A seemingly small thing that's irritated me about the 986 & post '98 Porsches is the move to wheel bolts instead of studs & lugnuts which, I assume, was to cut production costs. It made wheel changes a pita & wastes time. Between winter wheel changeovers, track wheel changeovers, bleeding brakes, etc. I remove & reinstall my wheels well over a dozen times per year.
For my Cayman I plan to buy & install wheel studs & lugnuts to replace the oem bolts. This is a replacement that's routinely done with production based race cars that came w/bolts, so there's certainly no safety issue & appropriate studs are available.
I can't think of any reason not to make this change. Has anyone else thought of or done this on their street car? Am I missing anything?
Dan,
You took those words right out of my mouth. I removed the wheels today and I could not believe what a pita it was due to the fact that there are no wheel studs. I'll tell you, it's a world of difference from the air jacks and centerlocks I was accustomed to on the cup car !!!!!!!!!!!

LOL
I've got a buddy w/a 986S. He & I get together to flush our brakes each season. I've always laughed at him as he balanced his wheels on the hubs & tried to align the holes while I was already at beer time. I can't let him have the last laugh.
Ruf sells a bolt to stud conversion kit (#R96.300.361.36) for $329.99. I'd guess the parts can be had for a fraction of that. Money well spent IMO.
You might check with Boothe Design a site sponsor (as well as Ruf) and see what they can get them for as well if they can.
Now you see why I LOVE that brass wheel holder that comes from Boothe, makes changing the tire with bolts a breeze, maybe not as fast as studs, but much faster than bolts alone.
I don't see the brass wheel holder on their web page. Do you have to ask to get that brass holder?
I don't know, send Ralph an email and see what he has to say, it was just in the box of goodies he sent me and he said it was a new item so maybe it just isn't on their website yet.
