Replacing the battery with non OEM will not invalidate your insurance unless any fault can be attributed to the battery.

Mine is one of the very first 997.2 so I'm assuming there could/may be some chance of it using a 997.1 part?

Using google, I can't find this being the same problem on the 997.2 the way it is on the 997.1 (and 996, which I have) - I'd phone an indie and ask their advice before doing anything!

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Had my 997.2 for just over 9 years now, it's currently under warranty for another 2 years. Battery has always been problematic - in short, the official Porsche battery is total trash. It needs charging with a 10A ctek, full recondition cycle every couple of weeks. If the engine is warm, turning off the car and restarting it shortly after (say, a petrol station visit) makes the car choke and I'm often left unsure if it will restart at all. Slightly embarrassing too. Has anyone with a Porsche Warranty taken the risk and changed for something else? What batteries do people recommend? Thanks! Paul

Paul Do 997s suffer from the same issue as 996s as regards the y-cable? If so then I'd get that checked/replaced if you are having trouble with warm starting. If faulty it will also damage the battery over time so that may need replacing as well and I'd go for Bosch.

POST 3Original post

They do - the petrol station hot start failure is classic Y cable symptoms! Might then be the battery isn't charging well, which is why it is also struggling ....

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The car has been into the dealer repeatedly for battery issues over the years, sometimes in depth for days worth of diagnostics. They've never so much as mentioned the Y cable being a potential issue. It's refreshing to hear a more genuine take on it and it seems this is well known? Is this Y cable issue something I could get fixed on warranty or should I take it to a specialist and have someone that knows what they're doing sort me out? Thank you

POST 5Original post

Hmmm .... hold that thought. Using google, I can't find this being the same problem on the 997.2 the way it is on the 997.1 (and 996, which I have) - I'd phone an indie and ask their advice before doing anything!

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I shall do that tomorrow :-) Mine is one of the very first 997.2 so I'm assuming there could/may be some chance of it using a 997.1 part? Maybe a long shot. Anyway I'll do a little checking, thank you.

POST 7Original post

But doesn't a non-Porsche badged battery invalidate the new 2 year warranty? Or have Porsche woken up to the 21st century?

POST 8Original post

And people take the piss out of TVRs with hot starting issues.

POST 9Original post

Not sure if the 997.2 is the same but I had exactly this with my wife's 997.1 4S for nearly 10 years. Blamed (and charged) the battery and kept it on a CTEK but then changed stater motor and loom and it's a different car. Spins fast hot or cold and no need to charge if I use it regularly.

POST 10Original post

My old 996 has been suffering with this for a while now. This fixes it and it's free. I like free. If I am stopping for petrol and it's toasty warm or I've been giving it the beans I just pop the boot. This turns an embarrassing petrol station moment into a triumphant display of rear engined loveliness.

This turns an embarrassing petrol station moment into a triumphant display of rear engined loveliness. It really doesn't - it masks the problem at best and could lead to major issues further down the line. In effect its a botch that works temporarily, but doesn't fix the issue long term.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

gsewell said: But doesn't a non-Porsche badged battery invalidate the new 2 year warranty? Or have Porsche woken up to the 21st century? That's actually my issue. The car is under warranty but the dealer insists nothing is wrong after repeated visits. But yet the car doesn't start when warm. So I'm not left with much but to go independent, at least for a diagnosis anyway.

POST 13Original post

Replacing the battery with non OEM will not invalidate your insurance unless any fault can be attributed to the battery. Renewal of the insurance may be another matter, if the dealer refuses unless you have an Porsche battery then borrow one and swap back after renewal.

Some enlightened dealers take this view re warranty. Others are complete pedants. Suggest having a chat with yours. Hopefully they'll be in the cooperative camp.

Could it be the power distributor pin? http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?p=1392837

CherryYogurts said: Could it be the power distributor pin? http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?p=1392837 If battery is good (and symptoms mimic a bad one) then it is the PDP, starter motor cable or starter. All well known issues in 997.1 not sure about 997.2. I learned the hard way and, after cursing Porsche batteries, eventually sorted the problem with a new starter cable. Edited to add. Battery issues normally worse on COLD starts. The others come on when hot eg classic restart after stopping for fuel.
