I spoke with a representative at Tirerack and, based on that discussion, and subject to a little more digging, I'm leaning towards replacing all 4 Continental tires with Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Position tires.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The rear tires on my '99 C4 (only 10,000 miles) are virtually bald - the fronts have about 30% left. (I was surprised at how quickly the tires wore out). My current tires are the 18" Continentals which came with the car in '99. I'm planning to replace all four tires and am looking for advice as to whether to replace them with new Continentals or perhaps switch to Pzeros or Michelins (or others). (Should I consider replacing only the rears and runing the fronts down for another season? - My instinct is no). I don't track the car, though I do autocross, occassionally (2 to 3 times a year). Its a daily driver for me and my driving style is aggressive (but responsible). Starting with this season, I plan to use Michelin Alpin Pilot 17" tires (17" rims) during the winter for better traction, which should save some life annually with the new summer tires. If you know, what are the pros and cons of the various 18" tires available for consideration for my C4?

POST 2Original post

Brian: I think your instinct is correct on this one. With 30% remaining on the fronts, it's time to replace at both ends. I suggest that you go to tirerack.com and read the comparison tests and reviews of the tires in whatever tire category you want to buy into. The most expensive are the "maximum performance" tires, with "ultra high performance" being significantly cheaper. You can also call Tire Rack and talk to someone. They'll need to know how you intend to use your car, and what kinds of compromises (re ride, noise, wear, grip, etc) you prefer. They can help you select a tire you'll be happy with. They don't care what you buy because they sell them all. Usual disclaimer that I'm not affiliated with Tire Rack. [Deja Vue: I could swear I wrote the very same words yesterday]

POST 3Original post

Dear Brian: I had a 1999 C2 that came with Michelin Pilots from the factory that wore quite well. The rears lasted for 30k mi. and the fronts for about 50k. in daily driving in NYC. My new MY '02 came with Continental SportContacts but I noticed on the Tire Rack website that the comments were very negative in terms of tire wear with one Porsche owner reporting he had to replace at 6,700 mi. I do think that if you decide to switch brands that you'll have to replace all four

POST 4Original post

The Continental Sport Contacts are no longer made. They have been replaced by the new and differently constructed Sport Contact 2. It's one of 3 OEM N-rated 18" tires approved by Porsche for the '02 996 and Twin Turbos. Problem is, I don't know if there is an N-rated 265 width for '99-'01 C2s yet - the '02s come with 285s in the rear . Supposedly the newer Conti is more aggressive , less comfort oriented , but that could just be marketing.

POST 5Original post

Hello,I just replaced my tires with Bridgestone SO-3's and they are great. Quiet, very responsive and the price was just reduced by the Rack! Good luck.

POST 6Original post

MKW is correct, the new '02's are coming in with Contact Sport 2's. The ride is harder than on the earlier 996's but I can't tell if that's because of the tires or the stiffer chassis that the new cars have.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the replies and good suggestions. I spoke with a representative at Tirerack and, based on that discussion, and subject to a little more digging, I'm leaning towards replacing all 4 Continental tires with Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Position tires. The 3 tires still in the running are the S-03s, Michelin Pilot Sports and Pirelli Pzero Roso Asimmetricos.

POST 8Original post

I just got rid of the OEM Conti's before they wore out because they were awful. I replaced them with the Bridgestone S-03's and so far they are just as good as the S-02's which were the best ones available IMO. The ride is a bit harder but grip is all that matters. Carlos from Spain 996 C4

POST 9Original post

All three are good tires and I suspect each has it proponents. A tire test run earlier this year in Pano showed the Michelin Pilot Sports to be superior to the Pirelli P Zero C's, which I believe the Rosso's are a replacement for. They did not include the S-03s in the test. Karl

POST 10Original post

No need to wait for me. I have had the pleasure of using almost all the tires mentioned here at my previous job at a high end performance shop. I would run tires hard because replacements were relatively inexpensive and readily available. Out of all the tires, I have had very good experence with Bridgestone so-2's. I am no longer in that line of work rather an engineer job in telecommunications. I have to pay full price for tires now. But I still went for the top of the line Bridgestone tire the new so-3. My rears are almost gone and after I saw what the stock tires were going for in relation to performance of that tire I figured it for a joke! Tire rack dropped off both front and rear sets of bridgestone so-3's this afternoon. I'll let you guys now how they handle soon enough Just my 2 cents

POST 11Original post

Karl, The P-Zero "C" was an R-compound DOT approved race tire (now discontinued). The tire test in Pano included this and Michelin's new Pilot Sport "Cup" along with BFG's g-Force RA1. These are not conventional street tires and cannot compare with those beeing discussed in this thread.
