A few weeks ago, I changed the oil in my 2002 C2 coupe.

Fill with 9 qts Mobil 1 0W-40 ( factory fill now - not 15W-50).

Will probably need to add another 1/4 to 1/2 qt to fill all the way to top bar on dash read out after you let the oil level set overnight.

I know with those of us in Potomac that, given adequate number of lifts during our tech sessions for our driver's ed events, we allow owner's with tasks that do not require a great deal of time to use a lift.

Maybe its my NAME....I am small town doctor- looking for advice on chaging the oil...and maybe some input with others on the BROKEN parts on my 2001-

For a 996 , you need an 8mm allen head hex bit to open the drain plug and proper fitting filter cap wrench ( Porsche sells one also) to remove the screw on hard plastic "cup" that holds the oil filter insert. Drain until oil drips a drop at a time slowly. Filter insert just pulls off/pushes on over a "nipple" . Oil filter insert comes with new gasket for the "cup". You also need a new aluminum gasket ring for the drain plug . Fill with 9 qts Mobil 1 0W-40 ( factory fill now - not 15W-50). Will probably need to add another 1/4 to 1/2 qt to fill all the way to top bar on dash read out after you let the oil level set overnight. TQ the plug at 37 ft-lbs. TQ the "cup" to 19 ft-lbs ( actually you screw it back on ALL the way until it seats with the flange).
Find a new dealer. All of your problems should have been fixed under warranty with no problem. The dealer gets paid either way, so the fact that he tried to quibble over the broken seat just shows what a moron he is.
I haven't heard of broken spoilers on 996's but you didn't really describe the problem very well, so it's hard to say if others have had the problem or not. Do you have a stock spoiler or aerokit? What broke?

and specifically, the 996 forum. If you search the archives, you will find a some informative posts regarding oil changes. Also, go to their 911 turbo forum and you will find some good posts on how to find the 0W-40 Mobil 1. These places provide better information than I could in a single post.
A few weeks ago, I changed the oil in my 2002 C2 coupe. It was surprisingly easy. I think the hardest thing was getting under the car (or lifting it properly to get some clearance) and finding the "right" oil.
There's more than one way to do it but, MKW's post is very accurate.

One of the best ways you can learn and work on your car is to join your local PCA chapter. I know with those of us in Potomac that, given adequate number of lifts during our tech sessions for our driver's ed events, we allow owner's with tasks that do not require a great deal of time to use a lift. Also, there are always a bunch of folks there who are happy to lend a hand. Oil changes, brake pad changes, brake bleeding, etc. All good candidates for the 20 to 30 minute work times preferred. If you are nearby DC, look us up at pcapotmoac.org. If you are elsewhere, our board has links to other club sites.
Remember, if you are going to do some work, come prepared with the basic tools and be ready to put up with some kabizing has you do your task.
I thought I read a Bruce Anderson response in Excellence where he stated our cars have two different oil filters. One in the rear and one up front. Am I mistaken?
