Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Reported cause
I was under the impression that it was the latter.
Leading evidence: 'latter' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'latter' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Fill " and now' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Mobil 1 has a "new" (USA) 0W-40 which is the current "factory fill" and now used by Porsche for oil changes.

I just took delivery of an '02 C2 and the owner's manual recommends 15W50 in areas where the ambient temperature is 50 deg., this is the same as was recommended for my '99 C2

Same price per quart as 15-50 (the previous usual Porsche oil change weight).

Suggestion
On oil weights, (but not necessarily tire pressures) I think I'd follow the recommendation in the owner's manual; sticking with Mobil 1 and trying to figure out which weight range to use by considering my local ambient temperature range and how I'd be using the car.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm about to become a proud owner of a 2000 C2. It has 3700 miles on it and I would like to start our relationship with a fresh oil change. I've been told to use 5-50 Mobil One synthetic. I would appreciate all comments and opinions. Also, if anyone knows of a reputable independent porsche shop in the SF Bay Area, info on that is welcomed as well.
I didn't even know there was a Mobil 1 in 5-50 weight. I've been using 15-50 for years, but now they have weight ranges I don't know much about (e.g., 0-30). When I read the back of the container, they all seem to say about the same thing. On oil weights, (but not necessarily tire pressures) I think I'd follow the recommendation in the owner's manual; sticking with Mobil 1 and trying to figure out which weight range to use by considering my local ambient temperature range and how I'd be using the car. If there really is a 5-50, it sounds perfect for a wide range of conditions.
Mobil 1 has a "new" (USA) 0W-40 which is the current "factory fill" and now used by Porsche for oil changes. You can buy from your nearest Mobil 1 "jobber" (wholesaler) as I have not seen this weight sold retail. Same price per quart as 15-50 (the previous usual Porsche oil change weight). Van

Viken: Am advised that the Mobil 1 0W-40 is for non and turbo new engines. The Mobil 1 0w-40 bottle has "for European autos" and meets a specific Mercedes rating. The local P-car dealerships in Chicago are installing this on oil changes. If I recall, before Porsche and Mobil hooked up, the factory fill was a 5W-40 Shell synthetic only available in Europe. I'm doing a change this weekend--visually, it's quite "runny"--definitely thinner than 15-50--may help early cold start valve gear "chatter." Van
