I ordered and received an additional set of
Cayman S
Wheels from
Porsche
(for track use). Today I weighed them (without tires), as a few people were wondering how light they are. Both the front and rear tires weigh the same, right at 24 pounds each. I would have thought that the rear would weigh more, being an inch wider. Wheels are manufactured by Ronal in Germany. Part numbers as follows:
Front (8 inch) - 987-362-136-01 Rear (9 inch) - 987-362-138-01. They are available either through your dealer or through Wheel Enhancement.
Porsche
LIST price for the set is $ 3,600.00 Wheel Enhancement price for the set is $ 2500.00. Same wheels.
Rick, Thanks for this information. And to be clear, the wheels weigh 24 pounds, correct?
And, what kind of tires are you going to use for the track?
24lbs isn't bad considering that the 996 Turbo wheels weighed around that and they were hollow-spokes. So what tires are you going to put on these wheels for track use?
I'm planning on using the Pilot Sport Cups. Unfortunately, while
Michelin
makes the 235-40 for the front, they DON'T make the 265-40 for the rear, so I'm thinking about using the 265-35 for the rear. The difference in the 2 rear sizes cause a 3.8 % change in diameter, which I hope is minimal enough to not impact the ABS. Most people I have asked feel that it should be OK, but none can say with certainty.
Sorry mpollard, I forget to answer your question. Yes, they weigh 24 pounds EACH.
Rick - good info, thanks. That'll mean mounted w/PSC = 46F & 48R. BTW, using the /35 rear saves about 2# of tire weight.
I'm following you (at a safe distance) so I'm very interested in what you think about the choice of MPSC. Although, at this point I plan to finish the season (I've deferred my car 'til mid summer) on the street tires for an easier learning environment.
For comparison, the 8x18 hollow spoke Technology is 20# & the 8x18 '02
Carrera
5 spoke is 20.5#.
I assume the reason your F&R are the same despite the wider rear width is that the added rim width is a wash with the reduced hub material for the offset change.
Here is some comparison info:

Sport Design
8x19' 24 lbs. 3

9.5x19' 26 lbs. 13

I predicted while back that the
Cayman S
will be very light and looks like they are they might be, but it still would be nice to have the total weight with
Michelin
PS2 tires.
I like the look of the 18' - I just wish they would offer them in 19' /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/teeth_smile.gif

Euroboy:
Do you have weights for the
Carrera
Classica at 8 X 19 and 9.5X 19?
Thanks,
JHellow
Sorry I don't, but it would be very interesting to see. I think the important comparison is wheels with tires - on 19' wheels the amount of rubber should be lower ( as both have the same width but different profile ) - total weights were just posted for the 18' - I hope some numbers will show up for the 19'
Questions for K-man S - the Booth brother's center cup uses the
Porsche
hood emblem - is it covered with something to prevent dirt collecting in them, or this is non issue ? You talked about their shape and the fit on the 18' - would their shape work as well on the 19' ?
You can get the weights of the
Michelin
PS2 in various sizes on
TireRack's website
.

Thanks for the info - looks like 18' compared to 19' SD are lighter in the back and heavier in the front - very interesting - any practical implications of the results ?
Non issue, dirt didn't collect there and they have a coating on them so I just washed stuff off and it was fine, no different from the OEM caps in that respect.
Boothe caps fit the 18 or 19' wheels, the holes in the center are still the same...
K-man S - in one of your posts you stated that the shape of the Booth cap fitted 18' nicely because of their shape and the shape of the 18' wheel - ie. I was not asking about the openning size but about the relation between the shape of the cap and and the shape of the wheel - I know this might be a hard one for you to answer, as I suspect you have not looked at the 19' in great detail. When I visit the dealer I will try to visualize the Booth cap on the SD wheel.
Apologies for the confusion, but since I had 19' Sport Designs on my 2005
Boxster S
I can say that I think the Boothe caps would look good on those as well, but that comes down to personal taste. Factory caps are either flush or slightly concave whereas Boothe caps although flush appear slightly convex because of the larger shield. I think that slighly convex look is great on the standard 18'
Cayman S
wheels, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't look good on other wheels too, I think it would.
