Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. one wonders why you pay those permium prices for the dealership when they couldn't even diagnose what turned out to be a very simple issue...
Leading evidence: 'very simple issue' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'very simple issue' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check received wisdom points' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Based on this and other advice I replaced the drop links which at the time I thought cured the issue.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Have had drop links, top mounts all done and no change.
A little while ago I posted a thread regarding a front suspension rattle I had on my Turbo. Based on this and other advice I replaced the drop links which at the time I thought cured the issue. What I've noticed is that a rattle still remains and the wierd thing is that it appears to be temperature related. By this I don't mean vehicle operating temperature, but outside temperature. We're just comming out of Summer and as the temperatures begin to drop it's more noticable. What I found was above 22-24 degrees celcius it essentially disappeared, while below it became evident. And tonight driving home at 10 degrees it was blatently obvious... any thoughts what to look at next?
Kiwi
Top mount bearings - only about £25 each
To diagnose, open boot (front), remove battery cover and the plastics at either side so the front suspension housings are now exposed.
On either housing you will see a Black 2"(ish) round plastic cap. Pop these out to expose the top nut of the shock absorber.
Now, climb into boot so that you are now standing in the boot making it easy for you to bounce the front end.
While you are bouncing place a finger on the S.ABS nut and the other on the housing (you are sensing for slight knocking)
I bet my last dollar thats what your problem is.

Kiwi might have a bit of a problem there
And I would never bet my last dollar on diagnosing a 996 suspension noise!! You are a braver man than me! :worship:
It's OK if your cash is in £ and € and you only have a couple of $s left over from a trip! (I suspect very carefully worded)
Hopefully Kiwi and get someone else to do the actual bouncing. Other Kiwis seem quite good at bouncing. Anything over 7 stories high seems to have rubber rope attached so they can bungey.
Don't worry I won't take you up on your bet... I just appreciate the advice... although I do feel other members might be game to accept
Yep I'll have to get somebody to give me a hand trying this, as I don't think I'll have a huge amount of success getting into the bonet with my chair and bouncing around...
But on a more positive note it's great to see the car performing and boosting higher with the cooler temps...
Good luck, I'm still trying to get rid of a squeak. Control arms, top mount bearings and anti roll bar bushes done, drop links on my workbench awaiting install. Could also be the forked control arms, not much else you can replace after that.
And after this lot, the dampers themselves next on the list in my experience (actually that was a knock rather than a squeak).
Good luck Kiwi, we've all been there, got the t-shirt (and forked over a fair bit of cash in the process!).
I have a Mercedes aswell which I spent over $2k on trying to solve a suspension rattle through the local MB dealership (numerous times) and other places over the space of 18 months.
Finally took it to a specialist alignment and suspension company who thought the shocks might have air in them. They removed them and beld them. Took them 15 minutes, cost $40 and fixed instantly. It would appear that at some point in time sombody had the shocks out while doing some work on the car and left them lying on their sides for a while...
What annoyed me thoe was that not one of the so call specialists including the offical dealership even bothered to consider or try this, given the solution was so simple... one wonders why you pay those permium prices for the dealership when they couldn't even diagnose what turned out to be a very simple issue...
I have had a similar issue for the last 18months! After much deliberation and checking received wisdom points to the steering rack. All other components in the chain are fine and have been examined.
Always when the road surface is consistently uneven there is a noticeable rattle.
Have had drop links, top mounts all done and no change. Had the steering gaiters grease packed and that sorted it for about 10mins so theres my problem, maybe you may have something rack related?
If you grab the front alloy and push it violently back and forth can you detect a rattle?

Something I have noticed on all the Porsches I have owned, when the front is jacked up, sway the car and you can hear what sounds like a ball - bearing rolling about in a tray... hard to describe, totally baffled and never pinned where the noise comes from.
I have a similar problem. The best way I can describe the noise which comes after about 15-20 minutes of driving is like someone jumping on an old spring bed - or the sound of an old spring-closing door.
It is actually quite embarrassing in heavy traffic on the high street as it seems to happen at lower speeds - cant be heard (or maybe it doesn't happen?) at higher speeds. People just stare at the squeaking car!
Gut instinct tells me it is a spring - purely from the sound and the way it squeaks in time with the dips in the road. And the fact the noise starts when the car warms up (warming the spring - making it more bouncy?)...I would love to fix this before I start taking the roof down!
Any thoughts?

Okay update, had the car in today for a WOF with my friendly local mechanic. What we noticed is that the rubber hats at the top of the shocks looked nackered. I priced up the parts from the dealership and they're indicating around 300 pounds for the top hat bits and 70 pounds for the bearing things, per side parts only... What's the thinking on this, and what I've found on the inspection... It's not that I don't mind spending the money to fix it, I just don't want to spend money needlessly... Cheers Kiwi
