engine.
The other day I was surprised that it game me a reading with the car running. I was actually driving down the road about 30 minutes into a drive. Was very surprised it gave me a reading.
Mitch 987, Be careful on high g turns without the deep sump/windage plate and baffles, you do not have an oil pressure gauge or oil temp gauge. So, the best thing is to take it a little easy on those type of turns. After you install the deep sump, think about either a couple of OEM AOS's in your spare parts kit or spring for
Porsche 987
motorsports AOS. The weak points of the M97 engine are oil starvation, oil overheating and oil sloshing up the walls of the sump being vacuumed into the bottom of the AOS. Big cloud of blue smoke which means a broken vacuum membrane in the AOS. Replacement necessary as too much oil in the top of the combustion chamber could cause a broken ring. Sometime you can clear the AOS, but it's a time bomb after the first wash down. The sticker the tire compound, the more G loading which ups the risk of oil starvation, so just be mindful as the engine replacement is around $12-15k depending.
Only the 987 and 997 use the M97 engine.
No Audi or VW models use a flat six. (If it was a 718 Cayman we were discussing you could always check with Subaru
)
AFAIK it will give you a reading unless you have opened the trunk. The reading will be the last reading it took which will be 60 seconds after the last time you shut the car off. It isn’t an instantaneous reading.
If you open the trunk it doesn’t know if you’ve added oil or not so it won’t give you a reading until 60 seconds after the next time you turn the car off. But after that it will give you that same reading anytime you ask it.
