Not lucky, I bought it from Sport and Classic, a respected indie who also sell the odd car, so it had been impeccably prepped - it also had bills for a gearbox rebuild (by them) and the turbos replaced (by 9E)

I guess I would rather not go driving cars which I think are not going to be popular in the longer run (hence asking for feedback from people with more experience/knowledge) - as I'd rather not see my 50-60K plummet to 30-40K in a few years and wish I had bought a different model which held its value better.

A newbie to Porsches here. Been lurking Autotrader watching prices rise. First focused on manuals but when I think of it, for my personal needs, I'd drive an automatic much more often than a manual. I'm looking to buy a car to use and enjoy, not keep in the garage. Prices for 997.2s seem to be very strong - although the PDKs seem relatively cheaper because of the higher number. But for another 10K additional one can get a 997.1 Turbo but in Tiptronic. Seen a Jayemm video + comments recently suggesting the Turbo in Tip is pretty decent. Anyone lived with one? Would the upgrades of the 997.2 outweigh the performance etc of the 997.1 Turbo in terms of driving enjoyment? Its all personal I know, but appreciate your views, especially if you have owned one. It's a big chunk of money, hard to part with it!

This is one I have seen online locally - dealer bought it from auction, which raises a question https://www.laburnummotorcompany.co.uk/used-cars/p...

POST 4Original post

At that price I'd only buy from a specialist, safe in the knowledge they've went through it with a fine tooth comb and will put a decent warranty behind it, not some aftermarket one. Looks more worn than it's mileage would suggest in some of those pics. I don't mean it's been clocked, but it doesn't look particularly well cared for. Might just be the pics. History is everything!

Yeah fair point. It's so hard finding 911s that have been looked after. Even ones at the specialists, when you look up the MOT history, they will have fails for all sorts of reasons suggesting premature wear and tear along the way. Have access through a mate to a software that gives me details of prior MOT fails, so with 4-5 owners, hard to cover up.

But those who own it often seem to praise it.

I do like the truffle brown interior on these 10+ year old cars as they have gained some patina. New brown looks odd to me, worn in brown looks great in my opinion. Yep that one reads good. but, even though its got a deposit on it, i would enquire on this one... https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/listing/9442719 ....with buckets, less miles, great reputed dealer, and just that bit better for less than £10% more...even if gone (but check) you can use that as a benchmark.

POST 24Original post

my tuppence worth: Tiptronic is fine with the Turbo engine. I'd prefer the .2 2S PDK myself, but a 997 Turbo Tip is a mighty fine car! I wouldn't touch the one from Laburnum tough! As has been said, at that price point I'd only buy from a specialist. The following things are a red flag, imho: - the red 'S' badge - there is no 997.1 Turbo S and the 'S' badge on the 997.2 is not red - red tinted rear lights - air refresher - non OEM, badly painted, 20" wheels - non OEM radio, albeit a quality one - stone chips and wear on side bolster is more than I would expect for 33k miles - air refresher - the dealers homepage - the way the ad is written - 14 year old but only "6 SERVICE STAMPS! 3 Porsche MAIN DEALER STAMPS!" - "Invoices and Plenty of MAINTENANCE PAPERWORK totalling (sic!) over £6,000+." £6k is nothing, considering this is a 14 y.o. Turbo. - air refresher Edited by Filibuster on Thursday 24th February 09:52

The earlier ZF tiptronic unit was no longer fitted to the N/A Carreras after the 2001 3.6 facelift. The Tiptronics really seem to divide opinion, so while I think I probably would be happy with one (if I didn't go around comparing it to a PDK) - I feel the values of these will not hold well in the longer term because of the sentiment about them. I'm not buying a car for investment but I just don't want to wipe away my savings! I think with nice Tiptronic Turbos now in the 60K region, it is seeming like a 997.2 GTS would be a better buy at this price level.

Turbo. - air refresher Edited by Filibuster on Thursday 24th February 09:52 These are some great observations mate, I noticed the same things myself and went cold on this one yesterday after exchanging a few posts on the forum. Another thing is the dealer has bought it from auction and told me it has a NAMA score of 1 - to me instead of being a good sign, this was a bad sign, as if it was a good car, why sell it through dealer auction...and why would a dealer who has mostly cheaper cars on their books have this on.

OP go drive some and workout what you prefer rather than listening to people on the internet. Ignore….pretty typical of his posts… OP, you’d get more interaction from a NA 997 GTS than a Turbo from my experience, however you may fall for the massive shove the Turbo cars provide. PDK is definitely a huge improvement over Tiptronic, the Tip seems like it’s from a bygone era compared to PDK. Definitely drive a few before you decide, it’s a big decision and nothing will beat having a go in them to compare. They’re very different.

I guess I would rather not go driving cars which I think are not going to be popular in the longer run (hence asking for feedback from people with more experience/knowledge) - as I'd rather not see my 50-60K plummet to 30-40K in a few years and wish I had bought a different model which held its value better. Again it is not about investment, it just means if I squander this away, it will be a while before I can buy another nice car!

julian987R said: ah so manual is an option for you then. That one looks very nice. This one is sold. I spoke to one which is a private sale on autotrader. Nice chap but he had done some maintenance of his own to the car like changing coils and plugs and a couple of electrics etc - and the MOT despite being a pass noted corrosion to the brake pipe. Has been on the market for a while too. Despite being a manual, makes me think something must be scaring away buyers.

I have a 997.1 Turbo with tiptronic...it's a great car Personally I prefer the look of the 997 It's fast enough for me and has everything I wanted Good value for what you get No issues for me having the tiptronic it's not a track car and driving it is a pleasure Feels really solid on the road in all conditions Insurance isn't horrendous either Fuel tank capacity is a bit small but not a major issue But, as said above, go and drive some Afterall deciding what Porsche you want is a good thing

POST 32Original post

No one knows for sure of course, but from historical price trends, you won't take a bath on a 997 GTS or Turbo unless you either pile on the miles or have some major mechanical problems. Take out the dealer margin and they're probably nearly depreciation proof (ish) at this age / price point. The Turbo will cost more in maintenance, but for what you get, compared to other marques I think they're pretty low on cost to run. 911's are great sports cars, they definitely get under your skin pretty quickly. Have fun in your search, all part of the experience.

Appreciate that feedback thanks! Anything vital one should have on a GTS ? There are three all on at 60K Anything you fancy. But for resale alcantara and centre locks.

It is interesting how the retail price of a PDK/Tiptronic (depends on your luck) original 110K+ options 2010 Turbo is now at a similar level of £60K-65K to a 2011 GTS which was originally around 85K+options - both with 60-70K miles on the clock.

Yeah thats fair enough however everyones opinions on how cars drive and excitement differs. Its about how a car makes you 'feel'. Someone coming from a Ford Fiesta moving into a 997 turbo tip would think its incredible - someone coming from a 991.2 Turbo S would tell you very different. Thats why its important for you to experience it and make your own opinion. I understand no one wants to through money away - how ever loosing 10-20k on a Porsche (most models) is something that used to occur alot years ago - the skewed market currently is giving off a warm feeling of if i buy right i wont loose money, it cant last forever. Try and get in a few cars and see how you feel about them, if you buy right you wont loose 'lots' of money on a tiptronic turbo.

How have you found the maintenance? Prior to picking it up the car had been fully inspected and gone through and all issues that I found and the dealer found were corrected. It was also serviced with additional brake fluid and transnission fluid change. Actuators were replaced and cosmetic fixes done i.e the rubber front lip the car bodywork was also detailed. The interior has the carbon pack and extended leather option so easy to keep in good condition. So it's pretty much sorted until next service unless something gives up but it was supplied with a comprehensive warranty. I'm using it as much as possible and have not been disappointed. If I want to stir gears I have a 3.2 Carrera which is a completely different drive, sound and smell LOL! I didn't buy the 997 for investment so expect to lose money. I wanted a turbo 911 but an aircooled 930 was a step too far on the wallet and I personally think the 997 is more "practical" day to day. Take a look at Mortimers Prestige website. It's where I got mine from and it was a pleasure to deal with them. Sorry what was the question?...LOL!

Out of interest at what mileage levels do good cars start becoming a concern? Like is there a steep dropoff in the price after say 70/80K miles on a desirable Turbo or GTS?

I have a very sensitive nose and the smell of cars cabin leaves a very firm first Impression. A neutral odeur, or maybe the connolly leather, is how a car should smell. The smell of air fresheners always remind me of the smell of a mini cab where the driver has smoked while driving and the last passenger was drunk, eating a kebap and then vomiting said kebap with a Friday nights worth of beer onto the seats. Without wanting to step on anybodies toes, but a gentleman doesn't use an air freshener!

Scrump said: The Mercedes tiptronic unit was also used in the N/A cars at the same time it was used in the turbo cars. The earlier ZF tiptronic unit was no longer fitted to the N/A Carreras after the 2001 3.6 facelift. Thanks for the clarification - I should be more careful making sweeping statements. My friend had the early ZF unit and I drove it a few times.

hrp123 said: Yeah true, just intimidating for a first buy given the additional issues to watch for No additional issues on a 996 turbo unless you simply mean that as an older car there can be more to fail, which I can understand - it's pretty much exactly the same engine as a 997.1 turbo and the rest of it is even simpler - on both 996 and 997 they are at the age where replacement turbos are needed. I'd have a close look at the service history of anything you buy - a 996 that's had its turbos replaced is a good buy. I won't say bulletproof as the gearbox can go, as it can for the 997, but it seems to be pretty rare

Haha - I've found with used cars I sometimes need to initially neutralise the prior gentlemans odours with something like an Autoglym or Gtechniq spray. Don't get me thinking of all the unpleasant things that could have happened in a 10 year old car before I buy it.

They are 100K cars and with that comes the chance of 100K car bills! Hence I'd say broad advice is buy from a specialist and get a decent warranty on the expensive bits! Not sure on 997.2 turbos as they used the more modern DFI engine.... My 996 turbo has been a model of reliability since I bought it 2.5 years ago

Interetsing that quite a few have notes of corrosion around brake pipes too in MOTs, although not a fail.

Not lucky, I bought it from Sport and Classic, a respected indie who also sell the odd car, so it had been impeccably prepped - it also had bills for a gearbox rebuild (by them) and the turbos replaced (by 9E) Hence earlier advice that if buying a car like a 911 turbo, buy it from someone that knows what they are selling!!
