I ended up changing my priorities and buying a 996 (not because of the tax, but the tax made me look at them again and realise it was 911 now or never).

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have my 987 Cayman S up for a very reasonable £16250 but I'm not getting any interest? Is the market just very slow for these right now?

POST 2Original post

most people go for the dfi cars now, Porsches sweet spot and bomb proof engines. 10 year old run of the mil cars are a hard sell.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

2007, 5825mls0, pretty good spec, Bose, PASM, etc. The ad' is on the Classifieds.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes, I think you're right. Will reduce it.

POST 5Original post

Its always only ever about the price. ANY car will sell at the right price.

POST 6Original post

But remember its VERY easy to sell a car too cheap.... Just paid £12,500 for a well spec'ed 2007 2.7, which I think is about right.

POST 7Original post

On the flip-side its nearly impossible to sell a cheap car. Listed my old skip/shed last week (a '99 Passat estate with MOT, no big issues) for £300 - no takers.

POST 9Original post

the £500 tax has killed the cheap end of the market on sales, cmoose will say not, but people with £15k to spend will not pay out £500 to tax it. I think new rules come back in 2017 for older cars and flat rates which might boost 987.1 2006 to 2009 Cayman S sales again.

I think new rules come back in 2017 for older cars and flat rates which might boost 987.1 2006 to 2009 Cayman S sales again. Do the 2017 rules make any difference to cars registered before April 2017? My understanding is that they don't, but perhaps I got that wrong. My 2005 Boxster S gets the exemption from the last change, and I do think it would make a bit of difference if I was going to sell it. £280 is a little more acceptable than £490 as these cars start to hit the £10k mark. Going down to the £140 flat rate would be welcome! The new scheme is a massive disincentive to buy a new car at £40k+, so it will be interesting to see what that does to the market for these cars going forward.

POST 11Original post

Does anyone seriously NOT buy a Porsche because the road tax is £490 instead of £280! That's 3 tanks of fuel in difference over the year (not to mention all the other associated costs with running a Porsche).

river_rat said: Does anyone seriously NOT buy a Porsche because the road tax is £490 instead of £280! That's 3 tanks of fuel in difference over the year (not to mention all the other associated costs with running a Porsche). Yes but from a point of principal rather than the difference in cost. We're asked to pay more for a car that will be used a lot less than a daily driver and therefore will emit less greenhouse gases over a given period of time than a lower emitting, lower taxed car. We all know that little, if any, of the revenue raised goes back into the roads or to pay for other ways of reducing emissions. Therefore it's simply a stealth tax.

That's 3 tanks of fuel in difference over the year (not to mention all the other associated costs with running a Porsche). I would have thought that it might sway some people. Looking at it properly as you have, it is pretty much irrelevant, but I look at it as getting all of my servicing for free in comparison to having a 2006 or newer car. Certainly, the new tax rates adds to the case against me replacing mine with a new one. Tax increase from £280 to £450, pus a big hit in the first year, depreciation up from £1,500 to £8-10,000, servicing cost doubles, insurance probably goes up significantly as well.

I've been making this point for some time now but usually get shouted-down by the 'run it on a shoestring' brigade.

Still a lot of sports car for £15k though?

It's £41 a month it's a massive halt on car prices which fall into this bracket we saw it with V6 clios and Z4m etc although the Clio made a come back. people with £10k don't fork out £41 a month just for tax.

POST 19Original post

I do wonder how many non enthusiasts even know about the step in tax, and if a car is a tick box item owned for a shortish time frame people are less likely to care anyway.

POST 20Original post

People do what people do. We are all individuals. I for one, however, would not let a couple of hundred quid a year prevent me from owning the car I want.

True, but some of the people who buy at the lower end probably can't really afford to run one. There are often stories on here of people who are surprised that these cars have dropped into the £10-15k territory and are keen to buy one expecting to run them for the same cost as any other £10-15k car.

I find it baffling why people get so hung up on the cost of road tax. Its a very small part of the cost of ownership. I know people who have chosen cars due to the tax being £30. I am saving a fortune! Are you? How much was the car, the loan etc etc... Tax is an emotional cost and some put way too much emphasis on it.

I don't like it, I have 4 cars, inc show room tax of £1k for my GT4 if all were £500 my bill would be £210 a month !!! I ruled out the 2007 Cayman (owned a 05 model and I ruled out v6 Clio's and Z4M even with the price drops, people seem to want to throw money away !!! POST 29Original post

road tax - and I really can understand why people get hung up on it. my 430 is 500 pa, yet if it was 2 months older it would have been 1/2 price. my defender was a 2012 model - classed as a commercial and cost @ 200 - BUT if it had been a 2011 model road tax would have been 500. so given the option I would go pre 2006 or a newer model to get lower road tax.

POST 30Original post

anonymous said: [redacted] I had a 2.7 987 and it was galling spending £500 on tax for the lower powered car, especially as if it had been 4 weeks older it would have slipped into the K band at about £270. I had the car 4 years and spent £2000 on tax, considering I traded it for £10k that's a fair old wedge to spend with nothing to show for it.

POST 31Original post

My Cayman is a match. 2006 and gene the cheaper tax bracket. I didn't bye it because for that. I bought it because it was a good price with full history and low milage. However my misses 370z GT roadster costs 500 a year. I know which I would rather pay.

POST 32Original post

I actively looked for a lower tax band car when I bought my Cayman 4 years ago and having just taxed it for the 5th time I'm £1000 better off as a result. I made no compromise on having the car I wanted as there is no significant difference across the Gen 1 model years. For me, it was about the principle more than the money but the extra grand is welcome too!

If you worry about car tax go buy a diesel Edited by DaveGB on Thursday 28th April 04:26 I agree in the situation where the car you want is only available in one tax band but the point several of us are making is that the Gen 1 Cayman was available either side of the tax band chang point (23rd March 2006). We have two virtually identical Gen 1 Caymans separated by 5 months in age. The only reason we bought the newer one in the £490 bracket was because it was several £K below market value so it will be years before the tax penalty starts to impact the overall cost of ownership on this one.

POST 37Original post

Most of the time my Porsche sits there doing nothing. If it's £290pa to tax it costs less than a pound a day to sit there doing nothing. If it's £490pa it costs more than a pound a day to sit there doing nothing. It might not be logical in the grand scheme of things, but psychologically it makes a difference. So why don't I just go out and drive it more? Because I can't afford to. There. I said it. It wants for nothing. I don't mind spending money on upkeep, because I can see where the money went and the car benefits. But tax is a black hole and I haven't got money to be throwing into black holes. I drive it seldom enough to keep it special, and minimise wear and tear, but often enough to enjoy it around my other interests and justify having it at all. So I looked long and hard for a Cayman S or 987.1 boxster S pre March 06 (yes the last of the 987.1 3.2s fall into the £490 bracket). That limitation meant I didn't find the car I wanted. I ended up changing my priorities and buying a 996 (not because of the tax, but the tax made me look at them again and realise it was 911 now or never). Ironically it is registered in April 2001 so is more expensive to tax than if it were registered a month earlier! But it was the right car. Of course 987.2 cars are even cheaper to tax!

POST 38Original post

I can see the argument where you have 2 identical cars , same condition, same spec, same mileage etc , but one is lower tax bracket. However in reality that probably won't happen, so you're best off choosing the better car regardless of year / tax as it will be more economical in the long run. Either that or drink one less pint of beer down the pub a week and that offsets higher tax

Either that or drink one less pint of beer down the pub a week and that offsets higher tax I cannot afford a pint down the pub, it all goes on cars :-p if I do go to a pub it's maybe twice a month for only 1 pint ! so one less would mean not even going to the pub ! I sold my V8 M3 mainly because it did 17mpg, it was hard on the pocket as I do do the miles ! I have stated I am a tight git, but being a tight git has let me afford a GT4 on a very ave wage. ANd I can tell you I was not happy seeing the low Mpg the GT4 gets and the £1k showroom TAX hurt !! many people on PH seem to be very rich and just seem to want to throw money away stating buy a pint a week less etc etc The Z4M and the likes back 5 years ago when people had less money, did drop and IT WAS due to the tax, prices did recover, but people seem a bit o it's only £40 a month, I bet the same people have some £80 a month Sky pack and do not change their Electric supplier etc etc My monthly outgoings are spread sheeted to be the lowest they can be, I'll look at Mpg when buying a car, I'll def look at tax. Some posters I see get it and some well just like throwing money away or have the money too! ALL my money goes on cars just about, but that's what I like doing so they get the best care, you can keep the £80 a month SKY pack or a £50 Friday night drinking session. Having 4 cars TAX is just a drain every month. Edited by Porsche911R on Thursday 28th April 08:56

POST 40Original post

This all got me thinking, so checked, the one I'm picking up tomorrow is in the £295 band :-)

POST 41Original post

Of course road tax makes a difference. That's why the government use it to try to influence new car buyer behaviour, and why the pre 73 exemption (as it was for years until it became rolling) makes a difference to market values. But for sure different buyers consider it more or less important and as values increase it becomes less of a consideration in the round. The funny thing with the Cayman S is that the earliest are pre mar06 and so cheap. The gen2 are lower co2 and so cheap, but the ones caught in the middle are simply victims of the quirks of the system. To be honest, although it influenced my buying preferences, there are far greater things to worry about when buying a 987.1.

POST 42Original post

I spent ages looking for a pre March 23rd 2006 car for the same reason, but ended up in an immaculate very high spec 2007 Cayman S with Porsche warranty in the end.. An extra £200 in tax a year yes, but at least I have a beauty!

POST 44Original post
